What are your thoughts on Tavarres King?

Klaatu : 8/8/2016 2:35 pm
Honestly, this guy's a real puzzle to me. Decent, not great production in college, good measurables, 5th Round pick of the Broncos in 2013 but didn't make the team, now on his fifth team in four years (PS for us last year). Two career catches, both with the Bucs in 2014.

Pretty underwhelming. Still, he's having a very good summer so far, making the most of his opportunities. I'm anxious to see what he does in the preseason games. I'm not ready to anoint him yet, but the guy does intrigue me.
The camp reports are positive so far
SGMen : 8/8/2016 2:38 pm : link
But like you I want to see how he fares in pre-season games. I honestly didn't even know he was on our practice squad last year. He has an advantage in experience in the offense and the NFL over UDFA's like Powe, Lewis, Dable and Maye.

In my eyes, based on camp reports, he's ahead of WR Myles White.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

King, Lewis, Powe is really great to see. Nobody is sneaking on to the roster by default. Whoever wins the last WR spot or 2 is going to have to earn it.

but as of August 8th, what exactly constitutes a good summer?
Sy'56 was high on him when he came out in the draft

a few years back.

It seems like it might be a difficult move to make, keeping a 26 year old King over 22 year old Lewis or Powe.

The preseason games will tell us alot more about this.

Does anyone know if he has any role on specials?

You might want to check the practice reports.

I think he either forces you take him on the 53, or you go with potential of the younger guys.

sounds like he's making the most of his opportunities. Hopefully he continues the strong play once the games start.

Good question about special teams. I honestly don't know from the reports.

He is so far the #1 "kid on the block" in terms of early production in camp. But he has the advantage of experience in the NFL and experience in this offense. Year #4 for him, maybe he had an "awakening" of sorts. We can only hope cause he appears fast and can stretch the field.

^This. Probably only one of those three makes the team, but until recently, King wasn't even in the conversation. The two who don't will probably be on the PS.
From the sounds of it ...
Beer Man : 8/8/2016 3:09 pm : link
So far the young receivers are all making it difficult for the coaches to pick who stays, who goes to the PS, and who is cut. Its good to see them all doing well. This battle should be exciting to watch over the next four weeks.
Out of the lower round or UDFA hopefuls
Coach Mason : 8/8/2016 3:21 pm : link
Lewis,Davis, and King are shining the most with a big drop off to White, Powe and then Maye and Dable who you hear very little about.

Preseason will bear this out further, but with MacAdoos decree about keeping the best 53 I really think 2 and possibly all 3 of Lewis,Davis and King make the team. With the way King has bounced around though, I want to see if he can still put on a show in a preseason game.

That's the point, it's practice..Many HOF practice players

shouldn't King with his NFL training camp experience be doing well when compared to rookies and 2nd year players. When comparing King versus the others, you are going to have to consider has King reached his ceiling and is his play dramatically better than the others who may have not reached the ceiling yet.
Is he this years version Washington or Soup Harris?
Simms11 : 8/8/2016 3:50 pm : link
He's shown nice flashes in camp so far, perhaps he just needed time to improve his skills and technique. I hope he's an ascending player that maybe can fill out the bottom of our WR depth chart. One position that seems fairly solid this year, much competition. Can't wait to see these guys in Pre-Season.
I honestly didn't know anything about him....
Crispino : 8/8/2016 3:57 pm : link
but as I wrote in my camp observations last week, he jumped out at me watching practice. Smooth, good size and hands. He was consistently getting separation and making catches. Small sample, but I liked what I saw. He stood out.
Powe or Lewis may be sneaked on the practice squad or IR.
Ivan15 : 8/8/2016 4:06 pm : link
Minimum preseason game time so there is no film on him. Final cut so no one else can take a look at him.

Davis is a keeper unless he screws up in preseason games or can't play specials. King needs to keep catching the ball and not make rookie mistakes.
Is King still eligible for the practice squad?
Big Blue Blogger : 8/8/2016 4:08 pm : link
He might have used up his three years of eligibility, though it's possible that he was on the PS for a total of less than six weeks in one of those seasons. In 2013, the Broncos signed him to the active roster to keep the Packers from signing him off the PS, then he was later waived and claimed by Carolina. So maybe all that movement kept him under the new six-week trigger?

Anyway, he should be well ahead of the rookie UDFAs who comprise most of his competition, so he has a legitimate shot at making the roster and even dressing on game day. Otherwise, this could be the end of his winding NFL road.

I just hope he isn't Preston Parker II: a journeyman with a nice story and questionable hands who earns his big shot and blows it, costing the Giants a game or two in the process.

Ramses Barden.
Remember if he is the 6th WR
BillT : 8/8/2016 4:12 pm : link
Most weeks he won't be on the 45(6?)-man game day roster. Not that that matters in terms of who that put on the team but it's not likely we'll see that much of him during the season. His age/experience might work in his favor if they think the other guys could use some more development.
I like him because he has a CHANCE.
Marty in Albany : 8/8/2016 4:20 pm : link
He does not have any obvious weaknesses that we have seen in other WRs.

He's not too short like K J Maye, or some of the other small WRs the Giants drafted in prior years. You know the names. You remember the disappointments.

He's not too slow. He seems fast enough.

He is not awkward. He does not fight the ball. He can catch it in stride w/o falling down. He looks graceful even running at full tilt.

He is not too weak. He is tall enough and strong enough to fight for the ball and take some punishment doing it. It will be tougher for a CB to deflect him at the LOS than a smaller WR.

He is not too dumb. He appears to understand the route tree.

King does not have to overcome a weakness. He just needs to use his talents at an NFL level, if he can.

As of now, King has a chance, as does Lewis, as does Powe. I am optimistic that one, or all, of them can play in the NFL.
The King of the North!

NFC North that is.
Pleasant surprise so far

Looking forward to see how these receiver do in pre-season.
He has a lot of competition for a WR spot on the 53.
He is 26 years old
Steve in South Jersey : 8/8/2016 6:19 pm : link
he is going to be a lot better than the rookie WR competition.
Boylhart loved him in the draft, too

Tavarres is one of the most underrated wide receivers in this draft. He is quick and fast and has good size. He shows on film excellent hands to catch the ball and the athleticism to adjust to the ball in the air and make the tough catch in traffic. Tavarres has excellent lateral agility and is a very fluid athlete. He runs with a strong gait and, at the same time uses his quick feet to change gears and direction on a dime. He runs all the routes on the route tree and runs them better than a lot of receivers playing in the NFL now. He can line up on the inside or the outside and works well with his quarterback when plays break down. Tavarres is one of the smartest receivers in this draft. He understands how to set up defensive backs for the long ball and will catch the ball over the middle without any qualms. He has the quickness in and out of his routes to be a weapon inside the red zone as well as weapon in the middle of the field.
It definitely makes you wonder how it is that he's been around so long without landing on a 53 man roster.

Kid can play
JohnF : 8/8/2016 7:02 pm : link
I was very impressed seeing him at camp. He makes plays.

And it's not the one "sky hook" play like Ramses. This guy gets off the line of scrimmage effortlessly, and runs REALLY sharp routes. He gets open, and has really good hands. I wasn't kidding when I said he reminded me of Cruz's first camp.

And yes, I know it was against 2nd-3rd string. I'm not going to crown him yet, but I do want to see a lot of him in pre-season. This is the kind of guy that would be great moving the chains and in the red zone, if he keeps it up.
i'd bench OBJ in the preseason
grizz299 : 8/8/2016 7:08 pm : link

get to see more of these kids and spare OBJ and if that means he's not quite as sharp for the opener...I'd live with it.
Fact is, he's so good I don't think he needs pre-season contact and I'd really like to see these kids who seem to have so much potential. A win / win ??

Well, that's what they do in the summer - practice - and while they've been practicing, King has looked good, made plays, made the most of his opportunities.

What did you think I meant by a good summer, beach parties and shrimp on the barbie? Sheesh.
