_____________________________________________________________________________________________

At QB, it's simple. Thomas might have a shot at PS. Or might not make it to camp.

RB--I could make an argument for keeping any of the 3 guys I cut. But to me Jennings, Vereen and Perkins are pretty much 95% locked in. And Williams still seems more talented than any of the other 3. So barring injury, I went with the odds. But the comments about Rainey a few weeks back from Sully made me think. And Darkwa looked natural and is big on STs. Coprich will have to produce quickly to get any type of shot.

FB-Johnson as FB/TE/Hback. I would be surprised if Whitlock made the necessary improvements in blocking but not completely shocked. But he doesn't offer us running or receiving.

WR-Another tough cut for the last spot. Assuming Cruz health, the top 4 are locked in. Cruz, OBJ, Shepard and Harris. I think Davis is probably a level or two below. He's probably about 50-60%. Then the 6th spot. I know Mac loves White but I haven't seen anything worth waiting over if there is talent competing. Lewis and Powe (and maybe Maye) have a shot to impress and it sounds like Lewis and Powe both have done some stuff already. So I will go with Lewis for now as hope springs eternal at this time of the year.

TE-another tough last cut. I don't know if it will end up tough after camp. But right now it's hard to cut Donnell or Tye. LaCosse seems to have made a jump. Adams is a draft pick with physical skills. And Malleck has some characteristics you like to hear about and made some noise in OTAs and minicamp. Hard to separate these guys. I am starting with 4. But with 6 WRs, 4 RBs, and a FB, hard to keep 4 TEs also.

OL-But I can keep 4 TEs, 6 WRs, 4 RBs and a FB because right now I am stretching to keep 8 OLs. It's clear we are looking. Not as clear we will find someone. But I can't argue to keep Cleary (based on what I saw), Rodgers, Farrell or Seymour (based on what I haven't seen/heard) or Jones (who maybe has a shot at the PS but who hasn't seemed to make any noise here yet. And so I came down to Gettis v McDermott for the last spot of backup center and guard. I went McDermott. He is a bit bigger and I saw enough of Gettis not to like him much if he had to play. The others are fairly easy. If Stingily is healthy, he is the 7th guy. And the starters plus Hart are the 1st 6.

DE-Only real decision here was keep Wynn or not (I did) and if I keep a young guy (I did) and if so, who. I picked Okwara. Williams can maybe be a PS guy. Not a fan of Rose based on measurable and what little I saw on youtube.

DT-I think we use Wynn and Owa inside at times so I sufficed with 4. I think they want Nix to step up but I almost chose Hughes or Lewis because I don’t know if Nix stays healthy. I guess I really think it will be Hughes if form holds but Nix has the better shot.

LB-no feel here. I cut Herzlich and Sheppard but who the hell knows? Herzlich is also the backup LS so if all else is equal, he wins. But I could see Thomas cut. Even Robinson if he doesn’t stay healthy. Unlikely but possible.

CB-Thought the 1st 5 were clear at this point. Jacobs and McFadden have a shot. Especially McFadden with his pedigree. But we haven’t seen anything so I went with the order they are in to start.

S-I have Berhe as a cut. Truthfully, I don’t think he gets cut if he stays healthy. I am just betting he doesn’t. I could say the same about Jackon or Taylor or Mykelle Thompson too. So call it a hunch. Or a stab in the dark. And probably wrong.

STs-I kept DeOssie over Ott and that is the only decision here.
As good a prediction as any

Injuries are the "unknown factor" right now along with development.

I like OG Seymour over McDermott due to his versatility to play OC in a pinch as well.

I don't see LB JT Thomas making it due to salary, injuriies. I'm liking Sheppard over Herzlich or Thomas. Heck, I wouldn't be overly shocked if Sheppard was the MLB on opening day and Brinkley cut. Anything can happen in camp.

SS N. Behre, he got hurt last year but was durable before that in college and 2014 (rookie campaign). He will not only make the team but challenge for playing time. He hits like a train.
In the above summary, who are the OL CUT.
Big Blue '56 : 7/28/2016 12:35 pm : link
I can deduce from write-up, but summaries are good for quick perusal
People forget this is actually Jackson's third training camp
Mason : 7/28/2016 12:43 pm : link
He has already been cut by the Giants even when there wasn't that much in front of him at CB. They thought hey let's give him a shot at S. If M. Thompson and Behre are healthy. He is on the outside looking in. M. Thompson had a better camp than he last year and has great hands and speed (he also had a better camp than Collins but that's another story). Behre played well his rookie year until his injury.

Yes, they are.
more likely 6 cbs

as opposed to 5 safeties
Factor in special teams and I'd rather have the extra safety.
Klaatu : 7/28/2016 1:02 pm : link
And if he's healthy, a guy like Mykkele Thompson can play CB in a pinch. The Giants had him lining up in the slot, at times, in the spring.

M. Thompson and B. Jackson can both play corner in a pinch as well as special teams.

If we keep five safeties, it will be special teams and upside which will be the final determinant. I like D. Thompson, L. Collins, N. Behre, B. Jackson and M. Thompson to all stick. I think C. Taylor practices and plays well in camp making him a tough cut but I doubt anyone picks him up given his history so he's asked to stay in shape just in case of injuries. We have a youthful group and all have upside if healthy.
Here's where I differ from mort:

I'd keep D. Thompson, M. Thompson, and L. Collins.

But I'm cutting Taylor and keeping Currie, and cutting Jackson and keeping Adams.

don’t see Taylor making the team absent injuries. We’ve already cut him once, and just picked him up at the end of last year to finish out the season. I also think Jackson will end up on the PS. Berhe makes the 53.
I don't see the Giants keeping 4 TEs

that seems excessive
Agreed with the above.

4 TEs would be excessive IMO.

I thought that too but think about it: there is TALENT here and if we risk say TE LaCosse to the PS we risk losing him. He or Mallek may be our best inline blockers and we need someone that can push the pile on 3rd/4th and 1.5 or less. Donnell isn't the answer though Tye does have some potential.

TE: Tye, Donnell, Lacosse, Adams and Johnson (HBack)? I would not be shocked if Donnell ended up being cut due to health and/or the desire to go younger with blocking TE types and Johnson. I doubt that will happen. If Tye shows he can block, I think we risk LaCosse to the practice squad, or maybe Adams if he doesn't show enough??
If M Thompson is playing
ChicagoMarty : 7/28/2016 2:46 pm : link
the slot then I don't see the Jints improving much over their last place pass defense ranking from last year

I think M. Thompson is fast and fluid. I would not be surprised if he competed at nickel CB along with B. Jackson, T. Wade and J. Jenkins. You have to figure Jenkins wins the slot corner role and Apple gets the outside corner role. It is good to have depth at this all important position.

On another note, regarding TE, I wonder if we don't look to trade Donnell and a conditional 6th or 7th to a team for an upgrade at RT? Just a thought...
Nice job mort

Hmmm...interesting, I never considered that FS B. Jackson could still be eligible for the PS since this is his 3rd training camp. But I think you are ineligible after you have been active in like 9 games or something like that. He doesn't meet that criteria. With his coming back from the ACL who knows? PS is a maybe.
.
mort christenson : 7/28/2016 4:17 pm : link
hadn't thought of Jackson as PS eligible. Maybe.

Also, my thinking on Jackson and Mykelle Thompson was they have versatility to play some CB in a pinch. So the 5 CBs has some more depth with them as well.

Lastly, I don't necessarily think we keep 4 TEs and I don't think we keep only 8 OL. I just think that any of the 4 TEs I kept has a better chance of being on this roster than the 9th OL currently on the roster who I didn't keep. That is my thought process when projecting who we keep of the guys we have now. I could have kept Darkwa for the same reason. I don't see him being cut but I don't have the spot to keep him today. But he has a better shot than any of the OLs after the 8 guys I kept.
One objection
BillT : 7/28/2016 4:33 pm : link
I highly doubt they are keeping 4 TE. I think that Donnell will be the odd man out. Tye will beat him out as the starter and his lack of ST will work against him as the 2/3 TE. 3 TE, 9 OL.

No one disagrees
Glover : 7/28/2016 5:18 pm : link
with keeping Williams? I'm not sold his muscles and hard work are going to make him any better. Darkwa showed quickness and ability, I would be pissed if he is cut and Williams is still a Giant. I will be pissed if Williams is still a Giant no matter what. Guy can't run and he drops screen passes. Don't want to see him touch the rock for Big Blue.
mort
BillT : 7/28/2016 6:42 pm : link
Sure mort, that's reasonable. I just think that Donnell has run his course here. He's a one dimentional TE who can catch, can't block, has ball security issues and doesn't play ST. The emergence if Tye who I think will show a good all around game in his second year pushes Donnell down the depth chart where his one dimensional game is too much of a liability. We'll see.

McAdoo gave Williams a vote of confidence in the spring. Now, whether he was serious about it or just blowing smoke remains to be seen, but I think Williams will be on the final 53. My issue with Darkwa is his durability (or lack thereof). He seems to get dinged up way too often, and with Jennings hardly a model of durability himself, I'd be hesitant to keep both on the roster. My guess is that Mort's guess is correct: the Giants keep Jennings, Vereen, Perkins, and Williams.

When push comes to shove, I think it ends up being Jennings, Vereen, Perkins and Williams as well. Rainey and Dwarka last until the final cuts and are asked to stay in shape if they don't land anywhere else.

In truth, I'd love for Dwarka, Williams and Perkins to all shine and show starting ability in camp. On another thread I was talking about how Reese is looking for talent this camp, to fill holes especially at RT, WLB or CB over Wade. Anywhere we could upgrade but RT is the priority.

If we could trade a starting TE like Donnell and RB like Rainey or Dwarka plus a conditional 5, 6, or 7 to a team willing to part with an upgrade RT we'd be in good shape for the season. The likelihood of something like that happening is 1 out 50 I'm sure, but I can dream! It is pre-season practice morning! Woo Hoo!
