I had surgery for a disc that completely exploded and I was mowing the lawn a week later, and running 3 months later.
I'm going to say something now that may surprise you: I am not in JJ Watt's physical class and I'm also not taking the PEDs he is.
Wait and see. It could affect him this year, it could affect how long his career lasts, who knows.
Agree he can emerge from this 100% time will tell. Look at Gronk...
Source NFL.com, BTW.
On the thread about when/ how to extend OBJ, several people mentioned Watt's early extension as a model. I had read that he had a difficult season this past year, injury related, but didn't realize he in fact would need surgery to get back to being the player he was...
And folks know how this goes. He'll miss a couple of games and rush back to play where he won't be the same dominate player for some time after he returns.
Such as a microdiscectomy - where portions of damaged disc is removed to relieve the pressure. It's much less serious than a "regular" discectomy (bone is removed) or fusion surgery (disc taken out and metal used to stabilize that area)
If not, why would he wait until the first day on the job before having surgery?
Obviously he was hoping to solve the issue with other means than surgery. The Drs. must have indicated that was a possibility. Surgery is never the first option unless it is the only way.

Correct. Anyone that hasn't gone through it or hasn't been on the brink of needing it doesn't understand the varying degrees of severity for both the injury and the surgery options.
A 10 week timetable means its 100% not fusion and most likely a microdiscectomy to remove a small portion of the disc. You are up and walking within hours after the operation, and can start doing light workouts after a few weeks.
Now, 10 weeks can certainly vary but i wouldn't be surprised if its more. I'm guessing they won't PUP him (what we should have done with JPP) and that they will live with him missing the opener and another game or two, but long term PUPing him is probably the best option.
no one just picks surgery as soon as your back pops Â
or when you experience symptoms. You get a couple opinions, do many weeks of rehab, try an epidural, and then go to surgery if all else fails. I'm guessing that's what he's been doing all spring and summer.
Have but that's a quick timeline. I had a minor surgery to repair a slightly herniated disc after fighting it for 5 years (18-25). Funny thing was for me the disc was barely herniated but the pain, stiffness, and loss of range of motion was huge. With that said I have never felt weaker or more immobile than I did after the surgery. Especially when you are young, surgery I am told is the last resort. The recovery for me was long and tedious, I didn't even get back to lifting until 6 months after and dropped from 195-205 to 160-165. Lost all confidence in my back and wanted to make damn sure it was healed before I ever fucked it up again like that.
I had a microdiscectomy a few years ago. Back to work in 2 weeks. Your activity is restricted for about 2-3 months. After 6 months I felt normal again. I would think they will PUP him. If he comes back before he is healed and has a setback his season is over.
to find more than a handful of linemen on either side of the ball not using PED's.
I used to think that once the PED scandal breaks that it would be a huge issue for the NFL, but I've come to realize that everyone already knows and has a general "meh" about it.
The concussion thing has become what I thought the PED scandal would be.
I just hope one of the league's greatest players (EVER) gets healthy and healthy soon.
Hope your being sarcastic.
No sarcasm. He is the best defensive player in the league, overall. If you went over the last five years his statistics and awards (NFL Defensive MVP 3x already) you can argue he is already to be considered a simply dominant force who must be double teamed. He is a one man show at that in Houston and still produces. If he plays 12 healthy games this year, he'll have 15 sacks, watch.
and you could put his recent four-year stretch up there with any defensive player ever. The guy is incredible and has already shown the peak of an all-time great. It's just unusual for a player to start so early in his career at such a level. All he needs now is longevity, even with a drop off, to make the Hall of Fame after his career.
His first five years in the League are rather similar to what Mike Trout is doing in baseball.

Exactly. And assuming he plays I'd say at least 10 games this year at a high level, accumulating 10+ sacks, his "aura" as an all-time great will go untainted. Strahan missed stretches of time due to back and shoulder issues. It happens. I just want to see the guy back cause he is a stud and a good guy off the field helping kids and so forth.
I agree. The guy is a stud and what makes him so special is his versatility. He can play anywhere on the line, he can get after the quarterback, he blocks down passes, he stuffs the run, and he has great hands.
As far as his image: there are a lot of people who claim that his "Captain America" persona is fake and manufactured-- but you know what? Fine with me. I'd prefer that it were genuine benevolence, but no one is perfect; yet superstar athletes are influential whether they want to be role models or not. With how many players make the news for awful reasons, I wouldn't mind if more players pretended to be great people by being such an active member of their communities and putting up an image that kids can model.
They were reading off the list of injuries he was playing with last Â
"J.J. Watt finally opened up about that mystery bruise he posted on Instagram last week. Last season, he suffered a hit to his right thigh during the first half of the Texans Week 4 game against Buffalo. The result was a monster-sized purple splotch starting from his upper thigh to his knee.
“That was a beautiful block by Fred Jackson," Watt said Wednesday. "He did what anybody would have done which is exactly what I would have done. I had to make a decision between trying to block the pass or trying to protect myself. I decided to try to block the pass and Fred made me pay for it which is what he’s known to do, so he got me pretty good.”

Really bad news for the Texans and their fans.
Perhaps the tried epidurals or other non-surgical interventions before they went for surgery.

Any evidence to support the claim Watts is on PEDS?

After getting taped up in the locker room at halftime, Watt emerged in the second half with an interception returned for an 80-yard touchdown just 1:32 into the third quarter. "

He'll get healthy again this year and dominate when he's back. He is just one of those guys who "wants it" and it shows.
