Because it's not like the depth is so strong at those positions is so alluring. If I had to pick, reluctantly, I'd say running back. I think 1 of the 4 will step up and have a nice season. It's almost the most important position of the ones you listed to make some strides.
Because it's not like the depth is so strong at those positions is so alluring.
MiLB - McAdoo comes from a culture that depended on Home Grown Talent -- let's call it HGT -- You don't thonk that if rookies win positions in all four groups that suddenly they become deep
but RB the least because the real competition is really for the 4th spot between guys who aren't likely to touch the ball much, in my opinion. Jennings will still start, Vereen is still the 3rd down back, and I expect Perkins to be the 3rd back in the rotation.
I like the TE competition because they don't seem to have a true #1, but a bunch of guys that could all be #2s. They could all complement each other well. I think it will be hard to decide on the final 3 TEs, but they can use some interesting formations with their WRs and TEs and then having Vereen or Perkins in the mix.
LB could be interesting, but maybe more from the depth positions. Same goes for S.
There are four players that could make a case for starting but only 3 total spots. Donnell, Tye, Adams, LaCosse, and even Malleck has turned some heads. I don't think that they will keep four TE's because Will Johnson can line up as an HBack and can serve as an emergency fill in.

Home grown or not, none of the positions the OP listed have exciting position battles to me because, regardless of how they arrived in blue, I don't think the players have much potential. Will Tye snuck up on people and he can be a quality player, but is anyone really predicting him or Donnell to light the world on fire?
I'm more excited to see how a guy like Sterling Shepard (home grown) fits into the system. Will he be competing with Victor Cruz for playing time? A tight end? Fullback? Not sure how it'll shake out, but I know that's a very talented kid who's going to have to battle to get on the field.
At this point, Donnell beating out Tye or Williams beating out Jennings doesn't blow my hair back.
yes, it feels like we have a bunch of nice depth guys but no dependable playmakers...but...if Kennard can stay healthy...if Goodson proves as good as the draft day chatter about him hinted...if Robinson or Brinkley come to camp ready to play and a starting spot...maybe we won't be so bad?
Most of the battles offer me HOPE, not excitement. HOPE that the Free Agent and Draft Pick backfills WORK.
BUT - Running Back actually looks interesting this season. Some nice new blood, the potential of Darkwa - I feel like this group can bring back a solid, chain-moving, consistent running game, and might - MIGHT even deliver a star.
Because we have seen reports saying Donnell is our guy to him being released. The position is all over the place. LaCosse seemed to start off hot but then cooled off with Malleck showing a lot of promise as a 2 way TE. Adams is talked about as a long term solution. Tye had a very nice year last year as an undrafted rookie. You could ask 6 people how our TE position will workk out and you will probably get 6 different answers and they could all be wrong.
That's the most wide open and quite possibly the most important.
How do you figure?
I have a higher opinion of Flowers than many here. ORT is the one starting position on the OL that prevents the starters from being a quality group. Can the highly mediocre starter improve? Can the kid step up? Is the starter not even on the roster?
I would figure #1 at the beginning of the season is clearly Jennings and hope to have #1 be Perkins at the end of the season (or likely beg of next year).
Vareen is the 3rd down back, and everybody else whatever...
Between Brinkley had a decent close to the season last season, and with a better understanding of the defense plus playing behind a MUCH improved DL, he will only improve.
My hope is that Goodson overtakes them all and shows good enough to where he is in position to get snaps early in the season, if not starting. He is the youngest, and ultimately, probably the most talented of the bunch.

Mike, I would agree; in fact I'll go you one further: if Donnell winds up the starter, I'll consider it a step backwards. Tye was reliable and a bit versatile. LaCosse seems like he can block a little. It seems Adams is in over his head in adjusting to this level, for the time being. We know what Donnell is and his pass catching upside is neutralized by his inability to block and his propensity to put the ball on the ground. it's not pretty, imo.
I'm praying that Goodson comes to camp ready to play.
I think D. Thompson wins the Safety battle by mid-August and that the RB rotation will get settled by then, too.
TEs baffle me. I have no idea what the hell the Giants really have and who the hell the Giants like. This is one battle that doesn't excite me at all. It scares the bejebus out of me.

just because Cruz and SS have all but been handed starting jobs doesn't mean the position is settled. Those guys will be battling the NFL this summer. One is a rookie the other hasn't played in 2 years. To me the WR "battle" is front page worthy.
Probably not supposed to reveal real names here (not that you'd remember), but I was hired late 1995 as one of those gen'l assignment reporters, and you and I went downtown DC sometime after to watch Giants game together. Seem to recall Randolph Childress going on his crazy tear in ACC tourney around then too (I'm WFU grad). Yes, CD Pubs would have been interesting to anyone who had the "pleasure." So pleasant for one guy (BD) that he actually died at his desk there one morning. I think it still carries on (God knows how), with DK still attached.
I'm excited about that. I wonder if they'll try to move one of the big three (Jenkins, DRC, Apple) inside, or if they'll find a suitable nickel corner on the roster.
I'm guessing they won't want to put Apple there as a rookie and we'll see a heated competition between the big three for the outside spot.
With DRC's Giants future dimmest of the three at this point, they may choose to push him inside if nobody else shines in the slot.
OK and fair enough. I'll have to put on my thinking cap on this one. I'm still in touch with AL, DK and KS, if those initials mean anything to you. All are doing well, much better than BD for sure. I think CD still owns the building and now they rent it out to various small businesses. I think some newsletter chain overseas bought it out. DK is still doing on of the Funding pubs freelance.
I'm humiliated I left such a non-impression. Yes, pretty sure I know those initials. Ken popped into my head just last week for some God-only-knows reason. Glad to know they're well.
Don't be upset (lol). It's pretty much my aging brain. I can tell you details from FedEx for the past few years without fail, but have trouble coming up with my kids' birthdays and wedding anniversary. At least I have my priorities straight, of course.

The starters are probably locked up, but the other two or three spots (probably three) should be up for grabs.

I would say likelihood in order:
Darian Thompson
Nat Berne
Bennett Jackson
Mykkele Thompson
Justin Currie
Cooper Taylor
Andrew Adams
Also, I think FS is probably the only starting spot up for grabs.
Depth at other spots could be real ingesting battles too.
4th DE
Slot CB
4th and 5th WR
LB's
4th DT
TE's
Vareen is the 3rd down back, and everybody else whatever...

^This.
He didn't say whom he projected where, but sounds like Sheppard at Mike at Robinson at Wil.
I'll pick LB as the most intriguing as well as most wide open camp battle. Only a healthy Kennard has a starting role locked up.

+1
RT might be the hottest topic and most watched battle. Will anybody emerge to solidify the position?
TEs is intriguing but LBs and RBs are really good
Is Darius the guy, or does Behr/Jackson slip in there?
Can Goodson get the start? Will Robinson be back in full form?
I'm not really excited about TE because I think no matter who wins we will be about the same.
