“Yeah, definitely,” Manning said, via the New York Post. “We added some great players in the offseason. We were aggressive in free agency, but still have a lot of our core guys, especially on offense, back and I think we made some good moves on defense. We’re getting some guys back healthy. It’s just a matter of, hey, the talent is there, can we put it together, can we find a way to win the games and play our best football when we need to?” Manning ran through a couple of reasons why the Giants might not be able to translate that talent into success, including injuries and “how you’ll respond in critical situations in games.” Both were sore spots in the last few years of Tom Coughlin’s run on the sideline and changing things on those fronts could prove to be as crucial to the team’s hopes as any of their offseason maneuvers. |
If we make it to the playoffs, our chances of hoisting the Lombardi are as good as, if not better than, anyone else in the tourney, imo
For the most part I agree, though one could argue our biggest offseason need (a quality pass rusher) was addressed with a player who's been very good, but not someone who's lit the world on fire... and we gave him a whole lot of money. A lot of what the Giants do is going to depend on Vernon being worth his contract. I believe our tackles are going to be stout run defenders, but the ends are very uncertain, which was not what we wanted by FA's end.
Still, JPP with more recovery time and Vernon is a far better situation than what we had last year (Ayers' quality season aside). It can easily be argued that the Giants overpaid in FA, but what you can't argue is whether or not the team is improved. We are better. Much better. And unless Murphy's law hits us for the 4th straight fricking year, we should be a very tough opponent.
I'm saying 11-5.
On paper, yeah.. Eli is right. We should be. I like the roster we're going into this season with. I think Reese did well this offseason both in FA and the draft (obviously remains to be seen)
I think we have the most well-rounded team in the division right now and the most talent overall.. but we all know how quickly that can change.
I am thrilled to hear Eli taking a bit of a different approach this offseason, especially with regards to how he addresses the media. He is 35 and coming off his best statistical season and the team's talent pool is significantly upgraded. He is speaking like a leader who isn't hoping for a great season, but rather expecting it.
2016 could be quite a year.
From bring a top five team -
* Offensive Right tackle
* Dominant sideline-to-sideline COVER LB or strong safety
I don't think either is on the roster at the present time (and may not be available this year via trade or free agency)
If a rival had the secondary and d-line talent we have, we would be scared of those units.
8-)
I agree but surprising from who it is coming from
You're right.
Don't worry, I haven't completely retired.
if, under mcadoo we can simply become a normally injured team we will be tough
wait and see.

It's head coach. I don't know what we lost when we lost Coughlin, but believe we lost a lot on the preparation side. Not sure if we'll have the same kind of advantage in preparation that Coughlin brought.
Second, as bad a team as the Giants were last year, with decent coaching, the club could have won the division. They gave away several games with both inept coaching (Dallas) and just bad coaching in several other games. If we started last season winning the first couple of games, who knows how the season would have turned out. I've been a huge Coughlin fan since he coached the WRs in the 1980s but he needed to be replaced and between that, and the free agents and what looks like a good draft class and the return of some of the injured especially JPP, Eli's in not close to going out on a limb. They can get to the playoffs and do some damage.
Last, this Newhouse talk is tiring to me. He clearly is not a very good RT. But, the OL did not have a really bad year last year and with Eli's quick release and some WRs who can get open quick, the OL is not being asked to block for deep drops. The OL does have to get better rushing the ball but I don't think the team will strive for the balance that Coughlin wanted and a quick pass can have the same effect that a run can even at the goal line and in the last few minutes of the game especially if we have a TE who can catch and I think we do. Plus, Newhouse, Jerry and company have now played together for a season and with an OL, familiarity can make the sum total better than the individuals.
But on paper, since that's all we have, I'd put us at the top.
Because it's July.

great point Dan
No, like Dan and Victor, My biggest concern outside of depth-reducing injuries, is the new HC. I like him. I think. I'm optimistic. I think. But he's new, so we really are in wait, see and pray mode..
The one saving grace, is that unlike most newbie HCs, he starts his regime with a two-time SB winner/MVP and most likely a future HOFer in tow. That's a HUGE advantage when you're starting anew, imv..Eli's presence is the major reason I am not apprehensive about McAdoo..But, it still merits a concern, imo

Especially once we acquire Davis. What's the latest from Davis' camp?

I agree with the others too. There's no way to predict at this point how BM will turn out as a HC.
This team if the injuries finally normalize should be able to play with ANY NFL team. We went toe to toe last year with many of rhe top teams and this team is a big upgrade almost across the board.

Deal to be announced shortly....
upper tier competition. This is marketing self serving. crap
coming from a high paid QB. prove it, they post standings for a reason
Look at the record over the last 4 seasons, you can't hide
From the data and facts
49ers Carlos Rodgers on Victor Cruz NFC Championship game
* The team doesn't have to start over; I'm very sure Mcadoo learned a
lot from Tom Coughlin about preparing and motivating a team
* McAdoo attacked the coaching weaknesses that he saw. I think the
new key choices are Mike Solari (offensive line); Bill McGovern
(linebackers), Mike Sullivan (offensive coordinator) and Aaron
Wellman (strength)
Vet DL WR OL and I think the Sky's the Limit .
True, PP, but save for his "Yes, I consider myself elite," Eli is usually bery careful with his words. He could have said, "yes, that's what we're striving for." That would have been more Eli, imv
