NFT: Yankees Thread 07.29 - Trade Deadline Getting Closer

kash94 : 7/29/2016 1:13 pm
-As per Heyman and a bunch of writers, Yankees seem to have issues moving Beltran. Whether this is because of a high price or other reasons, not sure. Beltran could net a draft pick after the offseason if offered arb.

-One reporter saying Nats offered Giolito for Miller straight up....

They should go ahead and play him enough to get to 700 this season...

his 700th homer because they're going to have little else to try to promote to get people in the seats.
I don't think I believe that...
Dunedin81 : 7/29/2016 3:35 pm : link
He has 2 HR since June 3rd, more than 100 ABs. They'd have to trot him out for a long time to guarantee that happened, and in the meantime they'd be playing with a short bench. That's a lot of money for an event that probably costs more in the bonus (I think he gets another $6 mil) than it does in the $ they make from the milestone.
btw, I've been meaning to ask you - was Pulaski worth the trip?
Greg from LI : 7/29/2016 3:37 pm : link
Been thinking about going with dad and my son to a weekend game to see Rutherford before he gets promoted.

Absolutely. It's a pretty part of Virginia anyway, if you can detour to the smokehouse in Galax it's worth the trip. They've done a lot with that ballpark too.

is putting all the eggs in a single basket. Trading a top closer for a top pitching prospect to me really isn't. Yes he's fragile, but if his arm falls off you're out a closer. You can sign one in the offseason. Downgrade, sure, but still a solid closer, especially if Melancon gets moved (no QO). If Sale's arm falls off, you're out a farm system.
The team has worked too hard on upgrading their pipeline. I don't see them giving up that many top prospect for Sales as there are too many holes right now and too few long term solutions.

I know it makes sense, long-term, if they get a great offer, but it had better be AMAZING, because they're tough to watch even with him (being last in OPS in the AL).

Beltran really wouldn't be a bad guy to have around if they're breaking in a bunch of young guys, so, worst-case, they extend QO and he takes it, they'd pay ARod to play golf... MLB Team Stats - 2016 - ( New Window )

They're unwatchable NOW. Trading him would not make any difference.
I would rather watch

They've got a shot at a comp pick if he stays...

and he's the biggest bat in the lineup, which means he's good for asses in the seats. And frankly they're not really in line for a Top 10 pick, so the difference between being almost competitive and being mediocre but not bad is probably worth a few million bucks to them with little real downside. They want a real return and if they don't get it they're perfectly justified in hanging onto him.
If they traded Beltran for a major league ready young prospect
djm : 7/29/2016 8:00 pm : link
They'd be more watchable in my view.

Version of Tex .I think the Yankees realize this and are trying to get anything they can for him.
I disagree
Stu11 : 7/30/2016 3:07 pm : link
He is not Tex at all. Tex has been brittle for years. McCann is a clutch hitter who even will actually go the other way occasionally to beat the shift. I'm not dead set against dealing him but "needing him off this team" is a little ridiculous.

Just gotta hope they get something for Beltran and Nova at least.

I know a lot will disagree with me. However, I rather have Romine in there over MCCann. I have more faith when we need a sacrifice fly Romne will get it done. For what they are paying MCCann he is not worth it. McCann these days seems to be a high risk reward hitter. He will either hit the homerun or pop up to the infield when all you need is a sacrifice fly as the Yankees needed last Saturday. Bases loaded and swings at the first pitch and meekly flys out.Cervelli has better numbers than him.

Idk, the Nats have two dynamite starters and a lineup that could catch fire. I would take the Cubs but it wouldn't be that big an upset.
The Nats have a nice team

You'd get a better grip on his value if you compared him to other MLB catchers. Simply put he's one of the best. He's helped hold this shaky Yankee pitching staff together since he signed here 3 years ago. And he hits. Even if he hits like shit for his standards he's got more pop than most catchers. Don't compare McCann to a 2000 version of mike piazza.

Don't think this means much considering he has a full no trade clause. Only way it means something is if a deal is already worked out and he's agreeable to it. I wonder if he does want to go back to Atlanta. But I can't see them offering that much.

Certainly a possibility. Hal needs to okay eating $. If he wants to get under $189 he could be creative with how he eats it. Eat everything this year, eat nothing next year and a lot of 2018, they could figure it out.

Why the hell do fans base their opinions on production on what a player makes? It makes no sense. That's for the team to care about, not the fans. The only thing we should be comparing is McCanns productivity against the other catchers in the league. And he's upper echelon. Who gives a rats ass what he makes? If there was a salary cap, MAYBE I could see why fans would care, but there is not in baseball.

mitch300 : 7/30/2016 7:27 pm : link
Your right. However, Hal is very much care about the dollar. He's not like his dad. That 189 was a goal for him to do. He never did though.
Don't even get me started on bringing salary into this debate
djm : 7/30/2016 7:35 pm : link
I fucking hate today's sports narrative with player salaries. Salary talk has completely corrupted pro sports talk. It's ruined the game for many even if they don't know it. I get that the salary cap has made it so player salaries are relevant if not crucial but when you talk sports with a fan and everything centers on how much tucking money is being paid? That's sad.

Pro sports should be an escape. If I want to worry about money I'll ask my wife how the bank account looks these days.

I wish they'd apply some kind of hippa law to pro salaries. We'd all be better off.

And no I'm not disappointed in McCann. Could he do better of course but he's a damn good catcher.
Shock, I disagree only to the extent that salaries like we pay to
yatqb : 7/30/2016 7:49 pm : link
McCann, Ellsbury and the other high-priced players on the roster increase our overall payroll and likely make Hal more conservative in other areas.

And with our incredible 4 hits tonight, I'm SO ready to dump as many of the older guys as we can, particularly guys at positions where there are players waiting in the wings, as Sanchez is with McCann.
And against an ace like Smyly, no less.

It's not one guy, it's the entire payroll. Did we go for Moncada? Nope. Did we go all in on INT FAs at that time? Nope (although we finally did two years ago). Did we try to get below $189M? So yeah, seriously...of course he AND the other big ticket players influence what we spend in other areas.

who was subsequently removed from any role in baseball decisions (and eventually divorced). Like it or not they adhered to the relative gentleman's agreement to keep spending within the range of the reasonable - IMO, it was done to forestall harsher restrictions that came anyway. But the last few years have lacked a strategic vision of any sort. Gotta let the baseball people do their thing and accept that the end result in the long run will be more money in their pockets.
