AAA Gsellman
AA TBD

AAA-
Herrera 1-3, BB
Nimmo 1-4, K
Cecchini 2-4, 2 errors* (note, he was only charged with 1, with the second being charged to Dilson Herrera, I dare you to watch this video and say this isn't Cecchini's error, Herrera is pointing to the ball, Cecchini puts down his head and the ball falls in. https://twitter.com/Astromets31/status/755931117446803457)
Plawecki 1-4
Rivera 1-4, 2 k's
Gilmartin 6 innings 6 hits 4 runs 1 earned 2 walks 3 k's

AA
Stuart 2-5, 2b, 3 k's
Rosario 1-4, 2b
Smith 1-4, HR (From astrosmets

Last 97 PA from Dominic Smith: .395/.454/.756 with 5 2B, 1 3B, 8 HR, 24 RBI, 10 K: 9 BB, .377 BABIP) BABIP is inflated of course but he's simply crushing it right now. Let's hope he keeps it going (and takes his fitness a bit more seriously this off-season) great to see
Evans 2-4, 2 2b
Montero 5.1 innings 5 hits 3 runs 6 walks 4 k's (in a word... YUCK)
Peterson 1 inning 2 hits 1 run 0 walks 0 k's
Roseboom 1 perfect 2 k's
Taylor 1.2 innings 2 hits 0 runs 1 walk 1 k (6.61 era last 10 appearances, though in fairness, inflated by one awful appearance)

A+
Siena 0-4, 3 k's
Thompson 2-4
Kaczmarski 0-4, K
Urena 0-3, K
Conlon 5 innings 6 hits 1 run 1 walk 7 k's (we will see how he does when he hits AA given his mid-high 80's FB but truly a wonderful season)

Columbia
Dash 1-4, 2 k's
Garcia 1-4, 2b (has not been good since returning from PED suspension)
Shaw 5 innings 8 hits 4 runs 3 walks 4 k's (Gives up hits like it's going out of style)

Kingsport (Szapucki promoted to BK)
Strom 0-2, 3 BB, K, SB
Rasquin 2-4, 2b (Hitting .487 over his last 10 games which includes 3 3 hit games, 2 2 hit games and a 4-4)
Viall 4.1 innings 3 hits 1 run 1 walk 8 k's
JCM 2.2 innings 1 hit 0 runs 0 walks 4 k's

Beracierta 0-4, BB, 2 K

Haggard 1 inning 2 hits 0 runs 0 walks 3 k's)

DSL2
Reyes 4-5, 2 3b
Pujols 1-5, 2 k's

I was curious as to why the Mets AAA team is all the way out in Las Vegas? Would love to see some of their prospects in person since I go to Durham Bulls games in the International League.

Long story short, the owners turned off a few other markets and basically were forced to head out to LV (regarded as the worst AAA ballpark in baseball. Sewage issues etc). Sadly, they don't have an obvious out for a while. Gotta pray someone like Syracuse or Rochester ends chooses new teams. Might be 2-3 more years before the Mets can leave.

Both should open in AAA next year barring something unforeseen. I'm just happy Smith is showing power now and not next year when it's a daily debate of "PCL! LV!"

Thanks for the explanation!
the error
Csonka : 7/21/2016 10:12 am : link
Sorry, but that error has to go to Herrera. I agree Cheech needs to get out of the way much better, but Dilson called him off and then didn't make the play. In the way or not, there was no contact. Dilson has to catch that.
With Cecchini
Metnut : 7/21/2016 10:15 am : link
it's just going to take more time. I think players generally get better at defense with more repetitions (until age decreases range) and Cecc is just going to need more work there.

It looks like the bat might be able to help soon or even today, but if he can't field the position, there's not much he can do for us. Hopefully they keep giving him every day work there and we'll see reports of improvement at some point this year, or even next year.

He wasn't calling him off at all. Watch it again, he's pointing at Cecchini because Cecchini can't see it. Notice Herrera doesn't move toward the ball until it's clear Cecchini won't. That's 100% the SS's ball in every way.
I'd consider moving Cheech
pjcas18 : 7/21/2016 10:18 am : link
to CF or somewhere else.

Rosario blocks him at SS even though today Rosario is behind him in minors level.
The
DanMetroMan : 7/21/2016 10:19 am : link
ball lands 7-8 feet on the left side of 2b, when is that a 2b ball?
I
DanMetroMan : 7/21/2016 10:24 am : link
just watched it 3 more times and don't see how it's even really all that debatable.

-Ball goes up, Herrera points to Cecchini who jogs to around the area where the ball ends up landing and directly in front of Herrera (so clearly not getting out of the way)

-Herrera then notices that Cecchini isn't going after the ball so he rushes in (Cecchini in his way some reason looking at Herrera and not the ball) and finally at the last moment runs a few steps backwards (still in Herrera's way) and causes the ball to fall in a good 7 feet from the back to Cecchini's side. At the very least since when do you just put your head down? Why get in his way if he you think it's going to be his ball?
I love Cecchini but I don't think he can play SS
Vanzetti : 7/21/2016 10:25 am : link
This is two years now and he has gotten worse this year. First month looked like he had improved but he is now simply a disaster.

We are talking Sax /Knoblauch territory. This is not a kid struggling to learn the position. It's a mental thing. He was not like this his first two years. Hope he overcomes it because he is such a smart guy. Very likable when you hear him interviewed. But I'm not optimistic
Sorry, Dan
Csonka : 7/21/2016 10:26 am : link
Love your work, but you're wrong on this one. Dilson is totally calling for it. He's trying to catch it all the way. The fact that the ball drifts towards SS doesn't change that fact. It's his ball.
It's
DanMetroMan : 7/21/2016 10:27 am : link
too bad too because he's really hit well (been impressive) but how can you trust a guy with 28 errors in 65 starts? Last 175 games 56 errors at SS

And that's why Cecchini puts his head down and drifts toward Herrera? That's what your supposed to do? Get in his way? Not keep your head up in case it drifts a) for you to catch it b) to not be in the way? You never see a ball go up, pitcher calls for it, then suddenly someone else has to rush in? Since when does everyone else stop what they are doing/get in the way/put their head down?

Gavin Cecchini just matched his 2015 error total of 28 and it took him 43 fewer games/~400 fewer innings this year
Yeah
pjcas18 : 7/21/2016 10:30 am : link
i can't see it clearly, but it looks like Herrera is calling off Cheech meaning it's Herrera's ball and it drifts more than he expected.

hard to know without hearing what Herrera says, I assume from the video he's saying "mine" or "I got it"
Okay
DanMetroMan : 7/21/2016 10:33 am : link
so only one error for Cecchini and a bone headed/lazy move of not getting out of the way and putting his head down. Either way he's been a disaster at SS.

Cheech isn't getting it done at SS. His defense has been inconceivably bad. Not sure what to do there. Either just give him more time or move him to 2B when Dilson gets called up.
I
DanMetroMan : 7/21/2016 10:44 am : link
have to assume Walker is a goner and they will let Herrera + Cecchini + Reyes battle it out for 2b in ST with Reyes being the favorite (obviously if he's awful down the stretch) that could change things. I think Walker is gone and likely doesn't even get the QO at this point (hot finish may change that). Can't have a guy like DeGrom throwing a gem and then having a key ball booted/thrown away. I'm all about getting a bat in there but Cecchini is a good hitter, he's not a stud. Has to field the ball better or he's not going to help much.
No one else sees the Mo Vaughn
pjcas18 : 7/21/2016 10:44 am : link
similarity with Smith?

they don't look alike but the swing and the body type seem very similar to mo-town to me

Mo was the only Red Sox player I ever liked and was ecstatic when the Mets acquired him (only to have those hopes shattered rather quickly), so maybe I want to see it, but they seem a lot alike to me.

the way Smith leans over the plate at the last second, google some Mo Vaughn youtubes.

I think anyone with a brain would sign for that. Not that I disagree with the visual you see at all but sidenote age 23 season Mo Vaughn displayed a ridiculously advanced eye at the plate (69 games 14 homers...60/44 BB/K, that's just nuts for a power hitter). I wonder if Vaughn would have been a Met had he lasted 1 more pick. A NY guy who went to school locally.

21 if you compare their seasons they're somewhat similar.

not suggesting Smith will become major league Mo Vaughn (that was kind of in the steroid era so no clue what Mo was into and character wise the Red Sox hated him - fans loved him, but the Sox FO hated him, but I see similarities.

No real point in promoting Rosario. #1 He's not going to be playing for the 2016 Mets #2 While he's been very, very good... he has a .457 BABIP and we are talking about 94 PA's. See what he's doing 40-50 games from now.

Really curious how high Smith skyrockets
ZGiants98 : 7/21/2016 11:36 am : link
in terms of rankings heading into next year. At the time of the mid-season rankings he was really only just starting his power surge and I think people were down on him. Legit 20+ HR in Bing as a 21(just turned 21) year old is a game changer.

So theyre going to have to find a way to just, as we say, loosen up the sphincter factor so that their ability can come through.

The sphincter factor according to Gamboa is when a player tightens his sphincter so much because of the pressure to succeed that the game moves too fast. Its the core of both Berrios and Tiberis problems, but they each have other obstacles in front of them as well, according to the skipper.

Baseball America released their top ten Mets mid-season prospect list and it does present some surprises. Though it doesnt appear to be because they actually scouted the players and simply went with their preseason list minus graduates.

Amed Rosario

Brandon Nimmo
Gavin Cecchini
Desmond Lindsay
Robert Gsellman
Wuilmer Becerra
Luis Guillorme
Marcos Molina

Dom Smith: are his weight and body type concerning? Some people wonder if that might affect his health, flexibility and durability in the future, while others think that doesn't matter as long as he keep hitting.

I think he's going to have to work more on his conditioning. He's a great defensive 1b, but if he puts on 20 pounds he's going to be a DH. Another reader asked about his recent surge and whether i'd slide him up the rankings (he was #44 last week) - no, although I'm very glad to see his performance, it's over a fairly small sample and I prefer to see more extended success. The fact that he's striking out so infrequently is probably the best aspect of this little run he's on.

Would you say that your ceiling has changed at all for Conforto with his recent struggles? Or is it just an injury that is delaying the true breakout?

Nothing has changed except that Terry Collins appears to have lost his mind.

The Durham Bulls would actually be an pretty good partner for the Mets, considering all of the transplanted New Yorkers who live in that area. I can't imagine there are too many natural Rays fans there. The Mets and Bulls were already affiliated back in '67-'68 so it's not that crazy.
.
DanMetroMan : 7/21/2016 4:10 pm : link
This is basically the situation

- Rochester (pray they dump the Twins)
-Syracuse (best chance, following 2018)
-Durham (unlikely but possible following 2018)
- Yankees use their muscle and buy/move a team, leave Scranton and leave that option for us, where we have pursued a move previously.
Buffalo was stupid
Pete in MD : 7/21/2016 4:18 pm : link
to drop the Mets IMO. I realize Toronto is close by but people from Buffalo tend to have this odd dislike for their Canadian neighbors. I know quite a few people from there and none of them are Blue Jays fans. I realize they also weren't happy with the quality of players but that tends to go in cycles.
