NFT: chipmunks this year- our solution

snickers : 7/23/2016 7:37 pm
I know many of you, I believe, have complained about the number of chipmunks in the northeast this year. We were infested with them and must say we were losing our plants and flowers. We finally purchased a cage and wanted to relay what we used as bait, which was a real success. We used nuts and apples coated with peanut butter. In less than 4 hours 4 of the critters were caught and relocated about 3 to 4 miles from our home. I would never have believed how effective the cage and bait could be. Today, a squirrel decided that the apple coated with peanut butter was also too irresistible. Just thought this might be of help for those with the same problem. BTW the cage is made by Havahart. Hope this helps.
we bought some fox urine off amazon

Nuts covered in peanut butter?
beatrixkiddo : 7/23/2016 8:12 pm : link
Amateur. You should do alkaseltzer covered in peanut butter, and scrap the cage all together. Got to thin the population, it's the only way.
Water bucket...

...of Death. The final solution.
killing chipmunks is pretty damn low

chippies are idiots

I've caught them with nothing in the cage. Put the cage in the same exact spot. they follow the smell of the chipmunk trail straight into the cage. they actually beat down a little path from the woods across my lawn and into the gardens.
I won't do the water bucket of death
fkap : 7/23/2016 9:04 pm : link
it's cruel. don't have a problem with killing them, but do it humanely.

same thing with glue traps for mice.
I use the bucket of death

they're rodents and drowning they say is one of the most peaceful ways to die.

I'm not burning them alive or anything cruel.

In about 4 weeks I caught

10 chipmunks and 1 squirrel in my bucket that I know off, and I got lazy with baiting the ramp. I noticed a bird was fishing out the carcasses at night so that number could be higher. Bucket is the way to go.

Surrrrre, nothing like the panic of being in a pool with no sides, swimming (something you arent chipmunks arent built for) frantically to keep your breath all the while swallowing more and more water until eventually dying of asphyxiation to send yourself off to that next world.
Why relocate them after you catch them
Bramton1 : 7/23/2016 9:35 pm : link
Teach them to sing and start rolling in the dough.

I fed them first. Get off my back.

The bucket is good, the trap works, but a .177 pellet at 900 fps also does wonders...
I tried hybridizing some roses this spring. I had the hips marked so

I wouldn't accidentally prune them off. The other day my husband asked me if I cut them off. Sure enough, the damn chipmunks ate every one.

The bucket of death sounds good now, but I'd never do it. I had to humanely drown one chipmunk my cat caught and paralyzed and that was hard enough.
Water bucket?

Since we're talking about areas in and near plantings, isn't there a concern about drowning roots of perennials and damaging them?

And speaking of drowning (not), it has been so dry, again, this summer, that perennials and shrubs are already stressed. June was about 2" drier than normal here in the NE and 12 months-to-date has been approx. 11" less than "normal", which is probably on track to become new normal. Sucks, and we're on well water.

I took a 96 second shower last night, my shortest recorded so far. This is falling on deaf ears of wife and daughter....

the chipmunks don't give my strawberries or raspberries claws and long teeth, do they? How is that a fair fight?

circle of life.

Besides I usually throw the corpses over the fence into my neighbor's hedges and every now and then I check to see how big the piles is and it's always empty. hawks, foxes, coyotes, and other carnivores eat the chipmunks (or my neighbor's hedges are a pet sematary).

OK, so fill the bucket part way with cheap vodka or white wine. The little fuckers will be lining up to take the plunge!

Haha +1. I've been feeding a fox or bird all summer and proud of it
Peanut Butter by itself will do it ....
Beer Man : 7/25/2016 9:46 am : link
I've caught a couple dozen using it. Problem is I've caught a couple other critters as well (e.g., Bunnies). I'm more worried that I might catch a skunk
