I'll admit, I have a hard time judging DL play unless they're extremely disruptive/elite. It seems like he did okay filling in for Hankins last year, what do you guys think?
He appeared to be progressing well toward the last half to last quarter of the season. Certainly far from giving up on him..Perhaps he comes into his own this year. Or not..Hopeful
There were many times to me that when he and Hughes were in there they were causing more problems than whoever was starting. I think he has a good year for the defense. having a good 3rd DT keeps them all fresh
IMO, I think Bromley is due to break out in a decent rotation with Snacks and Hanks. He showed some promise last year and now knows the defense better too. He needs to show a little more ferocity IMO and I'd like to see him get a few sacks this year, as he was brought in to be a penetrator and interior rusher, from what I gathered.
But my opinion on him is we should have drafted Gabe Jackson or Trai Turner whom were both drafted in the third round after Bromley. Reese would have put the nail in the coffin with that draft class if he made that pick. Until Bromley is even given the opportunity to prove me wrong, that's how my opinion on Jay Bromley. Solid 3rd DT from the limited reps I saw, nothing special.
not sure how anyone but the biggest Giants homer could be positive on him. he's shown nothing - absolutely zilch. no pass rush, easily pushed aside on run plays. unable to beat out Markus Kuhn for a starting spot. part of the reason we had the worst DLine in the NFL last year.
This is his make-or-break year though to show some real ability to get after the QB from the DT spot. I think anybody saying they have a conclusive opinion on him is jumping the gun, so to speak. I believe he needed those first 2 years to develop, and this is the year we see the true Bromley.
I do not think that we sign Hankins to a huge deal with us signing Snacks this offseason. I think that if JPP comes back to form he will be our first priority with Hankins testing the market.

I think JPP will make more than Hankins, if both were to have career years.
Why do you draft a guy who's been a 3-tech in college - and a pretty good one - and have him put on weight so you can plug him in at the 1-tech? Never made any sense to me. Now, reportedly, the Giants have had him lose the weight they previously had him put on. Go figure.
He hasn't done or played enough for any opinion on him to hold much weight. Lots of DT have had first two years like his and emerged as good players and lots have disappeared . However, this year is certainly a make or break one for him. He's in line to be the #1 rotational DT probably both for the 1 and 3-tech positions. We'll see and that's about all we can say.

Well, that settles it. Bromley makes All-Pro this year.
but not enough to justify 3rd round status. I am curious to see what the new DL can do with him. Reportedly, DL coach is a master teacher, who coached for BB. And, Zgonina developed a rep for holding players accountable.
Bromley has physical ability and by all reports is a hard worker. Might be a case of working smarter, not harder.
the dismay that rang out over his Round 3 selection continues to be validated; maybe he'll turn the corner. I would not be a fan of keeping him at the expense of keeping Hank

Didn't you hear? They're going to trade him for an O-Lineman from San Francisco. Gonna happen any day now.
His numbers improved fom year one but it's hard to impress on the defense this team had last year. He has also yet to record a sack something he was projected to be good at. This is a big chance for him this year to show what he has learned in two years. He should be the third tackle in the rotation he needs to show us something more than he has to this point. To this day the idea to put him behind Hankins on the depth chart has completely confused me they are just two different players.
I am hopeful that Bromley pans out and starts showing something this
Defensive lineman often have to "learn" technique and the defense and that takes time. They also have to work out and gain strength and quickness out of college. How many rookie DL's excel (very few) and that is for a reason.
I don't think Bromley is a bust but I also haven't seen anything from him to make me believe he can be a starter either. I believe you just have to hope that this year, in camp, we hear good things and he clearly becomes the guy who comes in behind Snacks on 3rd downs. A guy who gets to rotat in some to give breathers.
Right now I'm optimistic with him simply because it is "pre-camp" time and I am a Giants fan. We really need Bromley, Owa and Wynn to develop and be stud rotation guys for us. It is a long season and if we are going anywhere this year it will be because our DL is strong and fresh.
My wildcard DT pass srush specialist is still FB Nikita simply because he rushed the passer well in college; flashed some as a pass rush DL last year; and now he has bulked up to 250 pounds so he could potentially handle the run at him.
If Bromley and the others develop into potential starting caliber types who don't start because the guys ahead of them are simply better well then we are on our way on defense. Games are often won in the last 7 minutes or less. A strong DL, a fresh DL, can help us win those last 7 minutes and therefore the game.

why draft a DE over the LB you need because of BPA and then play the DE at LB?

If you're talking about Kiwi, I agree. I was hoping they'd draft the late Thomas Howard, out of UTEP.
that makes it a bit more confounding because that happened under EA's watch; even if JR was director of scouting, that makes two GMs trying to make personnel suit their scheme preferences rather than v.v. I thought he may have been talking Damontre, of whom there was some talk about moving him to LB
Interesting site and stats sheet. I'm not sure that you can make a pure judgment of his ability based on this though. The coaches and team are the only ones that likely truly know how effective he was...or wasn't. All you can hope for right now with him as that in year #3 he blossoms.
Probably needs better coaching, too. I note with interest that when Linval Joseph went to Minnesota, the coaches there made some minor adjustments in his technique that helped him become a much better player.
Agree that this is Bromley's make or break season.
RE: RE: To be fair, he did get an honest number of snaps and didn't do much

Absolutely true. You can only definitively say based on snap counts that his "counting stats" like tackles and sacks simply were not good. 19 tackles and 0 sacks over 470 snaps and 16 games probably isn't what they were expecting for a 3rd round pick.
This doesn't replace watching game film and seeing how many pressures and good plays he had, but it's one piece of the puzzle. At some point though, you do need some numbers.
I was just looking at the roster and recall a "projected roster" article with DT Louis Nix listed as our #4 DT.
I'm not sure what DT Nix's upside is at this point. No idea really. He was on the team last year so at least he had an opportunity to learn the defense a bit.
But I couldn't help but think I wish we had a veteran DT, a guy who has started some and could be serviceable if he was forced to start due to injury. I don't believe Nix has much of any real experience. At least DT Bromley has played some snaps and knows the defense.
Ummm, they are OFFENSIVE linemen. Not sure "tackles" is any way to judge them.
Re Bromley I don't see how anyone can grade him yet. INC from me.
I think JPP will make more than Hankins, if both were to have career years.
I think John will be more affordable to re-sign.

+1

Vey underrated player, I also wanted him over Kiwi in that draft
