but how many squats did he do?
What's so weird about this...

is that his physique didn't look bad last year. IIRC there were some articles written about his workout regimen then too. He didn't seem to have any burst last year though, not like what I saw on Friday.
I'm a fan of his and I'm rooting for his success
ATL_Giants : 8/17/2016 10:21 am : link
I heard him give a radio interview here in ATL before he was drafted and he sounds like a terrific kid. I don't know what his reputation is today, but the only negatives I've ever heard are about field production, which are justified.
I'd love him to stick with the team.
Big fan of the push up workout.

that's not really his skill set. it sounds like he's working on being more patient, becoming a better lateral runner and waiting for the holes to open, so I will keep an open mind even though last year he was brutal.
He needs better vision

When I was young I never benched but just did 300 push-ups three times a week, so about 1000 per week. I had great definition but not enough thickness

Of course the advantage of push-up is you can do them anywhere.

This certainly seemed to be the case, a plodding straight-ahead runner with blinders, and the ypc figures seemed to bear that out. I did not see him in action at BC to know what he did differently in college, if anything.

But BBI loves to adopt scapegoats and whipping boys, and AW was that here. He did not perform well, true, as above, but the Giants did not exactly have a powerhouse running game, too many failures in short yardage and on goal to go situations (wonder if BM continues the green zone terminology), across the entire stable of running backs. The RB by committee may have been particularly difficult for AW, albeit none of them liked it, for many reasons.

Largely the same offense, but new regime, new OL coach, body makeover, and a will to succeed. McAdoo has noticed, and we did see a couple or three very "not AW" runs Friday night, and that was the first Exh game, as he tries to develop his new persona. I say let's give him a chance, see some more carries: Jennings is not young, Darkwa while I like him seems a bit injury-prone (lots of nicks kept him off the field a lot), Vereen has a different role and PP, different kind of back. There is a potential slot in the Giants' backfield for him, and it would be a big positive if Williams can up his game and become more productive in 2016.
cool that
PaulBlakeTSU : 8/17/2016 12:35 pm : link
he was dedicated to transforming his body, but it says that he abandoned his typical lifting routine. If he eschewed lifts like squats, cleans, and dead lifts for the pursuit of chasing higher rep exercises like push-ups and pull-ups, I'm not sure he made the intelligent decision for improving aspects of being a running back like explosiveness, acceleration, and power.
Rooting for him
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/17/2016 12:53 pm : link
but I don't think they're keeping 4 RBs

Vereen, Jennings, and Perkins are certainly staying.

ColHowPepper : 8/17/2016 12:56 pm : link
valid question, but did you see his carries on Friday? It is, of course, way too early to draw definitive conclusions from one exhibition game, but there were indications that his acceleration and "explosiveness" (using the word advisedly) have improved, or rather, appeared to now make their presence felt. Can't address power yet, from what I saw.

on this whole Andre Williams sucks meme. A lot of you guys really don't know what you're talking about. Where to start:

A running back like Williams needs a ton of carries to get going. Running back by committee is not going to help that.

As many have pointed out, he doesn't catch well which means he's going to be limited in his time on the field until he does. This is the NFL not college. It's on him to improve his ability to catch the ball. That has to be on your resume to be a successful back.

When having these discussions keep in ming how abysmal the Giants OL was last year. Williams is the type of back that needs somewhere to run. There was very little daylight in front of him last year.

There was, and is, no on to set the edge on this team. The lack of blocking coming from the TE position is a joke. When the TE is knocked back into the backfield, as he was on many of the Giants running plays, there's literally no place to go. You guys keep hemming and hawing about finding the daylight, last year there was none. That could still be a problem this year. Every back will look better with a TE who can set the edge.

Having said all this I'm not saying this guy doesn't have his faults. All running backs do, but let's show a little patience here. I've seen him in college. The guy can run and has a lot of untapped ability. Plus, he seems to have an incredible work effort. That can go a long way. Let's give him a chance.
Agree that Williams has been targeted by BBI this year but
Jimmy Googs : 8/17/2016 1:21 pm : link
any RB that "needs a ton of carries to get going" isn't going to last in the NFL very long...

Do you think bulking up was at the suggestion of Coughlin and Palmieri? I think I saw that both Williams and Landon Collins dropped some weight this offseason, is this possibly a sign that the new regime has some stark philosophical differences at work?
Any Back
wonderback : 8/17/2016 1:29 pm : link
Will tell you he wants the ball more. There's a reason for that. Most guys run better the more they get it. I know I did, in fact I'm amazed that guys like Vereen can come in for a play or two an excel. I'm sure every back on last years team hated the running back by committee plan.

It's a tough argument to make. If your not producing enough positive yards you're not going to get the football. The less you get it, the less you produce. This is going to be tough for a guy on a team with 5 running backs. Let's see how it plays out. You do have to make the most of your opportunities.

Bromley, too.

Bromley mentioned it in an interview during OTAs (and before he had his ankle surgery). The Giants had him put on weight after he was drafted (old regime), and this year they wanted him to take it off (new regime), which he has.
I believe John Mara himself said one of the big changes

It is good to see Williams doing what he can to make a change (losing weight, extra juggs practice, etc). Clearly someone on the coaching staff got to him...

Yes, and there was no improvement.

People have already forgotten how bad the offense was the second he got into the game.
If he's not catching passes, he's going to be a liability.

Well, there seems to be some improvement this year, at least in practice, unless you believe that Patti's just blowing smoke up your ass when she reported that Williams was catching everything thrown at him.

He may never approach Roger Craig status, but if he gets close to Brandon Jacobs he'll be an asset instead of a liability.
Klaatu
LeonofKiev : 8/17/2016 2:25 pm : link
He's never going to be close to Jacobs in his prime.
Practice means absolutely nothing to me personally, thanks to Randle.
He's not going to all of a sudden become a great pass catcher (which is needed) in this offense.
He's never been asked to do it and I don't think it'll start now.

I think Olympic lifts are great for power and explosion, but it requires a lot of training and practice to get the form right to avoid injury. I could see these guys not putting in the time (or teams not wanting to spend the time) to work with these guys one-on-one to get those lifts down (specifically cleans and snatches).

I'm still waiting for you to back up your assertion that Williams worked as hard to improve his receiving last year as he has this year. To me, it smacks of a typical area junc post, in which something is stated as a fact, but it's impossible to verify.

I posted what Pat Traina reported - that Williams has been putting in the extra time to improve his receiving and it seems to be paying off.

You said that we heard the same thing last year, and when I asked you if we really did, you just said "yes" and drove on. Frankly, I think that's BS...that you really don't know one way or the other, but because it fits your narrative it works for you. Judging by what he looked like a year ago and his strong work ethic in the gym, he might have just been a dude who was really into hitting the weights and didn't hate looking like a bodybuilder. Dude's a natural freak. I think Palmieri's programs are very powerlifter-based, which also tends to increase strength and bulk at the expense of flexibility, quickness, and acceleration.
