So Fish won't complain that the Free Agency thread is Rangers-centric.
Free Agency is a little over two hours away and we have a SHIT TON of needs and not a lot of space.
Hoping we trade Staal, Girardi and Glass. Nash, Stepan and maybe our RFAs could be on the move today.
We might be interested in signing Michael Grabner, Matt Martin and Brandon Pirri, among others.
So let's see.
and god help me if it's steps...
and god help me if it's steps...
I think the main impetus for trading Stepan is that he has a NTC that kicks in next year. Sather really handed out those NTC like they were candy corn on Halloween.
There is a second buyout period triggered if any player accepts arbitration, which will happen (just accepts -- they can settle and preserve the 2nd period). The period opens shortly after your last arbitration is decided/settled.
Couple NYR points...
All the armchair GM's are hating on him for not making moves, I am hating on him, but not for that reason. He made a big stink about shaking the team up, no one is safe, all that lip service. So now the fan base has completely turned on Nash, Staal, and G, they are going into next year in an uncomfortable position (just wait until one of them takes a penalty, or Nash goes 3 games without scoring-- reality in New York).
Not only that, but we trot out some team that is 95% the same with the only big difference being the Russian. I think that is a great fucking idea, basically put all the pressure on him to be the difference between a shitty team who lost in the first round and a team with a legit cup shot?
At this point, the only way we get rid of Staal or G is if Kreider or Stepan are paired with one of them. I really would love to move one of those contracts but it is not reality. I would rather keep them if it means we trade 20 or 21 for anything besides a giant return. And at this point, what is the point of clearing a bunch of cap room?
This team is too loyal and it ALWAYS FUCKS THEM, as it is now, as it will in a couple years with Hank. Staal and G contracts were insane and should have NEVER been given to them. This team because of Hank, and because they are an NY team, CANNOT REBUILD. We just can't not be competitive. Well in the NHL, that completely fucks you. Us fielding a team with no real shot of the cup is the worst case scenario. It would be better if we blew it up and started again, but with Hank that will NEVER happen.
Here is my grim, grim, grim prediction. We field a similar team next year, maybe finding a Nash trade partner, but no chance we move G or Staal unless it is a buyout. They miss the playoffs and then are faced with a ridiculous crossroads. It is at this point that Hank waves his NMC next offseason to go to a contender, we blow it up and start over. A season and a half too fucking late.
His stubbornness is going to cost him this year. My further predictions:
AV fired mid season.
Hank traded next off season.
We will shop everyone on our roster making over $4 million or over the age of 25 next off season.
Then we stink for 2-3 seasons.
Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!
Teach this corncob suckin, cack ski-pollin, herp-infested anal fissure some manners, would ya please?
But yeah gotta admit when i saw this thread for this particular year... i just assumed....
Their time for a trade might come once the dust settles with teams with space that got left out in free agency.

We should have kept Stalberg.. 1/1.5 is all he got?

Saw it coming. I hate our management team oh so much.
For 2 years, 1.6 per. One year and 100k more than Stalberg.
He's good for one missed breakaway a game.

I vote you call this line "Grabasse" (the extra e for Gerbe).
Gerbe is a guy everyone hates to play against. Sawed-off little agitator, also draws aother of calls for guys retaliating. Capable of scoring, not prodigiously but knows his way to the net. Not a bad depth pickup at all.
It's not gonna win us a championship but we could have done much worse today
