Bucky Brooks thinks so.

If you take that 3 wr combo

and throw in Vereen as a threat out of the backfield, and a couple of TE's that can create mis-matches, McAdoo should be able to create a lot of opportunities for Eli.

Everyone who isn't a NYG beat writer has Apple at the slot position

All the beat writers say the veteran CBs will likely see more slot corner time than Apple -- at least till he learns.

at the slot CB position as less than the outside positions when, in fact, it is much more difficult to play in terms of responsibilities, techniques, knowing the defense, knowing the blitz schemes, knowing the run fits, knowing the opposition, and being able to really cover all parts of the field (left, right, and deep). A slot corner doesn't have the benefit of the sideline. An outside corner probably has the easiest job on the field mentally. This, by no means, means it is an easy job. You usually get matched up against the best athletes on the field and if you lose your battle the whole world knows it. However, the slot CB position is very demanding and extremely difficult for a rookid to handle. I havd said it before but I do not see Apple playing the slot this year. And, as we have seen, others have been moved to that position while Apple has play a lot on the outside.

Question for Bucky Brooks
Modus Operandi : 7/26/2016 2:29 pm : link
Has there ever been an NFL franchise, since the inception of the draft, that HASN'T been poised to get the most of their rookie class?

GM: "Well fuck, that was a shitty haul. Let's not play them and hope the fans forget."

I think you are taking this in a way it is not meant to be. He is saying that the Giants will get more out of their rookies than all the other teams.

I would be stunned if veteran CB Jenkins wasn't in the slot corner role all season. CB Apple will learn the slot, for sure, but to think he can play that position with his level of experience is asking a lot. Most teams run three wide receiver sets probably 60% or more of the time today due to passing game rules that benefit wideouts.

More importantly, by the end of 2016 (last four games), I would NOT be shocked to see Apple, Shepard, Thompson, Goodson and Perkins all playing more than 50% of the snaps.

Actually, I see Apple on the field opening day taking 50% or more of the snaps as the outside CB. Shepard will play like 80% of the snaps if not more. S D. Thompson may be the starter and see 90% or more of the snaps. LB Goodson will likely backup and challenge for more playing time later in the season. RB Perkins has a lot to learn but if he can run, catch AND learn pass protection he likely is brought along slowly and inserted more late in the year with fresh young legs and speed. TE Adams is likely inactive most of the season but learning and he has potential.

This feels like Reese's best draft class ever maybe. OBJ and 2014 was his 2nd best I hope.

Bucky Brooks usually offers unbiased assessments
Makogman : 7/26/2016 3:16 pm : link
While many here may doubt the prowess of young Eli, he has shown an ability to learn and adjust quickly. While I think JJ (Jackrabbit) will probably man the slot, given his innate preparedness and play-making ability, Eli Apple will be a huge contributor as a rookie.

Darian Thompson and Sterling Shepard have been raved about by the coaches all spring, therefore their contributions should be anticipated. That means 3 out of the 6 member draft class are expected to major players. 50% contribution from the incoming draft class qualifies as major participation.

Now what if Goodson and Perkins, even Adams in the second part of the season contribute, wouldn't that validate BB's assessment as to number one draft class offering the best return?

Therefore the analysis and projections should be considered spot on, inspiring optimism rather than critique. I have gone on record stating that the 2016 draft class may have as great an impact as the 2007 draft class. Which would mean catching lightening in the bottle twice in the first 2 decades of this young century.
Out of Goodson, Perkins, and Adams
robbieballs2003 : 7/26/2016 3:28 pm : link
I think Goodson has the best shot to get some meaningful reps.

Perkins could if injuries occur in the backfield. Perkins would be a nice third down back but that is kind of Vereen's role. Perkins would have to work on his pass protection. He also missed a lot of time so far. I think it is an uphill battle for him to get any playing time this year outside of injuries.

As far as Adams goes, i just think there is way too much competition in front of him and with his limited experience in college I look at this as a redshirt year for him. I really do not see how, in his rookie year, he will leapfrog Donnell, Tye, and Johnson with even LaCosse and Malleck getting high praise.

The guy you're covering in the slot almost never goes long. Therefore it is easier to play than corner. And there are only 2 corners. I can't figure out who Spagnuolo's primary slot cover is. But, Apple would find the slot easier to play. The blitzing would be cake for him. He's a strong, fast guy, who does not allow himself to be Bogarted.

However if they keep him there, he would not be working on his prime deficiencies as a corner which are not allowing the receiver to get in his bubble or blind spot , and knowing when to look back. He also loses track of the receiver's relationship to the sideline stripe. That's critical when you are trying to squeeze an outside route. If you leave a hole for the receiver, you simultaneously create an angle for the quarterback to drop the ball in.

Eli is talented. He has a chance to be excellent. I'm glad he is a Giant. He was an East Coast Buckeye, which I always like. But it would be foolish to expect him to come in here and not struggle some. It is a difficult position to play.
