Giants Birthdays 7-26

Chris Claiborne LB FA-STL 2006 NYG 2006 7-26-1978
With LaVar Arrington lost for the year and Brandon Short injured the Giants brought in Claiborne in late October 2006. He played in 4 games recording a tackle and a assist.

Eddie Hicks RB D6-East Carolina 1979 NYG 1979-1980 7-26-1955
With injuries to Doug Kotar and Billy Taylor, Hicks became a starter in his second season. He rushed for a team high 39 yards in a wild 41-35 win at St. Louis to open the 1980 season. However injuries in turn then plagued him. He had shown promise with his speed in training camp in 1979 but a broken hand suffered in college limited him. In 1980 after winning the starting job he was injured again and his season ended after three games.

Bjorn Nittmo PK UDFA-Appalachian State 1989 NYG 1989 7-26-1966
Spent the early part of 1989 on the Giants developmental squad, was actually dropped when he was told the Giants could no longer keep him, but was signed to the active roster a few hours later when Raul Allegre the Giants' kicker was hurt. In his first game against Seattle later that week he made 2 out of 3 field goals, after being flattened by Seahawks outside rusher Dwayne Harper after making his first extra point. He made 9 out of 12 field goals during the season and earned an appearance on the David Letterman show. He would later become an actor "Any Given Sunday" and in 2015 would appear in a documentary as part of an effort to encourage more Swedish students to enroll in US colleges...
http://lbbonline.com/news/nfl-legend-bjorn-nittmo-kicks-us-study-in-to-the-path-of-swedish-students/

Dick Woodard LB D21-Iowa 1948 FA-LA Dons AAFC folded 1949, TR-WAS 1953 NYG 1950-1951, 1953 7-26-1926

After a year in the defunct AAFC, Woodard joined the Giants in 1950 and made key plays at linebacker, no greater than when the Giants held the Browns scoreless in 1950...
"Once, the Browns got as far as the 10 in that last period but lost the ball on a third-down effort when Marion Motley collided with Graham as he was about to take a handoff on the oldest play in the Cleveland book, the trap play. The ball was knocked from Graham's hands and center Dick Woodard recovered for the Giants on the 9-yard line."
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/1950/10/browns_held_scoreless_first_ti.html

He also is related to Kirk Cousins as his grandfather's brother and great uncle and remained a Giants fan after returning to Iowa

LT E. Flowers rated our worst OL last year
SGMen : 7/26/2016 3:30 pm : link
I am not surprised. When LT W. Beatty went down off-season to a torn pectoral, I knew we were in trouble with a raw 21 year old rookie starting the tough LT position. When drafted, everyone said he needed work on his technique.

I've always said that if just LT W. Beatty, CB/S B. Jackson and DE Jason Pierre-Paul had stayed healthy for 16 games we'd have made the playoffs. We had more injuries than anyone and it hurt in multiple ways.

The thing I LOVE about Flowers is his desire, his inner attitude. He wants it and this year he'll be very much improved in pass protection and he'll also be a top rated run blocking LT. There is no doubt in my mind coach Solari has worked with him and E. Flowers has worked hard without him too. If Flowers improved by leaps and bounds this offense will improve by leaps and bounds.

We pick on RT Newhouse and RG Jerry because neither are run blockers but it was Flowers who cost us just as much. We were ranked 8th last year on offense. Imagine what we'll be ranked this year with another year of experience in the McAdoo system; with improved OL play due to experience and continuity; with improved WR's assuming Cruz bounces back and Shepard shines; and improved TE and FB play?

I honestly believe this offense could be top 5 in yards and points scored. This assumes we stay healthy and that our running backs contribute. If we can convert redzone plays into TDs over FGs we'll be on our way.

3rd and 1's must become damn near automatic 1st downs on the ground with FB Johnson leading the way along with improved OL blocking. I think OG Pugh and OC Richburg have shots to make the probowl based on ability.

I have faith that our luck has to change and we stay healthy. I have faith in Eli and the offense. I have faith in the coaching. We will have a top 5 offense and we will win the NFC East.
Thanks Pat!
