Giants.com: Jenkins fits right into Giants secondary

Defenderdawg : 7/14/2016 1:57 pm
"I'm used to being outside, but I'm coming along at nickel," he said. "They are working me in there daily. I'm just trying to help the team." The position brings a lot more responsibility than playing outside.

"The zone drops, the blitzing, a little bit of everything because I never played the slot," Jenkins said. "But I always learn in case someone gets hurt. Next man up!"

so presumably Apple plays outside

when he plays.
They are all working inside & out
GeorgeAdams33 : 7/14/2016 2:08 pm : link
All of them
Interesting what Jackrabbit says about the slot ....

"A lot more responsibility" ....

I think he's a lot better suited for that position, he's a top-tier athlete - speed, agility, reactions and intelligence. (I'm rooting hard for Donte Deayon to also make an impact at this position).

Apple, the #1 pick, what I wish for him (and for the team) is that he become the next Richard Sherman - that can deal with big receivers of the NFL , like Brandon Marshall, Dez Bryant etc. ....

I've said since Apple was drafted that having Jenkins move inside (if he could handle it) makes the most sense. Reduces rookie burden on Apple and Jenkins is the smaller, quicker CB.
For the money
AP in Halfmoon : 7/14/2016 2:25 pm : link
he better fit right in
A lot of pressure on Apple ...

Top 10 over-all pick, he needs to deliver, BIG.

You still going with this?
This will be interesting and think fans will need to have
Jimmy Googs : 7/14/2016 2:46 pm : link
some patience which we are all really good at.

Some issues being none of these three guys (DRC, Jenkins and Apple) are suited for the slot. Further Apple is going to have some growing pains as well no matter where he lines up. And while nobody wants to see our high draft pick on the bench, Apple may find himself losing out on snaps in 2016 if a smaller CB fits into the slot better and they prefer to keep Jenkins outside.

And then it may all get tossed up again in 2017 depending on rumors with future of DRC...
surprised
area junc : 7/14/2016 3:16 pm : link
thought we paid big $$$ for Jenkins and DRC to lock down the outside with Apple being used as an athlete in the slot, a la Ross and T2 as rookies. (Who he is similar to.)

Jenkins is an Asante Samuel type and I'd think you'd want him jumping passes into the flat. thats his game. he is not a rough and tumble, blitzer tackler. he's a playmaker.

is very well suited to the slot as Ross and T2 played it....big, physical guys who can blitz, tackle, zone drop with "enough" man skills to be OK in those situations

This shouldn't surprise anyone. The transition will be smoother for Apple if he plays predominantly on the outside his rookie year and doesn't have too much on his plate. Spagnuolo will give him more to digest as time goes on but for now it makes the most sense to have Apple on the outside in nickel and dime pkgs and move Jenkins in because he's better suited for it and the learning curve will be smaller for him.
not sure how to take that :-)
Victor in CT : 7/14/2016 3:54 pm : link
I hope Spagnoulo puts Apple in a position to succeed. He certainly didn't do Landon Collins any favors by moving him to FS and changing his role week to week.
Let's wait,
Doomster : 7/14/2016 3:57 pm : link
until they actually play....
The Randall Cobbs, Julian Edelmans, Victor Cruzes of the NFL ...

Turn big CBs into twisted pretzels quickness and change-of-direction moves.
Yeah, just the big CB's
Davisian : 7/14/2016 4:20 pm : link
They suck against small CB's....

#MBM

This could cut down on Jenkins penchant for gambling
Ivan15 : 7/14/2016 4:28 pm : link
Playing in the slot, he may have to cut down on risky moves just because of the way the plays develop and the limited area within which he has to operate.

Disagree strongly based on my view of Apple. If he has to take Slot on for 2016 than so be it, but I think he will get picked on constantly.

Maybe I am wrong...i think its happened before.

You are right as Jenkins is a much better option to play inside. DRC played nickel after he was traded to the Eagles and he struggled early on and is a much better fit outside where I hope he sees the majority of his playing time. I think Trevin Wade and Deayon will play more than expected if there is an injury to any of the CB's.
On the outside, give me a couple of big dudes who ...

Won't be out-run or out-jumped (DRC & Apple) ...

At the slot, a guy who won't be juked and left behind for big scores.

That, I believe is what the Giants have in mind.
I agree with manny.

I don't recall Ross playing the slot at all as a rookie. He was essentially a starter from day 1 on the outside.
guys......it all depends on the match up
George from PA : 7/15/2016 5:06 am : link
DRC and Apple have similar traits......hopefully Apple can cover Witten while DRC has Dez.......if Julio is in the Slot.....I hope its one of these guys.....

They will have issues with the jitterbug type WR......which we hope can be covered by Jenkins or one of the smaller cbs
I like the thought of Jenkins
SanFranNowNCGiantsFan : 7/15/2016 6:54 am : link
playing the inside & Apple playing the outside.
Jenkins in the slot is smart
SGMen : 7/16/2016 4:46 pm : link
He has the skill set.

I liked the Apple pick and have a good feeling he'll be solid this year. Maybe not right away but after a few games he'll settle down.

Honestly, we have to hope our whole secondary stays healthy for once, especially starting CB's.
