In recent years, former New York Giants great and current radio analyst Carl Banks has talked often about too many Giants draft picks being "on scholarship," meaning they knew their roster spot was protected by the front office whether they performed well or not. Banks did so again last week during an appearance with Pat Traina and myself on the "Big Bue Chat" podcast. Perhaps safety Cooper Taylor, entering his fourth season, is the perfect test case for whether or not those "scholarships" still exist with the Giants. The 2013 fifth-round pick has basically done nothing since becoming a Giant. He has dressed for 16 games, made eight tackles and finished all three of his NFL seasons on IR, including the entire 2014 season. How many chances does one player get with one NFL team to turn athletic potential into something resembling NFL production? Taylor is on his fourth chance now, and he is 0-for-3. Let's take a closer look at Taylor as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp. |
As to whether he has run out of chances...the fact that he's still on the team means that he hasn't run out of chances. He can still perform well in camp and in the exhibition games to gain a roster spot.
Morning Vin!
I would venture to guess that a realistic timetable for potential starter was after 2 years, and only if injury issues did not hinder the process.
If he shows that he is not just wasting coaching time, he probably will make it to the final cut, but he now needs injury help to others to have a realistic chance.
...but maybe no more mysterious than the 5 Million threads about a non-entity who doubles as a walking medicine cabinet.
boom-CHEE!
He was only brought back, after he was cut, because of desperation....
I think the Giants realize, that he could have a good camp and preseason, and then go down in the first game....so I feel he is just a body for the 90 man squad, that won't make the final cut...

Good analogy. Let’s see what camp brings, but he’s probably starting at the bottom of the depth chart. Reese says he gives draft picks every chance to fail, but as someone said, the Giants have already cut him once. The Giants also cut Beatty, Beason, and Schwartz in the off season, indicating that they want healthier players. And they had a lot more invested in those players than Taylor. Absent a lot of injuries or a phenomenal camp and pre season, I don’t see how he makes the team.
Justin Currie is much better suited to play SS than FS. I wouldn't sleep on him or the rookie UDFA from UConn, Andrew Adams.
Not sure where you all saw this "talent" he displayed...
Now I thought coach coughlin was a good coach but he had his flaws and handling young talent, like UDFA's and low round draft choices was not his best attribute. Taylor offers a necessary option for covering TE's. At 6'4" he has the mensurables to be a huge asset which we would otherwise not possess. Thompson at 6'2" can be huge for us, but having Taylor in the big nickel can prove huge for the Defense. like when coach Spagnoulo had Deon Grant.
Taylor had surgery for a sports hernia, he should be ready for camp. I think if they five him a chance it would pay great dividends. Before anyone shoots down my train of thought remember what happen with keeping Preston Parker over Washington, his drops were directly responsible for 3 losses before he was cut.

At the Shrine Game (and practices) after which Gil Brandt said he could be another Kam Chancellor.

Ugh, no. The Giants lose absolutely nothing by holding onto him now. If him on the roster indicates desperation at the safety spot, how come he is listed at the very bottom of the depth chart? Chances are he has an uphill climb at making the roster.

Ah yes, now I recall. Brandt said that right after he fell down and hit his head on the ground...

I agree.....they lose absolutely nothing by holding onto him...he can be cut any time.....but the mere fact, that he is still on this roster, does show you the "state" of the safety position....

No, that was after an excellent week, and Brandt wasn't the only one singing his praises.
You want to question Taylor's ability, fine. Just don't be a dick about it.
Isn't that what did-in Hakeem Nicks ? That is a total shame, now I get it.
Not sure if M. Thompson is eligible for the PS, but if he is then bye Taylor.
No, he's a good football player who, unfortunately, has been injury prone.

Way too sensitive. Some light-hearted comments regarding a guy that even the coaches have often made a healthy scratch for a team that has weak Safeties, and you start to go postal. If you want to stick up for him, fine, just don't you be a jerk about it.
And its also not real close.
And its also not real close.
I like Cooper Taylor because he knows the business and has experience in the industry.
If Cooper CAN stays healthy he is a player.
In fact, I am sure Dave Merritt will bring that up to all the Safeties on the first day of summer camp...
"Guys, glad you are all here. We are going to have a tough but good and fair camp. Some of you won't be here in the end but for the ones that do make it, you will know you are the best. However, everybody keep in mind that Cooper Taylor knows the business so he has that going for him...which is nice."
As I was reading today though, I am more and more sold on the fact that safety draft pick Thompson starts and plays center field for the Giants this year. He is a ball hawk and showed well in mini-camp.
I don't like the idea of a rookie starting at FS game 1 because teams will attack and likely expose a rookie who will make mistakes but we lack talent and need our "most talented" guy to learn.
I had dreams of S Cooper Taylor finally maturing and starting FS as he has the speed and superb size but then I considered Thompson and his potential / upside. I like to dream.
Maybe B. Jackson starts the season at FS if his ACL has healed enough. But Thompson will start at some point and will clearly be active and play a lot right out of the gates.
Should be no problem...
Should be no problem...
Glad you've come to your senses.
Now, cake, pudding, or pie?

If after 3 years in the league you are still talking about the Shrine game, its safe to say he hasn't shown very much
The way I see it there is no player in front of him. He stays healthy he can help the team.
That's working for a living
Quote:
All he has to do is get over his most recent injury; get back into shape; stay healthy; start making plays, gain confidence of all the coaches; start moving up from the bottom of the depth chart; ultimately get onto the first team; make more plays; gain a starting position for Game 1 in Dallas; and then finally show that he belongs by being a productive defender.
Should be no problem...
Glad you've come to your senses.

one slice of humble pie please...

Who are you? And I don't mean specifically, more metaphysically...

I'm not dreaming about him being our starter this year any more based on some of the reply posts about him here and on another thread. I now believe B. Jackson may begin the season at FS with S Thompson working his way in. I don't like the idea of starting a rookie but maybe Thompson even starts with the idea that he'll learn on the job. Thompson has the most upside of anyone.
But would anyone be truly shocked if S Cooper Taylor finallly showed why he was picked and plays well for us? I just wouldn't be if he stays healthy.
But in truth, after reading Pat Traina's comments on Cooper Taylor and just considering his resume, we'd all be shocked if this young man truly came on this year and made a statement.
His "advantage" is that he knows the defense and got snaps in it last year. His disadvantage is his injury history and lack of production history. LOL.

Of course he hasn't...he's been out-of-action due to injuries every year. But Jimmy's question was where I saw his talent on display, and my answer was at the Shrine Game. That has zero to do with how he's played (or not played) since then. You have to start somewhere.

Pat Traina had replied in a thread post something to the effect of don't count on Taylor, and I took that as she has some insight on what coaches / players think of him and his progress. He may have made it back last year simply because he knew the system and injuries hit.
Having said all this, I am still hoping he totally surprises this camp. Can't help but to hope for best!!
We can't afford to have another year with our secondary decimated. I honestly believe if just our secondary had stayed fairly healthy last year (Behre, Jackson and Prince playing 16 games) we may have at least been 9-7 and maybe division champs over the Skins. Alas, it was not to be.
Our biggest blow last year was obviously the july 4th BOOM on JPP but losing our secondary in camp was also devastating for a team with limited depth.
