Two adults no kids driving from NJ to Savannah. What are the interesting cities/sites/places to stop by other than Washington and Charleston? Figure on 10 days to 2 weeks for the trip. Thanks for any help.
What are your interests? Lots of Civil War stuff. Colonial Williamsburg. Chincoteague/Assateague if you like sleepy coastal towns. Ocean City, MD if you like rednecks and boardwalks. Ashville, NC is nice but a bit out of the way.

My wife and i drove to Charleston two summers ago, and although a bit longer distance wise we did 78 to 81 to 77. It is an extra 100 miles or so, depending on where you're traveling from - but it's a really nice, scenic drive. You drive right through Shenandoah national park, the George Washington and Thomas Jefferson national forests. We drove straight through, but there was no traffic and great scenery along the way.
this is kind of difficult to do without knowing your interests
There's a ton of history in Virginia, but if that's not something you're interested in then it would be a waste of time to suggest things like the Museum of the Confederacy.
you'll drive right through Charlotte which would be a nice way to spend an afternoon or evening. Then the next day, go to Charleston and spend an afternoon there and then take the coastal route to Savannah - or get on 95 to speed up a bit.

Yeah I definitely 2nd staying off 95 -- 81 to 77 is the way to go!!!
is to take the really long way, but a scenic one. Go down through Cape May and take the ferry to Delaware/Md. Go through Ocean City, MD and take the coastal waterway to Virginia Beach. From there, you can go through Raleigh and pick up 95 to drive down to Savannah. Lots of interesting things to see and do, but it will be a haul.
gives a LOT of civil war sites in VA and nice college towns.
Getting back over to Ashville via I 26 is a beautiful ride through Tenn & NC mountains.
Blue Ridge Parkway which passes Asheville (Biltmore mansion, a must see, largest private home and self sustaining estate in the US) is very scenic, but very time consuming conmpared to 81)
Lots of options from Asheville. Continuing on 26 takes you thru Spartenburg and Greenville (a nice up and coming small city with GREAT restaurants) and then still on 26 go to either 1. Charleston (very nice) and then via US17 (yup, the same 17 you have in NJ) or 2. Hop on I95 to go directly from there to Savannah.
Enjoy your trip!
to Asheville is that you are going about 5 hours total out of the way - the 2.5 hours over to Ashville from 77 and then the trip from there to Savannah.
know if you're into it, but my wife and I went to the Riverbank Zoo in Columbia. Also if you don't take 95, you will miss all the Pedro signs and the treasure that is South of the Border.
You might get better results if you let people know what you are into.
