NFT: Attending PGA Championship 1st round tomorrow at Baltusrol

Any BBIers attending? I just got hooked up with tickets from a client. Pretty excited, I've never attended a golf tournament, let alone a major. Any tips for attending one of these? Better to follow guys or camp out somewhere, etc? I'm planning on getting there at 7:30am and staying the duration.

Side note: Any long shot thoughts? I'm planning on putting down a few bucks on the tournament.

I went today with my family. My son got a ton of autographs. There are plenty of good spots to plant yourself at Baltusrol. I'd walk the course a little bit and find a spot you are comfortable with to watch players go through. Lots of shaded areas there too.

I see Day, Phil and Rory are going off at 8:30 on 10. I'll probably follow them a bit and wing it from there. You think it will be packed that early? Or does the crowd fill up as the day goes along?

Is quite a distance from where they drop you off. Be prepared to walk a lot. The course is spread out to basically 2 sections.

There will be crowds for those groups early

but the big crowds won't hit the course til late morning.

If you are driving in, you'll have to park in Oak Ridge Park.

You'll get on a bus from there to the course. It's about a 20-30 min bus ride depending on traffic. You can also take the train to Summit station and you'll get shuttled from there to the course.

The bus drops you off near 16 green. The practice area and driving range is northeast of 18 on the other side of the hospitality tents.

I'm pretty sure the only public drop off point is there near 16.

That might be a good plan to head to 10 early then get back to the other side of the course later. The clubhouse is behind 18.

Hit the main merchandise tent early. It runs along 17 fairway. You can bag check your packages after you buy them so you don't have to carry them around all day. The tent will be packed later in the day, and it's possible that bag check will be full later as well.

Going Friday. Been to Baltusrol many times for tournaments.

The 4th is a long par 3 with water and a rock wall guarding the front. Good hole to spend some time at. Also, the 17th is a 647 yard uphill par 5. It's always cool to hang there and see if the big hitters can reach it in two. It's only been done a few times, but there are more guys than ever who have the length to do it this time around.

The right side of 17 green is a good spot

especially if you want to have a chance for an up close look at players. Several players tried to hit 17 in 2 today and missed on that side. Saw a few shots end up where the gallery will be standing.

My brother was a paramedic doing duty there. On a day he was off a friend and myself borrowed his uniforms to hopefully get in, change clothes, and watch the golf. Attempting to park somewhere, the State Police pull us over, see the uniforms, and say follow me. They parked us about 100 feet from the front gate. Walked in and changed very quickly...

The right hand side of the fairway about 300 yards form the tee....

on 17 is a good spot too. The hole starts to dogleg left at that point, and a bunch of tee shots will end up in the area of a little cluster of trees. It's a good spot to see some players up close as they try to bomb one towards the green.
