Uncle Frank : 7/23/2016 12:12 pm
Alright boys, time to pick yourselves back up off the floor and follow your 'Ole Uncle Frank into battle. Today we take over a playoff spot, one that will eventually get us the ring. The Ace is on the hill. Expect a dominant performance. Remember boys, "it's not the guts you bring on the field, it's the ones you leave on it"-Unknown General.

Trade deadline fast approaching!
Should the Mets make a move on TB Slugger Eva Longoria? He would be a valuable, very valuable fog in the old line up and lead us to the ring. What say you Mets fans? Is it just a humble RP you are after?

So let's crack open some cold ones, fire up the grill, go own the shore and enjoy a thrilling day of Mets Baseball!

It would be shocking (and risky) to add Longoria + his remaining 100M

unless they think that's a better value/investment than resigning Cespedes after this season (possible). His per year figures are pretty reasonable, so maybe?

Lucroy would seem more like a Sandy move with his contract situation being very similar to that of our top target last year (Gomez). Also a lot of offensive similarities to Zobrist, who was a target at 3 different times in the last 16 months. Lucroy is similarly hard to K, has a solid OBP, has defensive versatility, and has enough pop to do damage in the middle of a lineup (he actually has 1 more XBH than Zobrist thus far this year).

Yup yup yup,

I recommend firing up the old grillaruski and really enjoying a day of baseball at its pinnacle. A perfect late July day, a midsummer nights dream of Americas pastime. This is what it is all about. Nothing more nothing less. I will tell a young man, like you Z (and many others reading) time goes by like a lightening bolt, enjoy these moments whilst you have them. You'll be old and grey☠ before you know it (but still enjoying the game!)
Couple things...
ZGiants98 : 7/23/2016 12:52 pm : link
If Wright has indeed discussed retiring behind closed doors in the offseason it would make a whole lot of sense. The Mets don't really have any legit 3B in the pipeline unlike just about every other position. Two, the Mets would require the Rays to eat some of the salary, say the last year of his deal (20 millionish). Three it guards against Cespedes leaving somewhat. There might not be a better backup plan if Ces bolts for an absurd deal and his contract might actually be pretty friendly all things considered.

Big question is what would it cost? The guy I trust says the Mets did in fact meet with the Rays in Colorado and Longoria came up. Rays announcers have said Mets scouts have been scouting the team. Probably a 1% chance of something happening but their might be a little smoke here.

I think it might happen. Makes too much sense, would be the Gary "the kid" Carter move for this team.

What kinda package do you see getting it done Z?

If they eat salary too? I think it might sting a lot. One of Harvey or Wheeler? One of Dilson and Cheech? Maybe kick in a low level guy like Gimenez? Maybe kick in Asrdubal Cabrera so they have a chap affordable option for next year?

It really just depends on what the Rays want. If they are truly rebuilding they might not even want a Harvey or Wheeler. They might want all young prospects.

Reyes, Cabrera and Flores could all be in the mix at 3rd next year once Rosario arrives - who we know is an untouchable. Not saying any of those guys would stand in the way of Longoria, just that it's not a completely vacant hole right now.

If his arm isn't healthy, it's hard to imagine getting much for Wheeler via trade and if it is healthy we can't afford to give him up right now. Both for this season and the future.

If you can get Longoria for some package of Flores, Cecchini, Robles, Dom Smith, Plawecki, Nimmo, Dunn, etc. sure its' a no brainer. But if the Rays are moving their face of the franchise it's going to take more than that and unless Mike Trout is on the table I don't think i'd move Rosario or Wheeler right now.

Agreed the Rays wouldn't want Harvey due to his injury and contract situation. They will demand Rosario in any deal for Longoria.

ZGiants98 : 7/23/2016 1:40 pm : link
Publicly announced Rosario is untouchable. Why would they trade away a top ten prospect in the game and their SS of the future for a potential 3B of the future who is already 30 and has 6-7 years left on his deal? Doesn't make sense. I could maybe see Wheeler though if they felt he wasn't going to help them much this year.

I'd highly doubt Smith would be either.

Also, how many teams going for it not only need a 3B but are willing to pay most of his contract for the next 6 years? There really isn't going to be a million suitors. I could see 2-3 fits, Dodgers being one.

Everybody is tradeable it just depends on the price. I understand your point though. Rosario isn't a top 10 prospect yet he is in the teens I believe but has a chance to get there once some more players get promoted.

Evan Longoria, on the other hand, is probably never going to happen -- not with that contract. And I'm not trading Rosario, so I imagine the conversation stops there.

I'm guessing that 3B is manned internally for the next 2 years. Between Josey and Flores.....they will play it that way until they can stabilize this pitching staff and see where the all Bone Spurs and Thoracic Outlets settle.

Im thinking heading into 2017 he will be. Yes, in the mid-season rankings he was in the teens. Some players will graduate between now and next year.
I'd be wary of allocating big assets on another high K/hr dependent
Eric on Li : 7/23/2016 4:52 pm : link
like Frazier. He's got great power, but he's hitting .214 and he's on pace for almost 200 k's. That's a pass considering the likely cost in prospects + money.

Right now Lucroy would be the best fit if we don't need to include Wheeler or Rosario. In the offseason resigning Cespedes needs to be the priority, then fill in around him with some solid/versatile pros like Martin Prado. Since we have Reyes to hit leadoff it might make sense to save money by dealing Granderson.

Rosario, Nimmo, Cecchini, and Smith (not to mention Conforto) are all very close and promising, that's why it doesn't make sense to do anything drastic. Adding someone like Lucroy would bridge the gap until someone like Conforto is ready to truly take the reigns on the 3 hole without blowing up our budget.

Wouldn't surprise me. I'm a little jealous you guys signed Maitan. The Mets have a ton of talent in their lower levels. There's going to be very little lag before our system is top 10 again IMO. We should be middle of the pack next year(kind of where we were this year) at worst, and then back into the top 10 the following year. Sandy has truly done a remarkable job here.

MIAMI -- New York Mets first baseman Lucas Duda hopes he is about two weeks away from beginning a rehab assignment.

Duda landed on the disabled list on May 23 with a stress fracture in his lower back. He just started swinging a bat on Saturday, but had been engaged in some baseball activity all week in Port St. Lucie.

"I think in the next couple of weeks it should be healed and I'll be ready to go on an assignment and get back here as soon as I can," Duda said Saturday at Marlins Park, where he visited his teammates. "... I'm swinging, running, throwing. And I think right now everything feels good. It's just a matter of time."

Of course, James Loney enters Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins hitting .287 with five homers and 18 RBIs in 157 at-bats since joining the Mets. So it will remain to be seen what the dynamic is at first base among the pair of lefty hitters once Duda ultimately returns.

"I think I can definitely help," Duda said. "I want to get back as soon as I can. But it's a process, and I have to respect the process."

Also among rehabbing players, manager Terry Collins indicated Zack Wheeler is likely to throw batting practice for the first time during the upcoming week as he works back from Tommy John surgery. Beginning that activity would put Wheeler about 10 days way from beginning a rehab assignment.

Neil Walker
2015- 36 Good Fielding Plays, 24 Misplays & Errors
2016- 17 Good Fielding Plays, 18 Misplays & Errors

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Walker hit .214 for the month of June. He's hitting .167 for July. And Wilmer sits.

And the longer this keeps up, it's doubtful he even qualifies for the QO...which was real value for getting him...the pick. What a disaster Walker has been.

Niese might be more useful to the team than Walker has been.

I don't think they have that qualified (A/B) system any more. I believe any free agent can be offered the QO, the risk with Walker though if he doesn't play like he did in April the 2nd half is he'd accept it (15.3M for one year? Why not accept it?) If doesn't decline the QO and sign a contract elsewhere the allure of Walker over Murphy completely backfired - besides the offensive differences.
Matz has had kind of an awful stretch

over the last 5 games or so. It very well be because of the bone chip but he's got to get it together. The velocity seems fine. We need him tomorrow.
No one is going to sign Walker this offseason

I had doubts that anyone was giving up a pick to sign Murphy this time last year too. Hopefully Walker goes on a similar run.
Tonight's recap

I think the Walker deal was an attempt to make up for losing

The pick with Cuddyer. Let Murph go and then let Walker go the next year and you wind up with two supplemental picks, which is arguably better than the first rounder you lost.

The problem is that it is a classic case of trying to kill two birds with one stone and missing both of them.

Unless Walker has some miraculous turn around, he is not getting the QO because the chances of him getting a better deal somewhere else are close to zero. And Murphy was the best bargain in free agency last year.

Mistakes happen. The key is to move on and not try to redeem the past. Let Walker go and give the young guys a chance.
It really has nothing to do with that

Walker was better than Murphy. The end. Sandy didn't have a crystal ball and know how this season would play out.

Except for 2015 (the most relevant year when determining who to sign in 2015 offseason) when Murphy had a (barely) higher fWar. That fWar doesn't even include his playoff domination (NLCS mvp, etc.).

Sandy picked the wrong 2B. The end.

reads harsher than I intended it, sorry bout that Z. Not coming after you. Just saying that it's not fair to say Walker was definitely better when Murphy had a better 2015 and was trending WAY WAY up in September and October.
