NFT: Rangers Free Agency Thread

Anakim : 7/1/2016 9:46 am
So Fish won't complain that the Free Agency thread is Rangers-centric.

Free Agency is a little over two hours away and we have a SHIT TON of needs and not a lot of space.

Hoping we trade Staal, Girardi and Glass. Nash, Stepan and maybe our RFAs could be on the move today.

We might be interested in signing Michael Grabner, Matt Martin and Brandon Pirri, among others.

So let's see.

speaks to the likely feeling of diminished speed with the loss of Hags. Grabner isnt Hags though.

Apparently we signed Grabner. Meh

For 2 years, 1.6 per. One year and 100k more than Stalberg.

Good point about the 2nd year is that it will allow us to expose him as one of our forwards in the expansion draft as one of the requirements. Allows us to protect a more important piece.

figured i would move it over...

Couple NYR points...

All the armchair GM's are hating on him for not making moves, I am hating on him, but not for that reason. He made a big stink about shaking the team up, no one is safe, all that lip service. So now the fan base has completely turned on Nash, Staal, and G, they are going into next year in an uncomfortable position (just wait until one of them takes a penalty, or Nash goes 3 games without scoring-- reality in New York).

Not only that, but we trot out some team that is 95% the same with the only big difference being the Russian. I think that is a great fucking idea, basically put all the pressure on him to be the difference between a shitty team who lost in the first round and a team with a legit cup shot?

At this point, the only way we get rid of Staal or G is if Kreider or Stepan are paired with one of them. I really would love to move one of those contracts but it is not reality. I would rather keep them if it means we trade 20 or 21 for anything besides a giant return. And at this point, what is the point of clearing a bunch of cap room?

This team is too loyal and it ALWAYS FUCKS THEM, as it is now, as it will in a couple years with Hank. Staal and G contracts were insane and should have NEVER been given to them. This team because of Hank, and because they are an NY team, CANNOT REBUILD. We just can't not be competitive. Well in the NHL, that completely fucks you. Us fielding a team with no real shot of the cup is the worst case scenario. It would be better if we blew it up and started again, but with Hank that will NEVER happen.

Here is my grim, grim, grim prediction. We field a similar team next year, maybe finding a Nash trade partner, but no chance we move G or Staal unless it is a buyout. They miss the playoffs and then are faced with a ridiculous crossroads. It is at this point that Hank waves his NMC next offseason to go to a contender, we blow it up and start over. A season and a half too fucking late.

Was reading the posts here in what I knew would be somewhat of a tough read and I got to this one and I gotta say... No offense but what the Holy sweet fucking hell are you talking about? I mean do fans like yourself literally wake up each day and just completely ignore every single detail and focus on some insane version of the here and now, without even slightly dealing in context and the story of how and why a team is constructed as it is?

Don't bother with the "Seth you're so mean and the worst poster on bbi and blah blah blah...." This shit is just wildly ridiculous and....come on man this shit is so fucking stupid it's legit insane that you said a single thing that you did.

All the armchair gms... Wow.

One by one....

- you have literally no idea whatsoever when Hank is retiring. He is still elite and has shown zero signs of cause for one iota of concern that he will not play at least well above average even if he isn't one of the top 2 or 3 in the sport every year. His contract was a no brainer in every single way and he's worth every penny and always has been. He is a Hall of Famer and all time great who has been the best player at his position during his era and is the franchise player teams search for in every sense of the word. The most important thing he lacks is a championship which has been his fault only if you don't know things that you could easily see or read about if you want.

- When you say these things.... And then include this line about no chance for the Cup....do you recall the last few seasons at all? The deals for Dg and Staal at the time they were signed were complete no Brainer obvious moves that only could be thought of as anything but the obvious good move by someone who doesn't care about anything else besides what he sees right now. The Rangers went to a Final and won a best record with a very close chance to going two years in a row. That is BECAUSE of these all time Rangers not in spite of them. I get the point that you can't grasp that idea because they didn't win. But this is all a bunch of bullshit that they signed guys out of "loyalty" and not because these were superb difference making players who shut down other teams best players. They had very bad years but just because you lie and think no one will notice doesn't mean it's true. If you need to be reminded then here you go

" No matter what you think of Staal – while he’s clearly better than Girardi, he still has flaws in his game, though his physicality is an asset (ask Crosby) – that AAV is a flippin’ steal. Brooks Orpik got $5.5 million as a UFA last season; what the hell does Marc Staal get on that scale?

With Girardi, Ryan McDonagh and Staal, the Rangers are going to have two good D-pairings in front of Henrik Lundqvist through 2018 at least (that’s when McDonagh’s up). That’s a hell of a foundation on which to build. "

Go find out more about the actual Monday Morning Qbs. Armchair GMs.... Whatever. It's insane how people just make up whatever suits their bullshit. Happy 4th.

calm the hell down dude. I'm here to post my opinion not engage in internet message board drama, so leave me out of your attacks.

Hank's deal was a no brainer, I agree. Staal's deal was not so bad at all, extending Girardi was a mistake, but whatever, we are stuck with them. My point is simply that rebuilding on the fly does not work, and I do not think we can get back to cup level without a rebuild. Which would take time. So regardless if Hank is a superhuman and has 6-7 seasons left (almost impossible but well give him the benefit of the doubt). He is not in a position to waste 2-3 years rebuilding.

And if this year does not go well, we are pretty much forced to rebuild. Jamie Benn will never hit free agency, Staal and G are going nowhere, so we arent giving another huge contract to a d man so forget Hedman, Shattenkirk, Fowler down the road, etc... We should pray our players recover after a long offseason and Staal and G can survive as 2nd/3rd pair guys. Albeit the highest paid guys playing 14-17 minutes a night.
Just seems there is no strategy this offseason
MetsAreBack : 7/9/2016 10:25 pm : link
Anyone paying attention realizes this team was closer to maple leafs last season than penguins or caps. This offseason the Devils got better and islanders got tougher with a postseason under their belt.

Nothing worse than kicking a can down the road (outside of losing our leading point scorer in yandle) which appears to be the 'plan'.

Sorely missing leadership right now. We will battle for a wild card this season. Not going to argue with Seth - 2014 and 2015 we came close ... Didn't happen.... But that's in the past. The future says unless skjei and Buch turn into messier and leetch we are wasting valuable time.
No armchair needed
Giants2012 : 7/10/2016 10:09 am : link
for my thoughts on Staal well before he received his new contract.

In this cap era...
Torrag : 7/10/2016 3:24 pm : link
...you have to pay the piper at some point. We're now doing so for giving bad contracts with NMC's to Girardi and Staal. And overpaying Hank...it has to be said as good as he is that contract makes it hard to do business up and down your roster.
Interesting read on Girardi
