Vikings' OT Phil Loadholt is expected to retire pending meeting with team officials today, sources told @caplannfl and me.
but could be Vikes way of encouraging teams to talk to him and if the "contract is right" trade him for a 6 or 7..Rather than outright cut him and get nothing..Unless he really wants to hang them up and it's not a move by PL to force Vikes to pay him instead of cutting him and/or his salary..
$25 million in his career. Brain trauma or not (I hope not) he did just tear his achilles and maybe just wants to lose weight and walk normally for the majority of his life. Good for him.
maybe not as much as a DT or a Safety/LB/RB, but the risk is very real across all positions. Going 1 on 1 more and being able to control what's in front of you probably helps though.
He's a massive man, I can see him having trouble rehabbing from his achilles and just saying it isn't worth it. In addition to CTE these linemen need to worry about heart disease.
that linemen have it the worst-- that CTE isn't so much about the one-off concussions, but rather the frequent minor shots to the head.
It doesn't even have to be a shot to the head. It's the repeated "whiplash" that comes from firing into an opposing 260lb-320lb DL. One solution that's been proposed is the elimination of the three-point stance.
of Offensive Tackles breaking loose during/after camps.
Seems I've read about a number of other teams also looking for OT depth. Not sure how many, but looks like pickings could be slim for the Giants.
Haven't heard a thing. Maybe someone with inside information will clue us in.
The article on our offensive line mentions he'd have to be re-instated by the NFL our of retirement FIRST and then SF would likely look to trade him. If he did come out of retirement I'd give SF a 7th, assuming he really wants to play. Not everyone really wants it and I don't want a guy like that on the team as they drain motivation.

Ask Justin Pugh.
As for Loadholt, I don't know about concussions. He did suffer a torn pec in 2014, and a torn Achilles last year. That's all I could find.

Phil is in decline.
No mention of CTE concerns.
