we've seen that he's still got his arm and that was a vintage triple, even though he's not nearly as fast as he used to be. He can play all over the IF, might eventually play some CF, while probably posting a .700+ OPS at leadoff. I'd be very willing to wager he's still a better offensive player than Denard Spann, with more defensive versatility, and instead of costing $31M, we have him at the minimum.

Just depends how he adjusts to the 2 hole the rest of the season. Last year he was our most consistent player all year and our 2nd best player in the postseason, by a good margin. He's had really bad luck this year with balls in play (40 points below last year and his career average) and he's still had a decent season. 1 year / 15M isn't prohibitive if he's producing, if he's not then it would make sense to re-allocate the resources towards Cespedes.

I like Goeddel as the 6th or 7th option. I agree about Lugo but Henderson should be back soon. Also, we probably need a long man. I'd almost like Gilmartin up in that role. Edgin has been pitching well but his velocity is down. He's also more a LOOGY. If we want a full inning crossover guy I'd like to see either Smoker or Sewald. Plenty of options though. Also if we acquired a Cashner, it would push Verrett back to the pen.

Eric on Li : 7/24/2016 8:26 pm : link
definitely a red flag. Hopefully it's just the byproduct of being on a bad offensive team (4th worst in the NL)? Though, Milwaukee has actually scored 20 more runs than we have this year.

I'd have no issue whatsoever giving up TdA. He has the talent to be every bit the player Lucroy is but he's inconsistent and injury prone. It's almost a lock that Lucroy is the better player the next 2 seasons, which is our window. The 2nd piece is obviously the variable. Rosario and Wheeler are totally off limits. It would hurt to give up Smith now that he's having a power breakout, unless they don't think he's a hard worker. Hopefully they can package Herrera + Nimmo, or something like that instead.

Jeffress is already included in it from what I've read.

Taking Braun would be a salary dump from MIL, and they'd probably be willing to take lesser prospects (meaning further away from the majors).

I think the Mets would do it, especially with Cespedes almost certain to opt out after the season.

I don't think they have the right players to do pull it off though.
Mets don't have many 1B prospects

I'd hate to give up Smith.

They have them - question is what's the right price
Eric on Li : 7/24/2016 8:47 pm : link
Brewers org is empty at 1B and Dom Smith is putting together a pretty good case to be one of the top prospects in the minors (he was Law's highest ranked 1B on the top 50 and obviously not that far from the MLB). Herrera or Flores would probably be their starting 2B tomorrow. Nimmo might even start in CF over what they currently have (Kirk). Lagares definitely would. The Brewers can return TdA and fill 1-2 other positions with cost controlled players wherever they choose, only question is how much another team is willing to play vs. what we are.

Having not played 3B in a decade and having never played 1B, Braun has nowhere to play here and he's got $80M left on his deal. No chance the Mets take him on, even if the Brewers include a big chunk of salary.

Cespedes is playing LF the rest of his Mets tenure, that is clear.

So if he opts out, and you know he will, why not Braun, who isn't much different than Cespedes (half an fwar?) but will actually possibly cost less. Especially if the Brewers eat some cash.

and if Cespedes opts out, the Mets can offer him a QO and get a pick.

There is no question about it, down the stretch Braun and Cespedes in the middle of the lineup with be the best offensive punch the Mets have had since 2006.
Where is Braun playing with Cespedes in LF?

Literally the only feasible spot would be RF which means they send Granderson back to Milwaukee. That's a slight upgrade based on how they're both playing this year, but it seems like a big stretch that the Mets would do that given their aversion to taking on long term contracts.

Vanzetti : 7/25/2016 4:50 am : link

Despite his struggles, he will eventually be a .750 OPS guy with average D. He can take over Lucroy

Plawecki has displayed
Stufftherun : 7/25/2016 7:14 am : link
no signs of being the catcher of the future. His approach at the plate is as bad as it gets and though he has a quicker release than TdA, he doesn't throw out enough base stealers nor does he deter them from running with any kind of regularity.

Cespy sucks it up and plays CF or Grandy does. If not, play Braun at 3B, they're talking about Reyes playing CF, desperate times call for desperate measures.

the Mets can win with this rotation in the playoffs, even without Harvey, but they have to get there, and not with the offense this anemic and there isn't another Cespedes to add nor the deal that makes sense to acquire him. No Duda, no Wright, no Murphy from last year. Duda may come back.

in good news, Wheeler to throw to batters this week. Warthen said he'd be on schedule to make his first rehab start 10 days after throwing to live batters.

They would never do it
bhill410 : 7/25/2016 9:40 am : link
But I would love the outfield to have cespedes and then rotation of grandy lagaras and conforto. Put Braun at 3rd (assuming he feels he can still play there), move Reyes to second or short and either bench walker or Cabrera or send walker to first. That lineup would frankly be awesome

and he was moved off for a reason - he only played 112 games there his first season and had 26 errors. His fielding percentage was under 90%. A decade later at age 32 I don't think revisiting that is an option.

There may be some logic to Braun being a Cespedes replacement in the offseason, but right now there is no way it happens. If the Brewers deal him in the next week it's because someone gives up an asset for him, and that team is highly unlikely to be the Mets.
Smith and TDA

For a catcher in his walk season? No thanks

Lucroy is signed (affordably) for next season also. The team would then have the option to either extend him, or QO him and get a first round pick.
Maybe it's just me, some people love him
pjcas18 : 7/25/2016 11:24 am : link
but I do not see Lucroy as a move to substantially change the offensive complexion of the team.

he doesn't move the needle enough IMO to include Smith. Cespedes last year changed everything.

I think Lucroy provides what everyone expected from TDA which still leaves the Mets a pretty bad offensive team.

I think Smith is very close to the majors

And Id hate to lose that just to go from TDA to a 30 yr old Lucroy
Lucroy's numbers this year are almost identical to Zobrist
Eric on Li : 7/25/2016 11:53 am : link
we all know how much Sandy has loved Zobrist over the years, now imagine that guy playing catcher, where we've currently gotten almost nothing thus far this year, and signed reasonably for this year and next. He'd be a big add. I totally understand not wanting to deal Smith, I'm leaning more and more in that direction.

I predict if we get him it's a package along the lines of TdA, Nimmo, & Herrera for Lucroy and 1 of their relievers.

Not going to argue your opinion but realize that TDA is 27 and been has been playing organized ball since drafted at age 18, 9 years.

I would trade dUNNO and a prospect for Lucroyin a second.
Victor in CT : 7/25/2016 3:16 pm : link
Same rationale as the Gary Carter trade. You've put the success of the team in the hands of a young, talented pitching staff. Give them a veteran catcher who can also hit. dUNNO is 27, ALWAYS injured. If the Brewers want to take a chance on him suddenly staying healthy, do it before they change their minds.

"dUNNO" ? Really? How old are we?

Having a little fun at Francesa's expense. Sorry if I offended your tender sensibilities
Johnson
Metnut : 7/25/2016 3:34 pm : link
and Rivera start again tonight. Flores, Walker, D'arnaud all benched. Loney/Johnson/Cabrera are your 4-6 hitters.
I don't know why they refuse to find a way to get Flores' bat in
Victor in CT : 7/25/2016 3:37 pm : link
the lineup. He's sizzling and they are struggling to score runs. Ride that horse for as long as you can.
