Green Bay has 6 Tackles and 6 Guards that may be worthwhile to keep an eye on.
The article (linked at the bottom) provides and overview of their current T and G's. Some of these lineman will be roster cuts, and therefore of possible interest to the Giants.
According to this article
http://www.acmepackingcompany.com/2016/7/15/12183640/packers-2016-roster-predictions-ol-starters-stay-constant-as-new the Packers starting OL is expected to remain the same, with the key reserves being JC Tretter, Jason Spriggs, Lane Taylor and Kyle Murphy.
These four backups have a nice combination that the Packers have lacked in the past: versatility.
Tretter has proven over the past few years that he can handle any position on the interior of the line and we even found out that he can handle the outside in a pinch with his great performance in the playoff game against Washington. Spriggs comes in as the Packers second round pick and gives the Packers some much needed insurance at both tackle spots. Taylor is a little undersized but he is a mauler and someone the Packers need to fortify the interior of the line. Murphy was the Packers sixth round pick and will give even more depth at the tackle spot. While he was a tackle at Stanford, don’t be surprised to see him get plenty of reps at guard also. |
The article forecasts the following players as expected to be released. Don Barclay, Josh Walker, Matt Rotheram, Jacob Flores, Lucas Patrick, Josh James.
Barclay had a horrendous year and looks to be on the down side after his ACL tear in 2014. Walker is a good player but stuck in that guard mold and would struggle with the speed of the game if he were brought outside. Rotheram was on the practice squad last year and a candidate to remain there this year too. He can play any spot on the interior but there is too much experience in front of him to crack the roster. Flores, Patrick and James are all undrafted free agent rookies and will be fighting for a spot on the practice squad. I expect at least two of these guys to make the practice squad with Rotheram, Patrick or James as the most likely candidates. |
Here is a short preview of each player from the linked article (below).
TACKLES (6)
Bryan Bulaga (Ht.: 6-5½; Wt.: 321; Age: 27; Acquired: D1-'10; College: Iowa)

David Bakhtiari (Ht.: 6-4½; Wt.: 315; Age: 24; Acquired: D4-'13; College: Colorado)
Responsible for fewest "bad" runs on O-line last season with eight after allowing 19 ½ in '14 and 15 ½ in '13. Ten penalties last year gave him 28 for career.
Jason Spriggs (Ht.: 6-5½; Wt.: 301; Age: 22; Acquired: D2-'16; College: Indiana)
Started 47 games for Hoosiers, all at LT. Led 2016 draft class of tackles in the 40 (4.91), vertical jump (35) and broad jump (9-7). Four-sport prep at Elkhart, Ind.
Don Barclay (Ht.: 6-4; Wt.: 310; Age: 27; Acquired: FA-'12; College: West Virginia)
Reliable run blocker at RT as 21-game starter in 2012-'13. Last season, playing 111 snaps at LT and 304 at RT, he allowed 33 pressures (nine sacks) and 12 ½ "bad" runs.
Kyle Murphy (Ht.: 6-6½; Wt.: 308; Age: 22; Acquired: D6-'16; College: Stanford)
Started at RT in 2014 and LT in '15. Brother, Kevin, played at Harvard from 2008-'11 and backed up in the O-line for the Vikings in 2012-'13. Scored 29 on the Wonderlic intelligence test.
Josh James (Ht.: 6-5; Wt.: 314; Age: 23; Acquired: FA-'16; College: Carroll (Mont.))
Neither Murphy nor James were able to complete a 40 for scouts this spring because of hamstring injuries. Four-year starter at LT. Exceptional broad jump of 9-3.
GUARDS (6)
Josh Sitton (Ht.: 6-3; Wt.: 318; Age: 30; Acquired: D4-'08; College: Central Florida)
Unanimous choice on the All-NFC North team for six straight years. Penalized 10 times in 2015, four more than his career high. Looked like fish out of water at LT in regular-season finale against Vikings.
T.J. Lang (Ht.: 6-4; Wt.: 318; Age: 28; Acquired: D4-'09; College: Eastern Michigan)
Yielded just four sacks from 2013-'15 after allowing 5 ½ in '12 and five as a rookie. Primary puller on 29 running plays that totaled 112 yards (3.9).
Lane Taylor (Ht.: 6-3; Wt.: 320; Age: 26; Acquired: FA-'13; College: Oklahoma State)
Played 128 snaps in 2014 (103 RG, 19 LG, six C) and 153 in '15 (85 LG, 68 RG) after not playing as a rookie. First two starts were against the Lions and Vikings last year.
Josh Walker (Ht.: 6-5½; Wt.: 328; Age: 25; Acquired: FA-'13; College: Middle Tennessee State)
Came off practice squad stint in '14 to beat out G Matt Rotheram for backup berth last year. Played 60 snaps at three O-line positions and 17 at TE. Brightest moment came in 32-snap stint against the Rams and Pro Bowl DT Aaron Donald.
Matt Rotheram (Ht.: 6-5; Wt.: 328; Age: 24; Acquired: FA-'15; College: Pittsburgh)
Started 40 games at Pitt (27 RG, 13 RT) and worked at guard last summer before spending much of the off-season at center. Hoping to ward off suitors in early December, the Packers bumped his practice-squad salary from $112,000 to $435,000.
Lucas Patrick (Ht.: 6-3½; Wt.: 313; Age: 23; Acquired: FA-'16; College: Duke)
Started 26 of 44 games, all but one at LG. Ran 5.25, vertical jump of 29, broad jump of 8-10, 29 reps on the bench press and Wonderlic score of 22. Signed June 1.
Would Barclay be of interest if released as projected? 2 years removed from the ACL injury.
Does anyone know of other teams that run a zone blocking scheme and may have a couple of OT / Gs that would be interest to the NYG if they were roster cuts?
Packers by Position: Offensive linemen - (

But seriously, I think Reese will look at all the cuts to see if someone is an upgrade for ALL the backup positions not just OT. A team could be looking for offers for an OT should they be deep and want to move a veteran salary. But generally, I don't think teams want to trade good Offensive Lineman even if they are deep. Everyone is an injury away from being average.
So if their fodder is better than our fodder we take them on I think. Sad isn't it?

Absolutely not. Give up a starting TE (at the very least receiving match up that favors us) for a player that missed an entire year and may have committment issues. No more than a sixtth and maybe a guy like Cooper Taylor or someone else we dont have big plans for. You have zero idea what youre getting at this point.
Plus, I think Chip Kelly may be whispering sweet nothings in his ear about changed culture with Joe Staley helping out in that regard. I think he plays for the Niners next year.

I am still hoping to see a post where Reese trades for OT Anthony Davis, giving up a play (TE Larry Donnell perhaps?) and a conditional draft pick for him, say on Monday so he has time to get to camp and learn our system. LOL.

But Donnell has the potential to be a real redzone threat. I don't doubt we run two TE sets in the redzone with Vereen in the backfield. Donnell is such a big body and he knows how to use it. Just hope he is healthy this year. But I think W. Tye wins the starting overall job.
One thing I did consider is the possibility that should he look "good" in camp and well so do the other TE's (Tye, LaCosse, Adams, Mallek) maybe he gets traded to someone for a player we can use? A team may not want to risk waiting until he's cut if they think he's a fit for them.
Camp will be telling and revealing. I look forward to the TE and RB competitions where we are deep.
