We have all sorts of "keys to the season" but I think staying healthy is the #1 key. We have lost more man games to injury and IR'd more players overall than anyone since mid 2012.
If we had stayed healthier in those seasons, been "average" even in terms of injuries, we likely make the playoffs a few times, definitely in 2012 where we could have competed.
We sucked in 2015 because we lost JPP to 4th of July; Hankins didn't step it up and got hurt; and the secondary was decimated with injuries before the season started and in season with Prince.
If we "surprise" and the starting 22 stay fairly healthy we will win the division and more. It really is that simple.
The base group certainly can't get hurt: Eli, OBJ, Flowers, Pugh (probowl type guy), Richburg, DE Vernon, JPP, Hankins, Snacks, Cromartie, Jenkins. Not sure who else qualifies as pretty much KEY, meaning losing them the dropoff is incredible. Maybe FB Johnson who will bring an awful lot to this team. Or RB Vereen who will be a 3rd down conversion machine for us.
Very interesting. All four of our starting DL's are well above average run defenders. In matter of fact, Snacks is possibly the league's best run stuffing interior guy. Hankins is going to bounce back and be top notch with Snacks next to him. Vernon is super solid on the edge as is JPP (assuming 3 fingers work well enough to grip).
I think L. Collins playing near the LOS at safety also helps the run defense. I would not be surprised if LB Robinson ends up playing WLB over JT Thomas and is an upgrade. LB Kennard, if healthy, is a stud run stuffer and good pass rusher.
The potential for this team to have a top run stuffing unit is there. We just need to stay healthy AND we also need the youth to develop and bring it as well.
I was going to say Thompson becomes the leader/glue of our defense.
I think D. Thompson has the most upside of any safety we have so if he did step up and become a solid starting FS for us we'd be vastly improved from year's past.
Our "biggest hole on defense" right now appears to be FS, a mid-fielder who excels in coverage and gets us interceptions. A guy who leads. Personally, I'm hoping the young safeties all fight so hard and are above average. We'll be suiting up four safeties on game day for sure, and we'll play a lot of dime packages in this pass happy league, so the more talent we have the better.
A nice surprise would be to average more than one rushing TD per game. Last year they had just five all year, which is just brutal.
With FB Johnson blocking; with improved TE play and blocking; with an improved left side of the OL and especially entire OL continuity; well, I have to believe we'll have at least a TD a game on the ground. I'm hoping for no less than 20 TD's at RB, to be honest, as that would mean our redzone offense really, really stepped up.
The big problem we have at RB is that we have a "solid" bunch but no true burners. I think our run game will be about time of possession, about mixing it up. One guy who could be a force if he learns and is used correctly is RB A. Williams. Can he bust out with FB Johnson and improved blocking in front of him?
Can rookie RB Perkins be slowly worked into the lineup and be a force by the last quarter of the season? We shall see but I think our run game will be vastly improved.
And has 10 sacks and many QB hits. He is the surprise of camp and the NFL as he is only 5' 10" tall. Spags creates situational matchup advantages with him and he totally surprises with his quickness, motor and skills.
The Giants are therefore top 5 in the league in sacks and the defense is top 10 rather than 32nd.
If Eli missed a single game, so be it, as nothing is forever, but God forbid he was hurt for an extended period of time. As a fan, I shudder to think it.
Eli is the face of this team, its heart and soul. He is ICE personified, taking everything in stride. I think the team FEEDS off that personna.
I do want to see QB Nassib play some. I really do just so we know what we have in a backup and also because, well, if he flourished maybe he becomes tradeable for value.
Look at Dallas without Romo. They won't win, at least not consistently. The Giants without Eli may likely be the same: terrible. Nassib is just an unknown.
#1 Will Tye makes the pro bowl
#2 Odighizuwa contributes 8+ sacks.
Tye in the pro bowl? Bahahaha
Tye may not probowl, but dang this kid looked good in spots last year. Tye's blocking also improved by leaps and bounds as I understand it. I really think he becomes a "blanket" for Eli much like Witten was for Romo. He is sneaky quick, nifty, and now knows the offense cold with another off-season. If his blocking has really improved we are in good shape going forward.
As for OWA, you have to hope he stays healthy but I'm not sure (barring injury) he gets enough snaps for 8+ sacks. My surprise sacker is still FB DL Nikita Whitlock. I see him coming out and surprising in camp as a situational pass rusher used in various spots for mis-match. You have to hope we have a surprse pass rusher.
OWA could be the 3rd and long DT as well. That would be interesting.
Actually, oddly, this one would not surprise me. I just see E. Flowers really improving. He is healthy and now has coach Solari plus 15 games of LT experience. He is a powerful man and I see him keying a left side run game that will be "special" and so forth.
OG J. Pugh is in his second season at his natural RG position. He played very well last year and should play at an even better level this year. He and E. Flowers will be dominant run blockers and above average pass protectors.
OC Richburg is one of the 3 best centers in the league already. Even if he improves just a a shade, he is already a probowl caliber player.
LG J. Jerry went to Bentley's AZ OL man 'development' program or something like that. That to me means he wants it, he wants to be better and worked his ass off to improve. Clearly, he wants one last nice contract as he is 30 and a UFA at season's end. He is a massive guy so the fact that he is not very good run blocking is well surprising. Look for him to at least be better this year.
RT Newhouse is who he is. If he plays like he did last year, maybe with less mental errors due to experience in offense and continuity, well he is better than.
Unlike most, I believe this starting group is a stronger one than most in the NFL. But it must stay healthy because our depth sucks.
My hope is B. Hart develops and challenges for RT and RG, and especially that we know we have a starter here if not for this year than certainly for next.
T Stingly is the swing tackle who sticks. Hopefully he won't have to play in anything more than mop up duty. OC B Jones, well, I had high hopes he'd at least be a top notch backup but he didn't look good last year. He has bulked up and now has some experience. I look forward to his playing better and hopefully winning the backup OC job on merit. He did dominate in Canada and maybe just needed to learn NFL style play? We shall see.
We really don't have much in the way of developing youth so what we have we have.
Andre Williams: 250 carries, 1,100 yards, eight TDs.
I am still holding out hope A. Williams, a bruising back with more speed than Jennings I believe, does work out this year.
I think the coaches now understand how to best utilize him with a FB. With improved FB / TE / OL blocking and his experience, maybe A. Williams does bust out.
I'd guess, due to rotation, 150-725 - superb stats for a bruiser type back. Just wish he was a better pass catcher so teams would be on their heals more.

Too early for any reasonable prediction as to the "burner" capacity in our RB group. I would like 5to see Darkwa get a legitimate # of carries, he appeared to be a top quality option.
He combines with Beckham to have more catches, yards, and TDs than any duo in league.
And....Eli throws for 43 TDs. Maybe 45 but I want to low ball the projection at 43 TDs.
More probable to have the "1 starting WR tandem in the NFL. With Beckham on the same roster, you will see less balls going to Beckham and it doesn't appear enough balls left to allow Shepard those kind of #'s.
Nassib is a Free Agent at the end of this year and I am certain he will land a starting contract on another NFL team. Before anyone gets belligerent or obnoxious, Nassib was a steal and has had the good fortune as well as misfortune of playing behind Eli.

Ah, you are right. Nassib is in fact an UFA after this year. I had him signed for 2017 but that of course was in my mind. LOL.
I have to believe we'll be looking in the draft for a QB as Eli will be 36 and well you never know. It is more likely we sign a veteran free agent, someone who fits the WCO and can manage a game well enough.
And since this is the case, I only want to see Nassib in mop up duty at most this year! The only good that could come out of his playing some "real action" should Eli take some hits is when he leaves via UFA we get a 3rd round compensatory pick for him should a team in need of a QB decide to take a shot on him and pay him big. But I'm getting ahead of myself aren't I?
Tye's last few games in 2015 ere superb. I saw a nifty route runner with good hands. His blocking also improved and now he is in year #2.
I would not be shocked if he became Eli's blanket, a guy who just gets open a lot because we have so many other options to cover and worry about with OBJ, Cruz, Sheppard, Vereen and even Johnson.
Tye isn't a blazer but he does get open and we really need him as a redzone threat should Donnell not stay healthy. In matter of fact, a two TE set of him and Donnell could prove to be tough as well. I look forward to camp and the progress of the TE position.
He gets re-signed by the Giants to the richest contract ever given to an Offensive Guard.
And in another surprise move, Eric decides to bring back the BBI trophy just so he can award it to Jerry, personally.
LOL. I hope his work in the AZ offensive line "training technique camp" that I believe OL Bentley ran helps him immensely. Jerry is 30 and can get one more big contract from someone. He just has to run block MUCH better for that to happen. His pass protection is fairly solid and so forth. I really hope he does surprise and really show well in all areas of his game this year.

Especially given the fact that with Cruz and Shepherd in the mix, our other weapons will draw more attention this year which will really open it up for Tye.

Nassib won't get a big contract from anyone if he never starts a game for us. Also, when I wrote this, I thought he was signed through 2017 but it is only 2016 so tradeable isn't a word I'd use again.
You just hope that if Eli takes a hit in game and we are up 14 or something, Mr. Nassib can step in and do very well, get some experience. A team could potentially over-pay for him as a UFA if they think he can compete for a starting job. But he likely signs a 1 year deal where he thinks he has a shot to start. If he stays here I'd be stunned.
Eli winning his 3rd SB MVP is no surprise of course
3-0 vs Brady & Belicik would be very nice indeed!
And I do believe we'll be in the playoffs as NFC East champs. Dallas has 3 suspended defensive STARTERS to start the season; Romo is the walking wounded; and, they always get over-hyped talent wise. The Cowboys will score and control time of possession though and that usually means wins...just not enough wins to beat us out for the division.
The Skins will be 9-7 and Eagles 6-10 or something like that.

Nassib's upcoming FA status has been discussed on Giants.com on BBKL a few times. One of the talking points is "will Nassib get a starting QB contract offer" (given his lack of PT) and neither Schmelk nor Dittino nor Anita Marks could think of a parallel in NFL history.
It's an interesting sub plot to the season IMV. Has any team given a starting QB contract to a career backup who hasn't played a regular season game? Short of situations when an assistant coach or OC changed teams and brought a career backup QB with him (extremely unlikely from the Giant's staff) it's unprecedented.
The consensus here on BBI is that Nassib will leave. But really we have no idea if he will get a "starting QB" type offer.
Looking at Eli's age I'd like it for the Giants to keep him, but have no clue what $ that will take.

IMHO, Nassib gets a "backup QB" type money contract, not much, a 1 year deal at that for a team that he thinks he can compete for a starting job. That would be the smart move for him. But if no one makes him an offer he'd be a fool not to re-sign with us for a year. We shall see.

I would not be shocked if he became Eli's blanket, a guy who just gets open a lot because we have so many other options to cover and worry about with OBJ, Cruz, Sheppard, Vereen and even Johnson.
Tye isn't a blazer but he does get open and we really need him as a redzone threat should Donnell not stay healthy. In matter of fact, a two TE set of him and Donnell could prove to be tough as well. I look forward to camp and the progress of the TE position.
And in another surprise move, Eric decides to bring back the BBI trophy just so he can award it to Jerry, personally.

..Dead serious
Tye's last few games in 2015 ere superb. I saw a nifty route runner with good hands. His blocking also improved and now he is in year #2.

Especially given the fact that with Cruz and Shepherd in the mix, our other weapons will draw more attention this year which will really open it up for Tye.

I liked the Nassib pick and understand why we did it. But I don't see how he gets a starting contract without ever starting
