NFT: Knicks: Melo says they might have gotten Wade if....

yatqb : 7/20/2016 10:07 pm
the Miami thing had blown up earlier? Seems like an awful signing if it meant not signing Lee and Jennings and renouncing Thomas. Seems like the only way we'd have been able to afford Wade, and even that would have required Wade to take a discount.

What say you?
I prefer what we
Del Shofner : 7/20/2016 10:08 pm : link
actually did.
Yeah I could certainly see that.
bceagle05 : 7/20/2016 10:13 pm : link
I'm glad it worked out the way it did though. KP would've never touched the ball on a team with Melo, Rose and Wade. Thomas and Lee are rock solid role players on good deals. One more splash next summer and it's gonna get fun.
Not sure if I preferred what we did.
Carl in CT : 7/21/2016 2:45 am : link
If we do have a max free next year chances are it will be used on one of the guard spots, which means Lee will be the odd man out anyway. Jennings is on a one year deal and probably won't be back. Thomas well he is Thomas a role player. If we signed Wade (I know with Rose in the backcourt we would really struggle from three), but if we got Wade on a two year deal (not three like he got I would agree to stay with what we got), I might look at it differently.
To begin with, I'd rather have Courtney Lee next to Rose
Ira : 7/21/2016 7:29 am : link
in the backcourt for two reasons. As they say, there is only one ball. Also, Lee is younger and is playing good d. Then we get much needed depth in Thomas and Jennings.
I too prefer

I don't think the knicks goal is to get a max slot next year, I think if all goes well they keep this starting 5 for the next 4-5 years and just keep adding to the bench...

I could see Jennings back unless he really has a great year and someone offers him a starting role and big money but I think his best role is 6th man on a good team..

arcarsenal : 7/21/2016 9:15 am : link
Would have been cool to land Wade but we already have 3 offensive players who are going to dominate the ball at times. Lee was a better fit as a strong defensive 2 and I think the lineup is better balanced this way.
I could even see a scenario where if Rose has injury problems
Heisenberg : 7/21/2016 9:17 am : link
and Jennings plays well ( and we don't get CP3 or Russ) that he gets a chance to stick here.

More likely though he plays well and gets a chance to have a bigger role somewhere next year, a la Jeremy Lin.
a Rose/Wade
Enzo : 7/21/2016 9:44 am : link
back court would have been...something.
Wade gives you a chance of winning it all
Vanzetti : 7/21/2016 10:16 am : link
Granted, he would have to stay healthy and it would all have to fit. But Wade is a HOFer. Lee is Chris Childs or Shump. Good defender. No offensive skills. You take a chance on the HOFer.

Lee is a meh player who had the good fortune to be a free agent in a year with a massive cap space increase. Don't get me wrong, he is a nice addition on defense. But anyone expecting him to be a game changer is going to be disappointed.

Thomas is a dime a dozen.

Jennings would be uneccesary with Wade.

So I don't really see how These three are not close to Wade. So unless Wade was demanding a 5 year deal, it's a no brainier to me
Comparing courtney lee to shumpert is a bad look.
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/21/2016 10:22 am : link
One is a career 38% 3-point shooter and the other one barely breaks 30%. Lee attacks the basket, can finish around the basket, and actually gets free throws. The next time Shumpert attempts 100 free throws in a season will be the first time since his rookie year. He struggles to get half that many in good years. To say Lee doesn't have any offensive skills is flat out wrong.

i watched some you tube video
gm7b5 : 7/21/2016 11:04 am : link
of holiday, the throw in with the rose deal. He looks like he can play a bit too. Smooth shot, and goes to the rim. He might surprise a bit.

First off knicks do not need lee to be a game changer, he is what he is a good defender and a floor spacer on offense..

don't compare him to Shumpert, Shumpert does not deserve that respect, Lee is a better shooter and defender..

secondly how does signing wade mean you don't need Jennings? Jennings is going to be the 6th man energy scorer off the bench, Wade would have been the starter at the 2...

also knicks have their 3 scorers they needed defense and shooters to surround them which they got..

Lance thomas for as much as I hated him last year is needed on this team this year because he is the all purpose guy off the bench they needed, hopefully they don't need him for more...

Wade is a hall of fame but he is not a good fit for this team and I'd rather have the better pieces to build a better team then 1 player, especially when you already have 3 scorers in place

Hes a fifth-year guy, a graduate student, Army officer, Krzyzewski said. Hes healthy for the first time, hes 23, and he just does all the things he can do really well sets screens, rebounds, talks on defense. And somebody recognizes that. The Knicks recognize that: We want a guy who does that. And now hes got to make the most of the opportunity.

Adding intrigue to Plumlees story is he joined the Army Reserve last year and plans a career in the military after he hangs up his basketball shoes.

The Knicks didnt have a pick in either round of the NBA Draft and were willing to pay for a second-round pick until the cost got too extreme (over $2 million). Knicks president Phil Jackson anticipated two seniors they liked would fall out of the draft Plumlee and shooting guard Ron Baker of Wichita State.

We were hoping he wouldnt be drafted, because he had a chance to go where he wanted, Krzyzewski said. He had great workouts. We knew somebody was going to have an interest. We knew hed go to a training camp. Its a dream to be able to go to the Knicks for him.

From Sam Amico:
Anakim : 7/21/2016 1:23 pm : link
The Knicks are among the teams with an interest in available Bucks center Greg Monroe, league sources have told Amico Hoops. The Knicks would likely need a third team to help facilitate a trade for Monroe, sources said.
How could they fit Monroe under the cap?
yatqb : 7/21/2016 1:34 pm : link
KOQ's money isn't enough to accommodate that cap hit, and there's no one else they can part with that would make up the difference.
never heard of Sam Amico
Enzo : 7/21/2016 2:06 pm : link
but I don't think there's a way to trade for Monroe unless they're sending out melo and take back Monroe and other salaries. Basically nobody on the Knicks can be traded right now except for Melo, KP, and O'Quinn.

Yeah, I don't see it.
I
DanMetroMan : 7/21/2016 2:27 pm : link
like Monroe more than most of BBI but he's basically on a 1 year deal so even dealing Hernangomez for him isn't all that appealing.
Essentially
DanMetroMan : 7/21/2016 2:30 pm : link
you'd be dealing X for 1 year of Monroe and the right to give him a new deal worth 80-100 million.
It's worth taking a flier on Monroe, but who can we trade?
Heisenberg : 7/21/2016 2:53 pm : link
I don't think any of the guys we just signed can be traded. So... Melo? Rose? We're at the cap. I just don't see how it's even possible, regardless of how you feel about Monroe?

it literally can't happen due to cap/trade rules. The guy might be a legit writer, but if he's reporting this he's extremely misinformed.

Wade would have been a one for three trade.
manh george : 7/21/2016 3:52 pm : link
No Lee, no Jennings, no Thomas. Given the injury risks we already have, going that thin on the second team would have been a little nuts. Who would be the backup pg? The back-up 3?
If Rose were to miss some games, who steps in, and who backs up at pg?

Just too thin. And on a team with perimeter defensive problems to begin with, doing without Thomas would have hurt.

No, meaning he said "The Spurs are interested provided they find a third team to make it work"

according to the trade machine, the Spurs could in fact make it work on their own, whereas the Knicks could involve 5 other teas and still don't have the contracts to executive a trade for Monroe. This guy is even more lost than I thought.

It isn't a great message to send to new teammates that you'd prefer to have Wade over them.
