Roster Predictions: Offense

SGMen : 7/26/2016 9:54 pm
Our roster, barring injury, will look like this I'm thinking:
QB: Manning, Nassib
RB: Jennings, Williams, Rainey, Perkins, Vereen
FB: Johnson
TE: Tye, Donnell, Lacosse, Adams
WR: OBJ, Cruz, Shepard, Davis, Harris
LT: Flowers
LG: Pugh, Gettis
OC: Richburg, Brett Jones
RG: Jerry, Hart
RT: Newhouse, Stingley

What changes would you make? 6 WR's or 4 TE'?
You have too many RB's
blueblood : 7/26/2016 10:02 pm : link
and Too many TE's... You need some depth at the LT spot.. you have none..

Actually, the backup LT is most likely Newhouse or Pugh. We'd shuffle Hart to guard or Gettis.

I thought hard about RB and why we'd keep Rainey over say Dwarka but figured we may keep a proven veteran who is only 28. If Rainey isn't kept we keep a 6th WR. We are deep at TE and each has differing skills. I like Donnell to stick because he is a good redzone threat.

Only 28?
robbieballs2003 : 7/26/2016 10:12 pm : link
RBs fall off a cliff around that age.
Defense Prediction: getting to 53 so things make sense
SGMen : 7/26/2016 10:15 pm : link
PK: Wing, Brown
DE: Vernon, JPP, Wynn, OWA
DT: Snacks, Hankins, Bromley, Nix
LB: Kennard, Brinkley, Robinson, Casillas, Goodson, Herzlich
S: Collins, Behre, Thompson, M. Thompson, B. Jackson
CB: Jenkins, Cromartie, Wade, Apple, UFA CUT (TBD)
ST: Zak DeOssie

I think we'll add a veteran CB cut to round out the group.
What does Herzlich bring to this team?

We have 31 year old RB Rashad Jennings and we better hope he doesn't fall off a cliff this year!

Honestly, just special teams, understanding of the defense and run stopper. He can't chase and he can't cover so if he has to start we are in trouble.

The weakest spot on this defense may be backup OL but the next weakest is maybe LB. I actually think we'll be OK at safety if they stay healthy and develop - a big if but there is talent there.
In your situation
robbieballs2003 : 7/26/2016 10:19 pm : link
I would easily drop Rainey and Herzlich and keep Lewis and Powe as of today.

Maybe, but are Lewis and Powe good special teams players? I honestly don't know.

My thing with Rainey is he has NFL experience and if Jennings does at age 31 fall off he may be the "go to" guy. Again, just posturing. The Giants.com roster projection had Herzlich on the squad. Maybe Shepard sticks instead?
Experience in not being able to stick with a team?
robbieballs2003 : 7/26/2016 10:27 pm : link
I don't get your point. Rainey is insurance for a player like Vereen but then we drafted Perkins so for Rainey to stick, imo, both Perkins and Vereen need to be injured.

Your point has merit. it is but a guess that Rainey sticks to be a guy who is counted on to take some carries every game. Or not.

RB: Jennings, Williams, Perkins, Vereen
WR: OBJ, Cruz, Shepard, Harris, Davis, Powe

That better?

LB: maybe Shepard over Herzlich?
As of today I think Lewis sticks over Powe
robbieballs2003 : 7/26/2016 10:50 pm : link
Shep sounds very intriguing at LB.

LB Shepard has proven he can play and could surprise. While the only LB we have that I think has a shot to really shine and get reward accolades is LB Kennard, guys like LB Robinson can surprise. Shepard could be the run down LB over Brinkley?
The Giants prolly won't carry 5 RBs, only 4, with Coprich landing
BlueLou : 7/27/2016 6:06 am : link
on the PS.

They will most likely carry 6 WR, and it would be really helpful if #6 would play STs which prolly gives Powe or Dable a small edge. Love the idea of a 6'4" 220+ # WR who runs a 4.5 40 flying down field to cover kickoffs and punts. Well punts, anyway..

They will not carry more than 3 TEs plus Johnson who can take reps at TE. Heck theyight even go with 2 TEs plus Johnson and Whitlock because of Whitlock's STs play.

It's hard to imagine that 3 of the 6 players Quinn noted as his best STs guys getting cut - but that's what many BBIers are expecting, that Herzlich, Whitlock, and Darkwa will all be cut.

9 OL is prolly right but might go only 8...

If Adams doesn't have a knack for and pick up STs fast he could be cut.
RB-FB-TE will likely account for eight roster spots.
Big Blue Blogger : 7/27/2016 7:04 am : link
Ten is unsustainable. And I think a 25-25 split between offense and defense is more likely than 26-24. If the roster tilts toward offense, the extra guy will likely be a WR, not a RB or TE.

I could imagine the roster briefly looking like that after the final cutdown, but it would have to change as two things happen:
1) Waiver claims are settled in the next day;
2) Vested veterans are signed in Week 2.
There's a chance the Giants could try to get away with five WRs.
Big Blue Blogger : 7/27/2016 7:21 am : link
I doubt it, but it's possible. In that scenario, the practice squad would probably be WR-heavy, with Dablé occupying the bonus international spot and at least two others who still have PS eligibility hanging around as injury insurance. Whether those guys attract any interest on the waiver wire might depend on what they do in pre-season and injuries to other teams.
Highly doubt the Giants keep 5 RBs + a FB
ZogZerg : 7/27/2016 7:23 am : link
4 TEs is also a reach and doubtful.
Offensive roster prediction
Gross Blau Oberst : 7/27/2016 7:40 am : link
OK, I’ll play. Here is how I see it.

25 on Offense.

4 OT – Flowers (LT), Newhouse (RT), Stingily (Reserve LT), and Cleary (or Rogers) (Reserve RT). Newhouse will surprise many this year is a good way.
4 OG – Pugh (LG), Hart (RG), Seymour (Reserve RG), and Farrell (Reserve LG)
1 C – Richburg. (Seymour and Farrell both can (have) play Center. Farrell has played all 5 positions in the NFL.
4 TE - Tye, Donnell, and Adams and Will Johnson (HB). If they can find a partner, I could see Donnell traded and LaCosse making the roster.
6 WR – Beckham, Shepard, Cruz, Davis, Harris, Lewis. Dable’ to the PS.
0 FB – this position is going away and replaced by the HB (see TE’s)
4 RB – Jennings, Perkins, Vareen and Williams. I expect Williams to have a bounce back year.
2 QB – Manning and Nassib. This is not the year to carry a 3rd QB

My
AcidTest : 7/27/2016 8:41 am : link
thoughts:

4 RBs. Rainey is out.
R. Lewis is the sixth WR. Powe maybe the seventh.
Veteran OL for Gettis.

Don’t think Nix, Herzlich, or Jackson make the 53. Nix will be replaced by Melvin Lewis, and Herzlich by Sheppard. Deayon is the fifth CB. Remember he can also return punts, which increases his value.
There..
FatMan in Charlotte : 7/27/2016 8:46 am : link
is very little chance they will carry 5 WR's.

6WR's is likely and this might be the year they go with 7 WR's, especially with the possibility a few of them can play ST's.
Hart is a RT not a guard
BillT : 7/27/2016 9:29 am : link
He will either start or backup RT. They will keep 4 RB and 3 TE. I think they will keep 7 LB and probably 4 safeties though that's a 50/50 proposition.
BBI lists Hart at RT
Gross Blau Oberst : 7/27/2016 11:24 am : link
and Hart played some RT in 2015. However, Hart will be a much better RG than he will ever be a RT. Hart played G in college and is better suited physically and skill set wise for RG. Hart replaces Jerry. Newhouse remains RT. A much better right side of the line emerges.

Hart didn't play OG in college except for a few games as a sophomore. He played RT exclusively in his junior and senior years, starting 28 consecutive games at the position.
And as much as I hate to sound like the Jerry troll...
Klaatu : 7/27/2016 11:52 am : link
If you honestly think that Bobby Hart is going to supplant John Jerry at RG, I suggest you think again. It's not happening unless Jerry gets hurt.

I forgot OL Seymour can play center. He likely makes the team.

I did this post for purely FUN and speculation purposes.
I just think we have quality at the TE position as well as special teamers in Adams and Lacosse. We have limited blockers at TE which is why I think TE M. Lacosse sticks - he is purportedly a solid blocker and he flashed as a receiver.

Special teams is the key. The "last guy" at RB, WR, S, LB has to be able to play on special teams otherwise it is hard to justify him sticking. I don't think we'll risk TE Adams for the PS unless he shows little in camp.

My slightly revised projection, assuming health
SGMen : 7/27/2016 2:16 pm : link
Our roster, barring injury, will look like this I'm thinking:
QB: Manning, Nassib
RB: Jennings, Williams, Perkins, Vereen
FB: Johnson (also HBack)
TE: Tye, Donnell, Lacosse, Adams
WR: OBJ, Cruz, Shepard, Davis, Harris
LT: Flowers
LG: Pugh, Seymour
OC: Richburg, Brett Jones
RG: Jerry, Hart
RT: Newhouse, Stingley

I removed RB Rainey and changes OL Gettis to OL Seymour since Seymour can play OG and OC some. The reason I have OL B. Jones as a backup OC and OG is he now has an off-season of AMERICAN football and its techniques. He has also bulked up to 318 pounds now. He was pushed around last year a bit but not this year. He clearly has desire, heart, drive and talent but has he learned the technique? We shall see in camp.

I agree wholeheartedly. What I would love to see and hear about from RT / RG B. Hart is that he is "pushing for starting time" based on his improved abilities. If he shows that he can play RT, well, he may supplant OT R. Newhouse next year. And maybe Canadian OC / OG Brett Jones develops into a starting OG and supplants J. Jerry. Both Jerry and Newhouse are UFA's and may get more money elsewhere....just saying.

Klatuu, OK, I'll give John Jerry great credit for
Gross Blau Oberst : 7/27/2016 2:31 pm : link
attending the Bentley's linemen training program and that he is working to improve his overall game. Perhaps you are right and JJ remains the RG starter. However, I still think that Hart is not an NFL level RT, and is better suited to be an NFL Guard.

Checkout the NFL scouting reports on Hart, most say he is not an NFL Tackle, and is better suited to be a Guard.

Necessity may force the Giants to place Hart as the backup RT, but not as a first choice.

RT, or any offensive line position, has a lot to do with technique. I use OG/RT/LT David Diehl as an example. A 5th round draft pick, no one after the draft would say he'd ever be able to play LT and play it well at that. But he mastered his craft and played well for us along the entire OL.

Hart may never probowl as a RT but if he is just a bit above "middle of the pack" I'll take it for now for year #3 and with a year's experience maybe 2018 he's super solid and getting a long term deal from us.

We simply don't know how much coach Solari can develop him. We'll know this camp.
