PUP question

ChicagoMarty : 7/27/2016 4:47 pm
Will Jints put anyone on PUP before training camp begins?

If so, whom?
Cruz.

3. Health Check. The Giants came out of the spring relatively healthy, or so it seemed. McAdoo wasn’t exactly forthcoming with injury specifics, so for all we know, there’s a possibility of a guy or two starting out training camp on the PUP list (safety Cooper Taylor, recovering from sports hernia surgery and linebacker J.T. Thomas, “lower leg” are two names to watch here.) It’s a matter of semantics–McAdoo, remember, never said of his injured players they’d be ready for the START of training camp, just for training camp. So we’ll see if the Giants have a full 90-man roster available when they report.

She also mentions Cruz prior to this.

2. Cruz Control. The Giants allowed Victor Cruz an opportunity to get on the field to take some team reps this spring, even though the reps were done at walk-through pace. McAdoo has maintained all along that there is no rush where Cruz is concerned, thereby leaving the question as to when he actually puts the pads on and starts knocking heads with defenders. Either way, don’t expect to see Cruz for the first couple of preseason games as the Giants continue to make sure he doesn’t suffer any unexpected setbacks as he did last year.

I don't think Cruz starts on PUP. I thought he should have started there last year, but that's over with.

Anyway, those are just my guesses, nothing concrete.
If Cruz

goes on PUP, BBI will implode....
Taylor and Thomas might fit the mold for starting camp on PUP.

Especially Taylor, since he's recovering from recent surgery. Ultimately, having him available as a mid-season injury replacement could prove just as useful as having him occupy a roster spot Week 1 as a backup safety. The grimmer reality for him is that if he can't play in the early pre-season games, he's probably done as a Giant.

If Thomas begins camp on PUP, it will be a day-to-day thing. If he can't practice, it costs nothing to start him out on PUP, and it keeps open the option of regular-season PUP in case he suffers a setback. He needs to get out there, though: his position isn't guaranteed, even on a mediocre linebacking corps.

Cruz doesn't really fit at all. Sure, he'll start camp on a pitch count, but the pitch count on PUP is zero. That's not going to help him get back into football shape, which is the main challenge now, not healing.

In any case, none of these guys seem likely to remain on PUP all the way through pre-season, so the whole topic is probably academic.
What about some of the other guys who were shut down in the spring?

I'm specifically thinking of the mysterious "lower leg" injuries suffered by Mykkele Thompson and Matt LaCosse.
Looks like we have an answer.

Per Raanan, Jay Bromley is a PUP candidate after bone spur removal.
