Fan behavior at MetLife stadium

EJJ : 8/13/2016 8:59 am
It seems the new theme of going to a live game is stuffing your face with the concessions not watching the game LOL.
I know it's only preseason but in the old days you would sit, cheer and watch the game not stand in front of people while trying to watch a play. Now it seems like people are totally oblivious to what's going on and only concerned with going up and down the aisle and stuffing their faces. People were standing in front of you while the play was going on taking selfies for Christ's sake! The stadium was also extremely quiet but then again it was very hot and a stormy night.
I was at one real game at Metlife in OBJ's rookie year

it was a good feel, and people around us were inveseted in the game and cool. It was the Skins game.

The world is about looking down(cell, phones, etc)..The stadia are unnecessarily loud, but not the good kind of loud. The Music blaring loud between plays, The active PA announcers....Just awful..

As I've said often (and no, the old days are not automatically better), when we had the season tickets for decades, you built a relationship with fans around you and the only music was the half time band..

I love watching at home
56--I get it. the home viewing experience is so good nowadays
Moondawg : 8/13/2016 9:10 am : link
and tickets cost so much, where one drunk asshole at the stadium can ruin your entire experience.

That said, there's nothing like the feeling of the stadium cheering in unison for a great play.
Went to the game too.

I thought the crowd was good early despite the delay but as the Giants play on the field deteriorated the fan interest waned. The weather and it being a preseason game were also huge factors. Regardless I had a blast being able to take my youngest son to his first Giants game even if it was only preseason

All joking aside, I think it's a function of a preseason game.

depends on the game. place was rocking and engaged last year for a few. Patriots in particular.
Did you notice on air when Papa
SwirlingEddie : 8/13/2016 9:31 am : link
did the spot about purchasing tickets to enjoy the excitement of Giants football in person, the cameras showed three or four shots of fans in the stands and they all looked totally disinterested! They were either eating, checking their phones or just looking generally bored by the experience, even the kids. Not a great advertisement for MetLife tickets!

Yeah let's just say the preseason demographic is different than the regular season attendance.
Its pre-season
NJGiantFan84 : 8/13/2016 11:02 am : link
And a completely different feel. Some of those things get done during the regular season games during breaks, but a majority of fans are very interested.

I watch every second of every pre-season game. Sometimes multiple times. When I go live I dont typically stand and cheer. pre-season is about watching individuals. I dont care about the results once the first teamers leave. I go to see how individual players perform. Sure Ill cheer after a big play. But I am not nearly as invested as I am at actual games.
Incidentally...

A week and a half ago I went to MetLife to watch Real Madrid v. Bayern Munich. I have NEVER heard Metlife as loud, and I've been to playoff games there.

Today's experience at the game is still similar to the good old days. I've forged relationships in my new section at the new digs. It's not 1989 jimmy Hoffa days but it's still pretty great.

My favorite aquaintences in my section are drunk John and an older gentelman that always goes out of his way to crawl back two rows to say hello to us. I think he knows me more than I know him. Lol.

It was so freaking hot and humid last night it was hard for people to get into a preseason game. I'm a season subscriber and i love it. There is nothing like watching a football game live.

That's the difference between "football" fans and football fans.

I don't know how they even find 70k to fill it routinely.

It's 10x more enjoyable watching from home with the TV product as good at is. Also, the new stadium is just awful. I've yet to meet a person who prefers it to the old stadium.

Have had season tickets for years and probably no longer. I also agree w '56. We knew the guys next to us. Would see them 8x a year. Now it's just new people every time (and we're just as much to blame, we give our tickets away all the time).

You hit on what I was thinking. Was there AC at the concessions? If so, I'd have spent some time there last night. And I don't bring a smart phone with me to the stands.
I have sold my pre-season tickets
EricJ : 8/13/2016 12:02 pm : link
every year for the past 10 seasons at least. So it has been a while since I have been to a pre-season game. No idea who is buying the tickets or whether they are eating, texting, etc

The game just is not that exciting when you are watching backups.
It's a glorified scrimmage

& a lot of big names (Eli, Odell, Cruz) weren't even playing. I wouldn't get on the fans too much.

Personally, I'd rather watch a football game at home or a bar than in person.

At home, not at a bar. You often cannot hear WTF is going on with the noise in a bar. Prefer to watch at home then go to a bar to watch the other games.

I'd go to a Super Bowl, maybe a home playoff game (unlikely though on the playoff game), but otherwise I have zero need for the stadium any more.

I used to use my rent money on tickets when I was younger, now you couldn't give me free tickets and get me to go.

the drunks, the fights, the traffic, the lines, the home viewing experience being so great, remove any incentive

I agree there is nothing comparable to actually being in the stadium when the team is rolling and the crowd is into it and a great play happens and you get to experience, but it's no longer worth it. to me.

Its a totally different feel than the regular season. But it was the 1st game i brought my kids too, it helped that i'm good with the people next to me and got their tickets for free. They had a good time, even with the hr delay yhey were fine, up until right before the 1/2. If you went to the guest services booth they gave you a certificate with their names on it saying it was thier 1st giants game. Didnt even mind blowing the entire 4th qtr budget on ice cream, pretzels and chicken fingers. Though for $12, those 4 tenders and fries is the best deal in the staduim.

I am going to be splitting the year between NJ and FL. When that happens, I may consider selling my PSL's and will use the $$ to buy a boat.

Sounds like you are retiring? If so congrats!

Have other season ticket holders been able to recoup their initial buy in when selling off their PSLs? I'd guess their are no profits but I could be wrong.

Not retiring YET, but I can work anywhere. I am in the mode where I want to begin pulling back on the intensity and stress. My NJ residence is paid off, my last kid has 2 more years of college....so the wife and I are looking.

Regarding your comment on the sale of PSL's. I would say most seats are not a profit center. Ticket agents would buy mine fairly quickly I think due to the location. The value also has a lot to do with how well the team has been playing. Like anything else it is a supply/demand thing.

Yes and no. For a big game, I think I would still go (if I could afford the ticket, which I probably can't). But, I don't enjoy Yankee games or Giants games very much live anymore because of the stadium. I think both did a terrible job. In general, I think the new stadiums are built for fringe fans and corporate/uber wealthy. It is about suites, food, and noise/video that is just distraction. I don't sit there on my phone, but just the stuff in the stadium itself is distracting enough. I am there to 100% watch the game and I catch myself missing a pitch or a play because I got caught up in the video screen, etc. Then I think the majority of the seats have worse views than their comparable counterparts in the old stadiums.
I went to very nearly every game played at the old ....

I would agree that for most seats in the stadium it may be difficult. However, I am in a unique situation. I am right behind the visitor's bench and in my opinion for resale this spot may be the best in the stadium. Face value for regular season games is $180. The same seats on the Giants side cost at least $700 (and you get that old country buffet food. who cares?).

These seats/PSLs are attractive to ticket brokers. For division games and other teams with a following like the Packers, Raiders, etc my tix sell for $1000 each minimum. For non division games usually anywhere from $500-$750 each. Pre-season I am getting AT LEAST face value and usually about $100 more per pair per game with the parking pass include. Fans of the opposing teams want to buy these games so they can sit next to their team and chat with the players.

Each season I sell both pre-season games and then two regular season games and I end up going to the other 6 games for free. In many instances I know that ticket brokers are buying my seats for those prices and potentially re-selling them.

So, I am sure that for me (unusual circumstances) I can sell these PSLs not only for what I paid but also for a profit to ticket brokers. If they sold every game for as much as they could that would be a great investment for them. They would make at least a 10%-15% return EACH YEAR on the cost of the PSLs and still have that asset to sell again if they wanted.
I'm in the BB56 camp as well.
Bubba : 8/14/2016 7:55 am : link
I sold my PSLs this season after tkts being in the family since 1958. Back in the day tkts were almost impossible to get. Now that they are readily available through multiple sources I did not see the need to hold onto my season tkts. I enjoy watching with my wide screen and surround sound as much as being there.
