King MMQB: Football is back, and so is our vacationing leader. As training camps open this week, here is a look at a disturbing hiring trend, the biggest question facing every team, a favorable stat for Charles Tillman and much more
"In order of significance—in other words, in order of importance toward determining a team’s performance—here are the factors I view as most important for each of the 32 teams."

"18. NEW YORK GIANTS: Will the absolutely anonymous Ben McAdoo make the transition to head coach fast enough for the Giants to contend? Training camp will be some on-the-job training for the quiet guy from western Pennsylvania, trying to replace a two-time Super Bowl winner and a coach his players grew to respect and like a lot. Leadership is a moving target for a coach. It’s vital the new defensive pieces play well right away, but it’s vital that McAdoo proves his mettle in August too."

Giants Birthdays 7-25

Ed Crawford DB/E NYG D13-Mississippi 1956 NYG 1957 7-25-1934
Played in 12 games and recorded two catches for 40 yards with one interception for the Giants. Played alongside fellow Mississippi Hall of Fame inductees Charlie Conerly and Jimmy Patton. Crawford once scored four touchdowns in a game against LSU at Baton Rouge, two on pass receptions, one running the ball and another on a pass interception

Robert Douglas FB W-TB 2006, W-HOU 2007 NYG Training camp 2006, NYG 2007 7-25-1982
Douglas' Giants career consisted of one regular season game in 2007, he then was placed on IR for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

In training camp 2007 he was for a time, the only FB on the roster:

Kenny Hill SS TR-OAK 1984 NYG 1984-1988 7-25-1958
Needing a strong safety with Bill Currier suffering from back spasms, the Giants acquired Hill from the Raiders in 1984. Hill a graduate of Yale with degrees in molecular biophysics and biochemistry, had been a special teams player and backup to the Raiders talented secondary that included, Mike Haynes, Lester Hayes, Mike Davis and Vann McElroy.

With the Giants he would become a starter a strong safety, and would start on the 1986 Championship team. On the way to that championship Hill would achieve more publicity for a helmet first dive into Jerry Rice in the Giants playoff win then for his solid play. Hill was fined $5,000 for his act and received a concerned phone message from his college coach Carmen Cozza of Yale.

That incident was the exception for Hill, who still had loans from his Ivy League education while playing for the Giants and admitted later was smaller than his listed playing size...

Bruce Maher SS TR-DET 1968 NYG 1968-1969 7-25-1937
Acquired from Detroit in one of the better Giants trades of the late 1960's, Maher though undersized to play the big TE's was a smart, tough, veteran who stabilized a Giants secondary that went on a interception binge in 1968. He never made the Pro Bowl but was voted the most valuable Lion in 1965 and received the same honor from his Giants teammates in 1968.
Maher was a two spot star in high school while growing in Detroit. He spent three months in the Tigers minor league system before pursuing football full time. The Colts great Raymond Berry said, "I was hoping Maher could hit .380 and steal 69 bases...Anyway to keep him out of football. That fellow tackles too hard."

He retired after the 1969 season returning home to his native Detroit, leaving SS as a problem area for the Giants, with injuries in the secondary his presence might have helped a 9-5 Giants team make the playoffs in 1970.

Jameel McClain LB W-BAL 2014 NYG 2014 7-25-1985
Nothing, not being cut by the Ravens for salary reasons, injuries including a neck injury, or being waived by the Giants after 114 tackles could keep McClain down...
http://www.si.com/cauldron/2015/09/10/jameel-mcclain-cut-nfl

Brandon McManus PK W-IND 2014 NYG Training camp 2014 7-25-1991
The Giants who in the 80's and early 90's always seemed to have a good extra kicker around having at one time released Mike Lansford, Olindo Mare, and Matt Stover, seem to be matching that now with McManus (trade) and Chris Boswell...
http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2016/02/what_saved_ex-giants_kicker_brandon_mcmanus_career.html

Kent Wells NT W-WAS 1990 NYG 1990 7-25-1967
Wells played in 6 games for the Giants in 1990, before being waived on December 3 of that season.

LT Flowers has to stay healthy for the OL
SGMen : 7/25/2016 11:26 am : link
I'll go out on a limb and say that we can't afford to lose LT Flowers, LG Pugh or OC Richburg. I truly believe all 3 of these guys will have superb, standout seasons. There would be a big dropoff if any of them went down for an extended period of time (weeks) or God forbid the season.

I have to believe E. Flowers technique and pass blocking abilities will be vastly improved with another off-season and training camp under coach Solari. He struggled some last year in this area but this year I expect him to be more effective. I also believe he'll get accolades this year for being on of the better run blocking LT's in football. He is a massive man with long arms and strong. Along with Pugh and Richburg, we'll run better to the left this year than last year.

I also believe RG J. Jerry will have his best NFL season ever. He worked hard this off-season going to that OL camp in AZ to work on his technique. This is his second year in this offense I believe and that will also help. Same goes for RT Newhouse - not the ideal guy but at least he has experience.

Overall, I'd have to venture to say we'll have less "mental errors" due to experience in the offense. We should also see some improved blocking with TE Tye developing and FB Johnson coming to the team. We will run the ball better behind this group this year than last year. We weren't bad down the stretch last year either so I believe in our run game being no worse than "middle of the pack" and so forth.

Health, as always, is the key. If we get through camp wth the starting group all practicing together and working together with coach Solari we'll be in good shape for the season.

I am looking forward to hearing about the development of OC Brett Jones (does he stick?) and RT Hart. We need the youth to develop and be bonafide capable as it is inevitable that dings happen. Also, we have UFA's on the OL this off-season and need to know if guys like Hart and Jones have starting potential.

Last word: I do believe the Giants will pursue the best OT cut out there IF as the article notes the move makes sense and is clearly an upgrade. Problem is, you sign a guy off the street, he has a learning curve so he likely wouldn't start over Newhouse. At least not right away.
Thanks dawg great work as the news heats up
