What do you think about signing Antrel to a friendly deal?

GiantBlue : 7/26/2016 12:11 pm
He knows the Spags D, is a good citizen and leader and wouldn't be bad in a pinch if injuries occur? Do you think he would be open to a one year deal for the minimum or slightly more? Do we want him at this point?

Antrel Rolle on WFAN: Olivier Vernon just needs to be let loose. #NYG phenomenal fit for him #Giants

Steve Serby @NYPost_Serby · 10m .

Rolle on JPP: I believe he's gonna have a phenomenal year #NYG #Giants

Rolle on WFAN: I know there's gonna be a call soon #NYG
Imo, you let Darian Thompson

Learn on the fly. If Rolle wants to be a backup that can play the slot CB position for us in certain packages then I am fine with that. But I would rather let Thompson get game experience. I don't think sitting is going to do him well since he is such a student of the game as it is.
I love Rolle
ZogZerg : 7/26/2016 12:13 pm : link
You would think we could find a spot for him on the roster as a part time safety/coach for the young guys.
At the end of the day...
trueblueinpw : 7/26/2016 12:15 pm : link
Trel being Trel, Trel is too old.
not sure Trel is the right guy anymore

maybe as a coach -- but the young guys have to play - and Trel is slower than he used to be
to retire as a Giant

Aside from the age/effectiveness factor...
Ryan : 7/26/2016 12:23 pm : link
He's made well over $60M in the NFL and I don't anticipate - seeing as he's had some injury issues the last few years - he'd want to go through the grind of another season for a minimum contract. Not worth it.

He also has 0 history with Spags.
The problem is we don't know what we have in our safeties yet.
robbieballs2003 : 7/26/2016 12:23 pm : link
Do you bring in a vet at the expense of a young kid and then have to address the position again next offseason using up limited resources or do you let the young kids prove it? I am a huge Rolle fan but I just don't know because he is a short term solution. There is no doubt in my mind that he can play that Deon Grant role in this defense. It definitely is a worthy question.

In a perfect world you enter camp and give the kids an opportunity. If they do well then great. If not then you give Rolle a call. The problem is he may not be around at that point in time. In terms of character and leadership it will be hard to find a better player.
I would absolutely bring him in
PatersonPlank : 7/26/2016 12:24 pm : link
He could play a solid FS, mentor Collins, and allow Thompson to ease into the position. All position.

a signing of Antrel is going the wrong direction.

(Besides, we've got so many on the board who think Mykkele is the real deal, or Cooper, or Behre or....) Money better spent on OL if an ORT becomes available

How did you feel about bringing back Deon Grant in 2011?

A vet minimum contract for a proven player who to take some low-pressure snaps at a position we're pretty thin in is certainly worth it, IMO.. and that's excluding that many on the team have played with him in the past and value him as a leader.

This whole idea of "going in the wrong direction" is so faux-narrative driven. The Giants declared what direction they're going in by spending Eleventy Trillion dollars on free agents this past offseason. What is so backwards about bringing in a proven player and seeing if he has anything left in the tank?
No

Metnut : 7/26/2016 12:54 pm : link
depth and the giants' seemingly getting everyone injured, it'd be nice to have him in on a vet min contract. Both our young safeties could benefit from learning from him.
they were just talking to him on WFAN
UConn4523 : 7/26/2016 12:56 pm : link
and Kim Jones was advocating him to sign a 1 year deal to help the Giants.

I have no idea what he has, how much he'd be used, etc. But it would be cool to have him in big brother mode for Thompson/Collins/Apple.
How does Rolle know Spags' defense?

No thanks.
Klaatu : 7/26/2016 1:02 pm : link
With all of the money the Giants spent in free agency, it's telling that they didn't spend any on a Safety. They did invest a 3rd round pick on D. Thompson, after spending a 2nd in a trade up last year to get Collins. My guess is they're satisfied with what they have.
Not a chance
mrvax : 7/26/2016 1:21 pm : link
Rolle was done 2 years ago, maybe 3. You draft your kids and get them on the field. Plenty of playing time. Hopefully you'll find you drafted your next Rolle.

Thanks for your prior contributions to the NYG, but:

Was a great Giant

is now well into the twilight of his career. The only contract the team gives him now is of the one-day flavor so that he can retire as a Giant.
Again

I don't get why so many of you afraid to invite him to camp? What is the harm?

Remember when we invited Manningham to camp for a 2nd stint? Remember when he didn't cut it and we cut him? Remember when all was right in the world after.

It's so strange you're all arriving at such definite conclusions in the absence of any real information except his age and subpar (one-year) stint with Chicago last year.
Mike, he was already in steady decline towards the end of the stint
David in LA : 7/26/2016 1:45 pm : link
with us. I wouldn't mind him as a vet that never plays, but these guys are very prideful. You think he'd sign up to not play and get paid vet minimum?

Mike, setting aside the high ankle sprain and the MCL sprain...
Klaatu : 7/26/2016 1:59 pm : link
What's the point? Clearly, the Giants have made a concerted effort to get younger and faster. Rolle doesn't fit that profile. Do the Giants' young Safeties need a mentor? I don't think so. I think what they need is good health, so they get more reps; good coaching, and good game-planning.

transplant Rolles Brain into Thompsons head he would be a
pro-bowler as a rookie Trel has lost more than a step

He was in steady decline?

He played in all 16 games for us, had 87 tackles, 3 INTs and 9 passes defended in his final season for us. Made the Pro Bowl the year before that. I don't look at that and see steady decline.

Regarding pride; I'm not forcing him to sign anything or come to camp without certainties. With my posts here, I'm acknowledging the "no thank you" crew here. We are not remotely deep at safety and could certainly use his services.
His performance fell off a cliff 2 seasons in a row
David in LA : 7/26/2016 2:27 pm : link
but let's talk about a good season he had 3 years ago. You really think he'll turn things around when he's about to turn 34?
If he would accpet the minimum why not
steve in ky : 7/26/2016 2:28 pm : link
No real down side in doing so but I don't know if he would sign for league minimum.
the Bears clearly had buyers remorse. Time to move on.

Arguing about..
FatMan in Charlotte : 7/26/2016 2:32 pm : link
whether he declined here or not is silly. The evidence is clear that he not only had a steep decline with the Bears, but now he's had problems staying healthy too.

Let's bring him in!!!

Stop thinking of this in baseball terms. In the mlb you can add veteran depth to the bullpen back of rotation etc.

The problem in football is if you are "veteran depth" you HAVE to play on special teams. He can't be a special teamer anymore

We need to be younger faster etc. would love if he got into coaching seems like a natural progression for him

He may get a call
aquidneck : 7/26/2016 4:03 pm : link
if we have our usual rash of 5 or 6 injuries to Safties in training camp.
