Ok – so Marty and I were at the game straddled on midfield with an awesome look at the action. I’m going to give you my observations of the night kind of in order of observation. Here's a shout out to Lippy who we hooked up with just before the game too.
In the first half I focused my view (literally through a set of binoculars) on the right tackle battle on offense and the starting Defensive line and then just Owa Odighizuwa, towards the end of the first half, and into the second half I was looking at the linebackers and how Nassib was playing - it really got ugly into the 4th quarter after Thomas came in – and we left midway through the quarter – and gang that’s saying something because Marty and I have never left a game early untill this game.
Defense
The combo of JPP, Snacks at the 1 tech, Hankins at the 3 Tech, and Olivier Vernon is as advertised folks. They have an impact on the Offense with just 4 guys on the field:
Vernon is fast around that corner. He is not Lawrence Taylor – but he is Lawrence Taylor fast, and he is strong and has a rage. When he go to Tannehill – Tannehill felt it – he was pounded into the turf like a rag doll. JPP was active but Vernon was more like a laser.
Snacks at the 1 Technique is very effective – he gets good push and holds a point of attack well, Hankins had his man wrapped well each down, but does not have a push like Snacks -- Interestingly on third down in the two sets -- first Hankins took the one – and Owa replaced Snacks to penetrate the interior, and then in the second set Snacks and Hankins Switched roles (Hankins at the one and Snacks at the three) - That combo was deadly combo – Snacks ate up the Guard and nearly got to Tannehill – he hurried the play. It was awesome!!!!
Snacks and Vernon – if they play like this all season – they are worth every penny they were paid.
Owa – was a mixed bag in my view. He wrapped up the Left Tackle on most plays kind of to a draw – but on several plays later on in the game he was able to make some moves and get through. He looked good though. He looked strong and he played strong – he was obviously receiving coaching throughout the game – because his play progressed as the game went on – and of course he started playing the second and then third team.
At linebacker I was particularly impressed with Brinkley, Sheppard, Hertz, and Castillas last night with honorable mention to Goodson.
Brinkley and Sheppard were, in separate appearances, very active pre-snap: Barking out and pushing players into position. I really liked that. The both set the defense to make plays, and made a definite diffence.
Hertz and Castillas were also very active last night – and Castillas had impact in the passing game. Hertz is a hard hitter and shook a few defenders up with hard hitting play and they both were around the ball and showed a nose for it.
Goodson is a Giant!!!! He also was very active and had impact – but his play was noticeably uneven, and then all of a sudden he was pulled out.
After the first team left, third down play, however, rapidly broke down as the game wore on – it was reminiscent of last year. Third and nine. No problem, Third and twenty five. No problem – First down! I really wasn’t watching the secondary last night – so I’ll let Marty take that cause he had plenty to say about Apple (mostly good) and Deayon (mostly bad).
Offense
On offense I focused on Right Tackle. The contest between Newhouse and Hart was a good one. Some of you all are not going to like what I saw though:
Newhouse had some very good, very strong play. On the touchdown run, Newhouse made the key block, pulling to the inside and taking on a charging Defensive player to bust open the run and the field ahead was wide open after that. Other than that, in what was mostly a vanilla offense and defense he mostly held his own, wrapping up the man opposite him. There was one play were the end tried to rush around him and Newhouse locked him up with his hands inside and twisted the End around nearly ripping his shirt off and shaking him like a hound shaking a ground hog. The problem was you didn’t get that from him on every play – he either whiffed or seemingly lost focused (interest?) on at least two plays. One resulted in Fede having a straight line at Nassib. It’s possible this was because it was a hot night and pre-season – but it was two different Newhouses there – one who was making good plays – then on those two plays one who was somewhere else – and I say –not because he was taking another assignment – he was on an island with the player opposite him on both plays.
Hart was very energetic and on the field for a much longer timeframe. In fact I noted to Marty that Hart ripped a hole in his pants on this upper right thigh Like Newhouse, he played against Fede a lot and he wrapped him up each time he came against him. In fact Hart didn’t miss a single rep. There were no whiffs, He wrapped up each time on each play he made. But all of his reps were man on man – there was no pulling out of Hart like the Newhouse touchdown block. He did not show the power that Newhouse displayed on the coon hound play I describe above. What he did show was good anticipation. He backed up and got in position on a number of plays, set his hands and feet and wrapped his man up.
I was really interesting to see the interplay between Solari and the Offensive line on the sidelines. The entire Offensive line corps was wrapped around Solari after they came off the field, and Solari spent a lot of time with Hart in particular. But Solari was talking to all who were on the field when they came in showing them the ipad and making comments to them individually. McDermott was at Solari’s right elbow through most of the first half soaking it all in.
I don’t have to say a lot about Nassib that already hasn’t been said. I will say this – anyone who thinks Nassib is worth a draft pick right now is off his gourd. Yes this was preseason, and yes he is healthy coming out of the game, but Nassib made a lot of bad decisions. He made them repeatedly. He did not look good at all. The throws he made to the outside into coverage were just awful. Marty and I looked at each other and shook our heads – imo they were throws that should have not have been made – Nassib said he should have gotten the ball in front of the receiver on these throws after the game – to me that is really not the case – he threw directly into a well-covered receiver at least twice on sideline plays. There was no play to be made there. That he kept repeating this was discomforting.
That’s what I got.
Thanks for the review. You see, NOW, I start paying attention..😜
That made me happy. Haven't seen that in a while.
OK Mason,
I'm reporting what I saw. If you think it was BS -- fine -- I was sure based on comments that were written here - that at least a few of you would be put off by any positive comments on Newhouse -- I saw it though -- It's easy to criticize someone when they whiff -- and he did - twice that I saw. But not on the other plays.

Newhouse absolutely stunk last night. Both he and Hart had snaps against Branch and it was night and day. Newhouse had trouble sealing him off. Even Papa and Banks pointed it out how much trouble he was having controlling and getting a push. Nassib felt immediate pressure from his right side and the RBs weren't able to run to their right.

Sorry gidie for using BS. Just pissed off by this situation but I'm tired of the excuses for Newhouse. He has trouble Keeping LDEs away from his QBs.
What did really surprise me was our QB play. What has this guy been doing for the last 4 years? He was as bad as could be. I really can't find words to express my frustration. I'd really like to hear his explanation for why is was such crap and what is he going to do to improve his play and decisions. Another outing like this and he will need to be cut. That's as bad as I have watched.
Well Mr QB how do you explain such a shit show?
I would have though that Nassib would have thrown the ball away, as Brady or Eli would have done, when his pass protection started to break down. Instead, he tried to run with the ball. Really poor judgment.
I was hoping to see some plays from our TEs and our DBs who had been injured in prior years. Tye made a nice catch and run, but I did not see much from the other TEs or DBs.
CB Donte Deayon made a nice open field solo tackle, but he may be a little too short to cover the taller WRs.
Maybe I was looking at the wrong time, but I thought that CB Trevin Wade looked terrible. At one point he was giving his man a 12 yd cushion. (Miami was giving our WRs three yds pretty consistently.)
I got home at 2:00 AM and am still groggy. Gidie got us great seats. If I had an extra $25,000 I would get a season ticket for that seat.
Apple in the locker room and ... Shepard made me a little nervous.
Watching the game replay on the NFL channel right now.
"That's the third turnover by Nassib in the 2nd quarter" wth?
Give him a couple years in this system (under McAdoo) and he will be alright

Hey Marty -- glad you got home okay -- I'm groggy and got home just before 1pm - much to the dog's chagrin I didn't get up til nearly 9am - I was sure I missed a few things above in my memory banks
Really surprised we are having this discussion over and over again for a reach and stoogey pick
What section and row were you in?
Besides Hart who is still a bit Raw we have Zero IMO
on the Bench ....
I don't hate the guy but he was brought in because of
Injury Issues .
I still wouldn't have minded a guy like Penn who could have
given Flowers more time to develop IMO ..
Nassib just left me scratching my head I guess any QB can
have a night like that and he will get his chance to
redeem himself .

Penn cancelled his flight to see us to re-sign with Oakland. That was his preference all along apparently. Would have loved him here
What section and row were you in?
Eric we were in section 215 row 12
