This year is likely our best chance

For a while. True or false?
In a while? True.

Best chance for what? If you mean winning it......

Well, anything can happen any year.

I love our offense's potential.
I love our special teams.
I love our Defensive line.
I love our three corners.

But we have limited depth; no FS of merit; a questionable linebacking corps; and, well, can Cruz and Shepherd truly produce behind OBJ? We just don't truly know.

All these guys

With something to prove at the same time. We need to make the playoffs this year... Obviously injuries. But our top end talent could be good and depending on our draft/fa, our depth might be ok.
False.

Eli and Beckham are the foundation, and they have several years left together. In an ideal Giants world the cast gets stronger around them every offseason. This is just the start of a three-year window to get some more hardware.

I agree on the 3 year window. I actually think we will make our run next year. We still have some holes to plug. Our best hope is this year's draft turning out to be a literal miracle, a litany of players who are above average. That would be great and would set us up for a run.
With Snacks in the middle and the most physical defense the Giants
BurlyMan : 7/18/2016 11:03 pm : link
have fielded in years, what if the Giants become a team that is really hard to run against with an offense that can stick points on you in a hurry. That is a very nice combo. Plus, it's really not the same offense with new coaches at a lot of positions. The Giants could surprise.
best chance for what?

Let's see them play a snap before we proclaim them as contenders. Jeez

My guess is next year is our best chance. That said, 2007 was a surprise and 2008 was probably our best chance. So you never know.

Exactly, you never know. Anything can happen in this league.

Injuries and development of youth can never be determined until the season progresses.

Giants win the SB in 2008 easy if Plax doesn't shoot himself and if we had a few less injuries. So even the best team can go down with one bad moment.

And look at 2011, we got healthy and hot late.
I think we have more depth than people give credit for.
chopperhatch : 7/18/2016 11:54 pm : link
Yea O line is thin outside of our starting 5. RB is quite deep. WR is much deeper than most think (assuming Cruz is even 75% of what he was). We have at least 6 D linemen to rotate, all can play. Our LB unit, while better has some redundancy: Brinkley, Sheppard as thumpers. Casillas actually can cover pretty well and he and Robinson can be nickel backers....or if Jax/M. Thompson can stay healthy, kick Collins down as a nickel backer with Casillas sticking to specials. Goodson might be our starting Mike by midseason which gives us even more depth. We have pass rush on paper. How many teams have two well above average corners (bordering on elite in terms of production) and have a 1st round pick as their third option.

I have a very good feeling about this team. I hadasimilar optimism going into 2011. But this team looks more complete. I cant help but expect to kick some ass this season barring the injuries of the last two years.
You really have no idea what you've got . . . .
TC : 7/19/2016 12:30 am : link
until you see who makes it out of camp healthy, and the bullets start flying.

Though preseason can sometimes tell you some things. Last year the Giants looked like a weak team in preseason, and they were.

My gut feeling is that this team will be better than last year's team. But last year was 6 & 10.

I'm with you in terms of optimism. My optimism hedges around the offense in general being top 5 and the DLINE and CB;s really being a stronghold which sets the tone each game.

If we get lucky and our safety play is also superb we are in good shape overall.

Our special teams are all aces.
False.....

I'd also say next year, with thus year hopefully as that stepping stone. This year would be a success with a winning record and a shot at the playoffs in the end of the season.
We are one year removed
rebel yell : 7/19/2016 7:24 am : link
from making a solid run, but this year will tell us a lot. Will last year's draft picks step up and show improvement? Will any drafts from this year make a splash? Will the team take to McAdoo's approach? It should be interesting.
I agree
giants#1 : 7/19/2016 7:43 am : link
but only because Eli's getting up there and you can't expect him to stay healthy and play at an elite level forever.

Other than that and the possible loss of JPP and/or Hankins, I think this team is ascending with a lot of good, young talent:

Beckham - HOF talent
Vernon
Jenkins
Hankins (if extended)
Pugh - hopefully takes the next step at LG this year
Richburg - already arguably top 3 OC
Flowers
Shepard
Collins
Apple

Strength and Conditioning?
wide right : 7/19/2016 8:17 am : link
One of the recurring themes throughout, not only this thread but seasons past as well, is injuries. Just simply knowing that our new strength and conditioning coach/program began with a gut renovation of the weight rooms one can only hope that injuries will at the very least be reduced.

More guys healthy = better chance for success. Let's get through camp first!

GO GIANTS!!!!!
The teams of the last few years had potential
BillT : 7/19/2016 9:36 am : link
But 20+ on IR will shut that down in a hurry. I think this team has very good talent and can easily have a winning record if not make some noise in the playoffs. Hopefully, we get to see the team they've assembled and not guys who were bagging groceries the week before they start for us.
False
UConn4523 : 7/19/2016 9:42 am : link
we can certainly make noise this year but there's no reason that can't be replicated throughout the rest of Eli's prime years (however many there are left is another discussion).

We have a top offensive weapon, a young and hopefully improving line, brand new pieces on defense locked in long term who are hopefully entering their prime, a couple solid drafts in a row (that could be more than solid in time), and a forward thinking HC. That's a recipe for staying power, IMO.

That doesn't mean I'm predicting multiple trophies or anything, but it does mean we should be in the conversation of winning the division, making the playoffs, and potentially more every season until Eli is done.
What are your assumptions regarding the continued presence
BlueLou : 7/19/2016 9:46 am : link
of the following players:

JPP
Hankins
DRC
Pugh
Nassib
We have a rookie Head Coach.

I can't give this year as our best chance.

From the middle of 2012 through last year, we led the league in man games lost due to injury and IR. We simply didn't have the depth to overcome those injuries. There is no doubt in my mind that had we had the "normal" amount of injuries we make the playoffs in 2012 for sure and likely last year as well simply because the division sucked. Washington beat some bad teams but were crushed by the good ones, that simple.

Bottom line: we have a lot of young unknowns with potential. We have a lot of hurt guys coming back. Lets see how they do this camp. If our depth steps up (Owa, Wynn, Bromley, Goodson, B. Jackson, N. Behre, etc.) we will be a much better defense than last year when we were possibly the league's worst defense.
Competitive this year, contenders next year.
Klaatu : 7/19/2016 10:30 am : link
If the Giants stay relatively healthy, I believe they can win 10 games. That won't guarantee a playoff spot, but it would still be a positive sign. Another good offseason - maybe not as active in free agency, but a good, solid draft- could move them into the upper echelon in the NFC.

I don't see why this year has to be any more of an opportunity than next. I think there's a little 2-3 year window here where we will probably have a good shot though and it's not just because of our roster but because of the state of the division right now.

I think we made moves this offseason that made this current team better but also took the future into account. We targeted ascending players rather than go too heavy into "win now" mode with a group consisting of a lot of guys who are at or near the end.

This is a fairly young football team at this point. I think the arrow is pointing up.
Yes,
Doomster : 7/19/2016 11:27 am : link
I like our chances to win the division and finally make the playoffs again....but we are not a SB team yet....

We have no depth, so we need to avoid injuries....

A lot of new faces on defense, so it will take time for them to gel as a unit......

With a QB like Eli, he gives this team a chance to win in any game......If the OL improves, if SS is the guy who will make us quickly forget Randle, if Perkins gradually becomes the starter, and the biggest if of all, if Cruz can contribute, this offense will be more consistent......
This is what I think needs to happen
David B. : 7/19/2016 11:33 am : link
Obviously Eli and OBJ need to stay healthy.

More than that, at least 2 of the top 3 WRs need to stay healthy and play all games.
The D needs to rise from last to at least somewhere in the middle of the pack.

The OL starters needs to stay healthy and improve run blocking on the right side.

The front 4 D -- particularly Vernon and JPP need to stay healthy and play all games.

Above all, they CANNOT LEAD THE LEAGUE (or be in the top 5) IN INJURIES and expect to make a run. Ever. If they can drop to the middle of the pack and avoid key injuries, they have a shot.

If they are lucky enough to have those things happen, I think they have a decent shot of making a run.

David B, without a doubt health is the key. If you can stay healthy in camp and develop continuity you have a shot. Last year, our secondary was decimated before the season ever started and it showed. However, our offense stayd fairly healthy hence we finished 6th in scoring.

Get healthy (Behre, Jackson, Cruz, etc.), stay healthy (especially starting 22), and practice well through camp so you know what you are doing for game 1. That is the key.

I recall reading something about the 2000 Ravens defense, where their 11 starters missed only like 5 games or something during the year through the playoffs. They stayed healthy, had talent and continuity and dominated.

Our starting 22 stay fairly healthy, no IR's, we are a playoff team as division winners. I say this because while Dallas has likely the top offense in the division their defense sucks. I think our defense is going to be no worse then 14-18 range as compared to 32 and worst last year.
