Eye Opening Piece About Kelvin Sheppard by Pat Leonard

gidiefor : Mod : 8/5/2016 9:11 am
Could he be the Giants New MLB?
For Kelvin Sheppard, Giants linebacker job is Taylor-made - ( New Window )
One thing I will say about Kelvin
Moondawg : 8/5/2016 9:15 am : link
is that he brings the heat.
To say it otherwise,
Moondawg : 8/5/2016 9:15 am : link
he's no absolute zero.
What's eye-opening about it?
Klaatu : 8/5/2016 9:21 am : link
I don't know much about Sheppard, but as I recall, no one in Miami was shedding any tears when he wasn't re-signed.
this is why I believe
area junc : 8/5/2016 9:39 am : link
we're a "year away" from having a #1 D

Like a rug that ties a room together, The Defense needs a 3-down MLB to pull it all together and make the scheme go.

We'll be good this year, but one more strong offseason where we get a MLB and some DLine depth.....look out
2011
pjcas18 : 8/5/2016 9:48 am : link
didn't have a 3 down MIKE.

they used Deon Grant so much because they didn't have a 3-down MIKE.

that worked out Ok. I don't even know how many 3-down MIKEs there are in the league.

Chase Blackburn started at MIKE in the Super Bowl.

Maybe one of the plethora of safeties sticks temporarily in this capacity until they at least try and get a 3-down MIKE, but I think they're rare.
I don't get it either.....
Doomster : 8/5/2016 10:15 am : link
Talk is one thing, going out there and doing it is another....these linebackers the Giants have, have done nothing to distinguish themselves.....Sheppard had a lot of tackles? Jacquian Williams had a lot of tackles, all downfield....

The front office has picked from the bottom of the barrel to fill these positions....mainly castoffs of other teams.....we have drafted linebackers that have not panned out......Sintim, Dillard, Tracy, JW, Jones, and Kennard....Kennard is the only one left....Kennard has potential, but can't stay on the field....

The one plus for these linebackers, is not from them....it's from the DL....if the DL can create pressure, it makes their job easier......if we can get average play from these guys, then it would be a "plus"....
I don't get the bile here
gidiefor : Mod : 8/5/2016 10:32 am : link
If this guy steps up and performs - you all gonna turn his services down?
No bile
pjcas18 : 8/5/2016 10:37 am : link
only skepticism, not sure why people get offended from people being skeptical.

Fourth team in six years and he met L.T.

Pretty exciting if you ask me

gidie, it's not bile. I just find it hard to get excited about a player of Sheppard's caliber (and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in that).

Could he win the starting MIKE job? I suppose so, but let's face it...his competition is hardly awe-inspiring.

If he steps up and performs I'll be first in line to sing his praises, but I'd like to see him do it first before I tune up my vocal chords.
My money remains on Robinson to wih the spot at Mike
UberAlias : 8/5/2016 10:50 am : link
Here is what Pat T had to say in yesterday's notes: "Middle linebacker Keenan Robinson showed nice explosiveness when he burst through a gap and into the backfield. If that had been a live drill, he would have had a sack. … Kelvin Sheppard, another middle linebacker candidate, doesn’t look quite as quick to react in space. It’s almost as though he’s still feeling his way around this defense."
I'm hoping Goodson is starting at MLB by mid-season
RobCarpenter : 8/5/2016 11:05 am : link
He's probably the most talented MLB on the roster but since he's a rookie I doubt he starts out of the gate.

I think the Giants would like Robinson to secure the starting MIKE job, too, and he would most likely stay on the field in sub-packages, too.
I thought Goodson

is our MLB savior and we're ready to go NOW(??) But then we haven't heard a peep about him from camp.

This is not true. I've read a few positive things.
I will keep re-iterating this....
BC Eagles94 : 8/5/2016 11:45 am : link
and hopefully some people who know nothing but what they read on this site...will start to absorb this. But the guy had 10.5 stuffs (non-sack tackles for a loss) last year. I went back and found that we have one previous player to break double digit stuffs in the past 15-20 years (forget exact # now)...Mathias Kiwanuka in 2011 with 11. Now I am not saying the guy is a stud, he did sign only a one year deal for 800k. But he is much better than a lot of the posters on this site, who don't know a thing about him but just say he stinks because other posters do, say he is. He is a legit option at starting Mike for us this year.
Just looked it up again...
BC Eagles94 : 8/5/2016 11:49 am : link
Kiwi in 2011, Mike Barrow in 2003, and Armstead in 1999. Those are the only three Giants in past 20 years to have double digit stuffs.

Ridiculous post. Only the most "homerish" of posters were anointing him an immediate starter, let alone a savior. Most realized that he would take some time to develop, and I and others used Jon Goff's career path for a comparison.
It would be a great sign if Goodson won the job at some point
Reale01 : 8/5/2016 1:02 pm : link
We know what the others are: Average or maybe slightly above in Robinsons case.

Ha that's is a lot of MIKE's. I didn't realize how many times I said MIKE. I probably didn't need to say MIKE so many times.

MIKE MIKE MIKE MIKE
So we have a Shepard on offense...
manh george : 8/5/2016 1:24 pm : link
and a Sheppard on defense?

Keep the flocks in line.

Maybe Anthony Davis can learn to play MLB?
Snacks is going to make every linebacker better.

That was an intelligent play. He knew where to go. How often does a MLB make an int that far down field?

Remember when George Young issues those intelligence tests? Dumb players will lose you games said Bill Parcells.
Chase also made an outstanding play in overage in the NFCC game...
Dan in the Springs : 8/5/2016 10:03 pm : link
covering Vernon Davis - who was deadly that offseason. Chase had him in man coverage and was able to keep up enough to knock away a pass that otherwise would have kept a drive alive. Who knows if we make the SB without that play?

Chase was a great part of that 2011 team.
Sheppard is a likely upgrade from Brinkley...
Torrag : 8/5/2016 10:33 pm : link
...albeit a minor one.

He's active and physical. I haven't seen enough of him yet to form an opinion on how he 'calls a game' from the MIKE position.

Until Goodson is ready we have to hope we can function at a high level as a defense with him on the field.

I believe that opening day we may see WLB J. Casillas, MLB Brinkely and SLB D. Kennard all starting on the first snap BUT we'll see MLB K. Robinson work his way into the MLB role by the bye week, if not sooner. It does take time to master a new defense and Brinkley has the advantage. MLB Robinson will come in on pure passing downs as a nickel LB type.

I think MLB Goodson is likely a year away from starting, just because he's a rookie and has to learn. If he gets a start late in the year due to injury or something so be it. But I'd prefer the ultra quick Robinson out there all 3 downs once he has the scheme clearly down.

Now, another option could be to simply have MLB K. Robinson out there from game 1 knowing he can cover AND is protected by superb run stopping DT's. He can learn on the job.

WLB: Casillas, Sheppard
MLB: Robinson, Brinkley, Goodson
SLB: Kennard, Herzlich (ST's, Lockerroom, Knowledge of D)

Sheppard likely makes this team as a backup WLB, MLB and SLB.

Interesting stat, thanks.

Both guys (Brinkley and Sheppard) are guys I wanted in their respective drafts, or at least guys I thought Reese should have interest in.

Haven't followed either since their draft years, but it seems they have had similar careers. Both 2 down thumper Mikes, have started about the same # of games in their careers (but Sheppard out of 5 years, Brinkley out of 7...)

If Goodson is the goods, both these guys are basically place holders for Goodson until 2017 or 2018.

I'd like to see Robinson win the starting WIL position because I think Casillas is undersized, really, as is Thomas, and Robinson has the most natural ability among those 3, and is bigger while still possessing enough athleticism for the WIL role.
