Giants are expected to enter training camp relatively healthy but one player who could begin on PUP is DT Jay Bromley. He had minor surgery to remove bone spurs earlier this summer.
Interesting given I don't recall reading about his being dinged with surgery / bone spurs during the off-season. This isn't a worrisome issue as bone spurs happen and can be cleaned out but I wonder how much time he misses?
I wouldn't call him a bust just yet. He played a lot last year, wasn't exactly a dynamo but he's still learning. This is the year and the camp where he really had to show up and play well to make you believe he could possibly take over a starting role should DT Hankins leave via free agency. Missing a chunk of camp isn't good for him or the team. Alas, injuries / surgeries are part of the game so we must roll with the punches.
I'm sure we'll know more about this timetable by the end of tomorrow.
Collins says last year's last ranked D is motivation. Top 10 "at least" is the goal this season. #Giants
Top 10 is only possible if we stay healthy, especially the starting / key top 10 guys. I mean, if you lose a WLB like Jonathan Casillas or even MLB Brinkley you'll likely live with MLB Shepard or Goodson. But you can't lose any of the DL, LB Kennard (he'll key blitz and run defense); CB DRC, Jenkins or Apple (projecting he's solid later in year for late season run); etc.
I think we rank top 5 in run defense this year IF we stay healthy.
In the seventh game, they allowed 460 yards to the Matt Cassell led Cowboys.
In the eighth game, they allowed 608 yards to the Saints in the dome.
That is funny. 608 yards? Is that possible even, I'd have to check the game stats but I do recall NO and Brees playing lights out on offense. LOL.
I'm guessing that Collins is just throwing out a game number figuratively to express that it just took time to learn, trust the defensive scheme and so forth. We have a lot of new faces this year on defense but all of them are pretty much veterans outside of our rookie class.
Worst I've ever seen really. Embarassment personified.
Yes, we lost our only bonafide pass rusher to fireworks July 4th - JPP.
Yes, we had pre-season camp injuries to our secondary losing FS B. Jackson an SS N. Behre along with rookie S M. Thompson to achilles.
Yes, we had many in-season injuries to MLB J. Beason, CB Prince, LB Thomas, LB Kennard, DT Hankins, etc.
You have an "average" amount of injuries and no off-season accidents we are 10-6 - oh, and TC's clock management mistakes cost us 2 games. Just a bad season on defense and with HC Coughlin. A real shame.
who cannot bring themselves to criticize LC has read his words all summer.
"lost", "bad in man coverage", "not trusting assignments" "not learning system quickly enough"
this dude is a safety - he needs to do his job. if for one hope we will consider playing Berhe over him if he can't do the job. politics/PR machine aside

I think mostly everyone realizes he had his struggles but it's also fair to assume it wasnt a good situation for a rookie.
He has the physical tools to be a nice player. Maybe coverage wont be his strength but he can get up field and rush the passer and make plays in the box.
Berhe played in all 16 games in 2014 (no starts) and racked up a very impressive 14 tackles! He's light-years ahead of Collins!
Obviously. No chance a 2nd rd rookie could possibly have struggled from playing out of position, learning a new system and having a historically bad front 7 playing ahead of him.
Anyone know what the dead money would look like if we just cut Collins now? Might as well just cut our losses.

Behre may have started over L. Collins last year if he had stayed healthy. The kid has talent. SS L. Collins and Behre seem to me to have similar skill sets: good against the run, hard tacklers, etc. Behre will challenge for playing time but L. Collins will likely win the job and play near the LOS more this year.
Because Berhe has shown so much in his time here compared to Collins!
^This. I saw a lot of flashes from LC with some more help this year we should see strong improvement. No one expects him to be All Pro or the next Kan Chancellor. He just needs to improve, same could be said about the other rookie that started nearly every game, Ereck Flowers but no one would consider playing Byron Stingily, Nat Berhe?? give me a break.
I'm still not over Landon blowing the game sealing INT
against the Pats. That said, I think the criticism he's received has been extra harsh. He was a rookie forced into a role that exposed his weaknesses - I think he'll be a lot better with a real FS flanking him out there, and should also be able to step up his own game in year 2
Justin Pugh told me he's at 320 pounds, the most he's ever been. Credited new strength and conditioning coach Aaron Wellman and his program. You can see the difference in Pugh. He looks bigger and more solid

But is his true position strong safety?
Or, given the way the NFL is evolving that position, his best qualities can be shown as a hybrid OLB/S as we see certain teams doing? Buchanon on Arizona is the player I'm thinking of.

How's that Anthony Davis trade coming along tool bag?
Give him a "job" and let him do his job. I think he's superb as a LOS type safety who stuffs the run and keeps catches in front of him short. Back pedaling and playing centerfield is not his game. That will be for D. Thompson, M. Thompson, B. Jackson and maybe N. Behre to do - play centerfield. One of them, likely our rookie, should do well enough to show he can start.
feel like Berhe will do anything productive to help this team, but I just don't see it. Another guy who spends most of his time injured or on twitter and not being a productive player.
a few months ago where Berhe was posting clips on instagram of his special teams tackles and saying things like "the return is almost here..." Dude has to stay on the field.
McAdoo: Getting out of camp healthy is key. #Giants
Given the mess we had last year entering game 1, I'd have to agree health is the key. We also need a fast start, 3-0 over 2 NFC East teams (Dallas and Washington) as well as New Orleans in our house. That would go a long way towards our being confident and winning the division. The defense, if healthy, should only get better as the players mesh after a few games.
Go to MN game 4 healthy and stop RB Peterson. 4-0 would be amazing before we travel on a short week to Green Bay, a very tough game.
but I'd settle for top twenty...even this would be head and shoulders better than last year.
top 20 would be a huge disappointment. After the free agency haul and money spend if this team isn't 15 or better its a huge bust as far as the defensive side is concerned.

Oh, I agree, I'm just saying top ten seems a a bit wishful when there hasn't been a practice yet.
I'm hoping for top ten I just want to see a few practices/games first.
DT Damon Harrison (knee swelling) will begin Giants camp on PUP. He'll be joined by LB JT Thomas (hamstring) and DT Jay Bromley (ankle).
If these guys can't work right away, then this is smart roster management.
However, if these guys can't work in a few weeks, it's going to start to feel like deja vu all over again.
You always worry when you hear "Knee" in a sentence along with PUP, I don't care if it is just swelling. Yikes.
JT Thomas may not even make the team this year.
DT Bromley and bone spurs - he should heal before long I'd think, but how long?
Bottom line: this is still the healthiest I've seen us for the beginning of training camp so I'll take it so long as all recover and practicee within a week or two.

I'm thinking top 5 run defense, top 5 in generating turnovers (gulp) and top 10 - 15 overall yards and points allowed. This is all contingent on our DLine and starting corners staying healthy along with LB Kennard, a stud run defender and blitz guy.

JPP says he's had one procedure on his hand since the end of the season. Says there are no more planned. #Giants
Also, I bet C. Taylor is limited. LOL.

"Having a year under my belt is tremendous....I can react this season 10 times faster." - Landon Collins
Landon Collins' main goal is to improve in man-to-man coverage this season #giants
Collins said Giants D didn't "trust" the system last year and it took them too long to learn it. He doesn't think that'll be a problem now.

LOL...maybe they finally "trusted" the fact that the system was broken?

Just wait until they "really" trust the system. Not sure if it's better not to listen to the player or just hope they learn not to speak

I thought these guys didn't put on pads yet? They are athletes and much younger than me. What gives?
All good for Victor Cruz.
Avoids PUP list + will be on active roster as camp begins as expected and will practice tomorrow. #Giants
