Pre Season Lofty Goals

gogiants : 7/27/2016 10:00 pm
Only 5 teams had a trio of receivers that each broke 1000 yards receiving in the same season. They are

1980 Chargers
John Jefferson, TE Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joyner
242 rec., 3,762 yards, 26 TDs
QB Dan Fouts
11-5, Lost Conference Championship

1989 Redskins
Art Monk, Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders
245 rec., 3,553 yards, 21 TDs
QB Mark Rypien/Doug Williams
10-6, 3rd place in division

1995 Falcons
Eric Metcalf, Terance Mathis, Bert Emanuel
257 rec., 3,267 yards, 22 TDs
QB Jeff George
9-7, Lost Wildcard Game

2004 Colts
Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Brandon Stokley*
231 rec., 3,400 yards, 37 TDs
QB Peyton Manning
12-4, Lost Division Playoff

2008 Cardinals
Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Steve Breaston
262 rec., 3,475 yards, 26 TDs
QB Kurt Warner
9-7, lost Super Bowl

Eli has just completed two seasons that rank in the top 3 of his 12 year career for passing yards with 4436 and 4410 yds. Only his Super Bowl season in 2011 was better. Also his last two seasons were in his top three for Completion %. In his top 4 for both QB Rating and Total QB Rating.

Beckham has finished two seasons with reception yards of 1305 in 2014 and 1450 in 2015. Sterling Shepard was ranked 13th in the FBS last year for receiving yards at 1288. He is ranked 4th in active career leaders in the FBS for career receiving yards with 3,482. He ranks 9th in receptions. Before the injury year of 2014 Victor Cruz had receiving yards of over 1000 for his 3 seasons with 1536 (2011), 1092 (2012) and 998 (2013 - 12 games). Roger Lewis was ranked 2nd in the FBS in receiving yards for 2015 with 1544. He is ranked 16th in the FBS for career receiving yards with 2,637 as only a sophomore.

As far as I know the Giants came closest to making the list with Eli Manning in 2009 and 2011. They had

2009
1220 Steve Smith
0822 Mario Manningham
0790 Hakeem Nicks

2011
1536 Victor Cruz
1192 Hakeem Nicks
0604 Jake Ballard (TE)

Victor Cruz on the Giants "special" trio of receivers
“I think it can be very special,” he said. “Obviously, we just have to continue to go and learn each other and grow within this training camp, and figure out how we can continue to be dominant and be at the top of our game, and everyone can blend and learn their roles within this offense. I think we can be one of the best ever."

I think if things go well the Giants have the talent to make a shot at that 1000 yd trio receiver list. What do you think? What are some other pre-season lofty goals?
I subscribe to just 1 lofty preseason goal:
The_Boss : 7/27/2016 10:16 pm : link
To have the team 100% healthy for week 1.
I don't think individual goals like this are worth much
BlueLou : 7/27/2016 10:37 pm : link
and prefer the team simply go 10-6 or better and get invited to the post season dance...

I also don't see the Giants with 3*1000 yard WRs because 1) their TEs (Tye/Donnell) and RB Vereen are too important as weapons to ignore, and 2) OBJ should be targeted a LOT MORE than Cruz or Shepard.

How about 40 sacks or 20 plus defensive turnovers as lofty goals?

I think we have an outside shot at having two receivers with 1,000 + yards and a few guys who put up great numbers for their position:

WR OBJ 110-1600-14
WR Cruz 70-900-7
WR Shepard 60-750-6
RB Vereen 60-500-5
TE Tye 60-650-6
TE Donnell 25-250-5
Rest 40-450-5

Those would be incredible receiving numbers, Eli would break his percentage completion, yards and TD marks and be a top 2 candidate for NFL MVP and AllPro honors.

I'll add to be 100% healthy for week 1 AND after the week 1 game. It always seems to me that game 1, when the real hitting starts, you have the most major NFL injuries as compared to any other week of the season.

Beat Dallas and their defense down, win and stay healthy doing it.

Giants 38-24 over Dallas who struggles to put pressure on Eli and who struggles to generate a consistent run game against our front 7.
if cruz has over 600 yards i'll be pleasantly shocked

my sinking suspicion is that he will be an undynamic chain mover if anything.

I am a man of faith. I believe with 21 months to heal the patella and 11 months to heal the calf he is ready to bounce back.

I doubt we see the guy from 2011 to 2013, but if he is close I'll take it. He looked good in that one workout video and then I read about some soccer players who bounced back after 2 years. I have faith Cruz does to.

What a story line it would be if Eli, Cruz, and JPP carry the Giants to another SB this year?
Those are all lofty goals.....
Doomster : 7/28/2016 7:26 am : link
But none of those 5 teams won a SB.....

And once again, we are looking at Cruz like nothing happened the last 2 seasons.....we all want Cruz to be the Comeback Player of the Year, but it has to be tempered with the fact, he has not even been on the field in over a year and a half....

Shepard is a rookie, who has not caught one NFL pass, and yet is looked upon, as an instant starter......yes he will start, but where on the learning curve will he be on September 11?

OBj is OBj.....just stay healthy......

There is absolutely no way each guy gets 1000 yards....there aren't enough footballs...

Harris may be forced back into action, if Cruz, has a setback.....he is a solid, but not a talented WR, and just does not have the experience....you don't want to burn him out at WR, and expect him to keep his high level of play on ST's....

One of the TE's has to step up big time.....Tye had a solid second half...but he was just a blip on the radar of the other team's defense....as the starter, he will get more attention......maybe he can handle it....we know he stays on his feet better than Donnell......but I think Donnell will be the guy close to the goal line....

We have 3 RB's who can catch out of the backfield, in Jennings, Vereen, and the guy I have my fingers crossed on, Perkins.....if Perkins can assimilate the playbook, and protect Eli, I envision some of the runs Jennings had last season, going to the house, instead of just 20 yards.....Perkins caught 80 passes in college, and with him back there, he is not a one dimensional back, that the defense will have to worry about...

Yes, we can all get a little "Gidie(for)" the NY Giants, if everything breaks our way.....

Cruz is Cruz again....Shepard makes us say, "Randle who?".....OBj just gets better, if that is possible....Harris is the "breather" guy.....one of the TE's takes that next step.....Perkins becomes the steal of the draft.....oh, and the OL finally starts to gel.....I think I am getting goose pimples....perchance to dream....

yes the potential is there for this offense....we are due for a few breaks this season to go our way.....first time in three years, that I finally think this team is going in the right direction.....let's hope it all pans out.....

Every NFL player is one hit away from retirement. With today's improved surgeries, guys can come back and perform if they work hard and had a good procedure. Yes, nothing is 100% but with Cruz you just have to hope he bounces back. I don't "expect" a 1000 yard season from him; but, rather I'm hopeful he'll be productive and make us forget Randle and his mental errors.

Rookie WR Shepard is going to learn on the job. I mean, how many NFL 2nd round draft choices "flourish" as rookies? I'm talking 70-1000 type numbers - not many historically so odds are we'll have a young man who is college polished but an NFL work in progress. He'll improve as the season marches onward.

I love the continuity we bring this year. I think D. Harris will be out there at WR at times. I think TE W. Tye, L. Donnell and FB/HBack Johnson bring us our best play at that positon in a long, long time. Johnson can block on the move and will help the run game. Tye's blocking improved as the season went and clearly the last 4 games he was nifty receiving. I expect TE Donnell to be a redzone threat and part of a two TE package that creates redzone mismatches.

I also think the OL does better than most think IF it stays healthy. While there are no guarantees young guys will improve by "leaps and bounds" you have to believe someone like LT E. Flowers does improve cause he sucked last year; worst lineman on the team, ankle and all notwithstanding.

So if our offense can be 5 - 8 in yards and scoring; if our specials are 1- 8; our defense 12 - 15 overall; we'll win the division.

LOL. I'm an optimist, a pre-season / post-draft optimist. But I temper my optimism with realistic expectations as well.

I really want players like WR V. Cruz; FB Nikita Whitlock; WR Shepard; FS D. Thompson; FS/nickel CB B. Jackson; blocking TE M. Lacosse all flourish and exceed expectations. Why? They are some unknowns we need to see flourish as they'd take us over the top.

I think we are bringing more talented, yet raw, youth to camp this year than any I can remember. This is mostly due to the fact that we had so many young guys go on IR last year that they are like 2nd year guys to me, not much experience but talent is there.

Listing: S N. Beehre, S D. Thompson, S M. Thompson, S B. Jackson, RT B. Hart, OC B. Jones, RB A. Williams (does he find his way?), RB O. Dwarka (like his potential), WR G. Davis, TE Tye, etc. Lots of young guys plus our draft class .

Go Giants!

My LOFTY goals
Still a Sam Huff fan : 7/28/2016 8:55 am : link
Come out of the Jets preseason game healthy. I can't remember the last time it happened.
Keep Eli going another full year of continuity.
Stay competitive in every game and win more than our fair share.
Develop a pass rush without blitzing.
See the salsa dance on a regular basis and hear the Cruuuuuuz sound often.
Have the middle of the field not be a soft spot for any tight end, regardless of talent, to make that first down signal.
Continue to hear the color man on tv expound about OBJ's specialties.
Last two:
Stay healthy
Get into and then win the Super Bowl

I'll add redzone = TD not FG attempt. If we had been even "middle of the pack" in the redzone last year instead of 28th in the league we'd have had a top 4 scoring offense instead of 6th, a few more wins I'm sure.

integrate free agents and rookies. Finish injury re-habs, and get everyone going. Be ready for game one. I could not stand it if we lose the opener to the Cows again this year. If we lose that game, it will feel,"Oh no here we go again."
