From Zierlein's draft profile of Obarski on nfl.com:
Quote:
ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Held down both kicking and punting duties all four years at Concordia. Showed strong accuracy from distance as a senior making 9 of 10 from 40-plus yards, including a 56-yarder. Kicked a 59-yard field goal as a sophomore and had longs of 56 in each of his next two seasons.
WEAKNESSES Power in his field goals doesn't translate to kickoffs, with a career touchback average of about 30 percent. Had a disastrous campaign as a junior kicker, missing all 7 kicks from 40-49 yards.
DRAFT PROJECTION Round 7 or priority free agent
BOTTOM LINE Former high school soccer standout with a quality leg from distance, knocking down 5 of 8 kicks during his career from 50-plus, including makes from 59, 56 and 56. While his lack of kickoff power hurts, he could be drafted on his deep accuracy and strong senior performance. Obarski also drilled a 49-yarder in the Senior Bowl game.
Not worried about his Junior slump. I mean, he'll face way less pressure against Dallas than he did at Concordia, against the likes of St. Olaf and Duluth Lutheran.
I wonder if this is why he was out earlier in training camp Â

Could also have been the reason NYG waited a bit to re-sign him. Seemed as if it should've been a formality, but wasn't with us til April 18th....and free agency started March 9th.

True enough. Some of those farm boys are BIG. Funny thing: I looked at Concordia's schedule and they play Carleton. Carleton has a football team??? Ultimate frisbee, sure. Flag football, maybe. But actual tackle football, with helmets and stuff? How barbaric! (In case you haven't guessed, my wife went there.)
Sheldon Richardson was driving 143 MPH in a high-speed chase with a guy with a semi-automatic handgun and a strong marijuana odor in the car and got 1 game.

It's also just a guess.
But did you hear about the arrest and report?
no way a giants player gets. dui and no one hears about it...
also brown would not of come out and said I don't agree with the suspension if it was a dui...

I'm going to guess it's this criterion that was applied and that it is connected to the (allegedly) stolen phone incident on July 12.

#Giants K Josh Brown loses $72,058 in salary, will miss out on $15,625 game roster bonus. Total: $87,683 for his 1-game suspension.
the salary is guaranteed for the year. Only if a vet is signed after week 1, is the salary week-to-week.
Strong. Nice call there.
I just mentioned it as a consideration. I think the league minimum for a vested veteran is like $760,000. It's not my money, but I don't think Mara is cool with spending 3/4 of a million dollars for 1 game of kickoff, PATs, and field goal duty.

If that doesn't pan out, the Giants might benefit from their favorable waiver-wire position, assuming Obarski hasn't earned the staff's confidence by then.

It's not a matter of needing cap space. It is about understanding nuances of the league something that you don't understand. Yesterday, you thought Cruz could be PUP'd when everyone knows he is ineligible as he has already practiced. You demonstrate time and again that you have no understanding of the league rules.

Sue me, i confused the pup list with being put on IR with a designation to return. It was also earlier today. Should I suggest you have no conception of time because you made a mistake?
I did know that the contract would be guaranteed what I'm saying who gives a shit about a 1 million contract being on the books? Has no effect on the cap long term and with it being a divisional game that's money well spent. It's not our money.

If Brown is losing $80k for the game, do you think paying $750,000 for a single game replacement is irrelevant? We will need that money for other things this season; don't worry, it will get spent. But over a healthy kicker that got himself suspended for one reason or another? Mara is probably fuming. By salary, he's the teams MVP in production!

There is no way the Giatns are going to use up all 17 million this season.
I know this motherfucker misses one kick a year..... Â
But it always seems like it is a pressure kick that hurts us. If Obarski comes through in the Dallas game and really proved himself, I would cut Brown's ass. By the way, I guarantee you that whatever this dumb fuck did it will come out, and it will embarrass this team.
Damn, I really think that Dallas game might come down to a FG too
All the more reason to drop 50 on em.
I really hope this giants team has turned the corner and is a hell of alot better than the past few years where they've gotten into these last second FG nail biting pain in the ass games. We should be 10x better than dallas this year, blow them the fuck out.
are things going to well ...

points .. Our Specials should be very good .....

You do realize that unused cap space can be rolled over into next years pool of money to be spent on resigning your own players as well as free agents
In an absolute pinch (kicker is injured in-game), I'd actually feel ok about letting Beckham act as kicker. Inside 40 yards I'd bet he's pretty good.
Losing Brown for the opener is a pretty big deal. Special teams are often a factor in the early weeks as teams are still gelling and finding out who their best backups are. This kind of sucks.
And hope he is eligible for Dallas until the appeal is heard and then out for the Saints the next week.
According to his statement, he's already exhausted all his appeal options (which makes sense, given that the incident happened in spring 2015).
If this happened on another team with better local reporters, it probably would have been broken a lot earlier, but that's not the Giants' lot in coverage.
I think the Giants should sign the biggest available leg Â
so that kickoffs are handled. As for field goals, play an aggressive attack offense against that vulnerable Cowboys defense and score touchdowns early.
I know that's easier said than done, but I think kickoffs are going to be more important against the Cowboys than field goals. Don't play a ball-control style, though. Think big against that depleted front 7.

The victim then called 911, according to the police report, and alleged an assault. The report states the victim had "redness" on the wrist, "and a small cut, possibly from a fingernail."

Yeah, but arc. It doesn't actually say he grabbed his wife. It totally skirts around that for some reason. Read it again man.

Does it not say "Brown grabbed the victims wrist"?
It says he was arrested at their residence where she lives with him.
He could be referring to Santa Claus - whoever was in the house with them. The connection that the wife is the "victim" is never made. It's a really bad article by Kratch.

I don't think it's considered a "domestic violence" charge, which this is.. if the person involved is not a resident or family member living in the same home.
If some random person just happened to be there and get into a scuffle with Brown, I don't think it would still be labeled as such.
I agree it's shitty reporting without many actual facts or evidence but it's not too difficult to connect the dots and conclude that whatever happened was between he and his wife.
Can't imagine anyone's wife calling the police for something like that..
It is a one game suspension. One game. So whatever happened he is getting the least possible penalty. Whatever it was wasn't much of anything.
Question is, if the charge was dropped, why was he suspended. People make allegations about things all the time.

Exactly. And they could have fined him instead, right? Or does this kind of "violation" call specifically for a suspension (I legitimately don't know). The application of penalties (suspensions, fines, etc.) just seems so inconsistent. If the charges were dropped, I don't think there should have been any repercussions. It seems like there is more to the story. And it is interesting that this happened last year and is only coming out now.

Something about "protecting the shield."
Do we sign a freaking kicker for one week? What the hell
Let OBJ kick week 1, fck signing a kicker and taking that roster spot.

Suspended players do not count against the 53, so it's not an issue of "taking that roster spot".
They will sign someone that week and release him after Brown is reinstated.

Again, no we would not have to take use 2 spots on a kicker for week one.

How are we with No Cruz ????
Good Enough As long as his replacement can Kick extra
points .. Our Specials should be very good .....
"Bring in whoeverthefuck, anyone can kick".
"He misses one kick a year BUT it's always a BIG kick".
And my favorite.
"Let Odell kick!"
Holy asshairs. If whatever this is didn't allegedly happen, you jackasses wouldn't have anything stupid to post. Refuckinglax.

the salary is guaranteed for the year. Only if a vet is signed after week 1, is the salary week-to-week.
Who gives a shit about this? The team has 17 million in cap space.
It's not a matter of needing cap space. It is about understanding nuances of the league something that you don't understand. Yesterday, you thought Cruz could be PUP'd when everyone knows he is ineligible as he has already practiced. You demonstrate time and again that you have no understanding of the league rules.

You do realize that unused cap space can be rolled over into next years pool of money to be spent on resigning your own players as well as free agents
Losing Brown for the opener is a pretty big deal. Special teams are often a factor in the early weeks as teams are still gelling and finding out who their best backups are. This kind of sucks.
According to his statement, he's already exhausted all his appeal options (which makes sense, given that the incident happened in spring 2015).
If this happened on another team with better local reporters, it probably would have been broken a lot earlier, but that's not the Giants' lot in coverage.
I know that's easier said than done, but I think kickoffs are going to be more important against the Cowboys than field goals. Don't play a ball-control style, though. Think big against that depleted front 7.
I don't condone domestic violence on any level and he never should have grabbed her at all but this whole thing just sounds silly.

Who says he grabbed "her?"

A red wrist and a small cut from a fingernail. Oy..

Who says he grabbed "her?"
The police report.
The victim then called 911, according to the police report, and alleged an assault. The report states the victim had "redness" on the wrist, "and a small cut, possibly from a fingernail."
Is it true? I don't know.

According to the police report, Brown and the victim "quarrelled (sic)." Brown grabbed the victim's wrist while the victim was picking up a phone, according to police.

Yeah, but arc. It doesn't actually say he grabbed his wife. It totally skirts around that for some reason. Read it again man.

Does it not say "Brown grabbed the victims wrist"?
The quote from the article says exactly that.
I had to read it like five times to see the bullshit nuance.
Can't imagine anyone's wife calling the police for something like that..

Ok, got it. By the way, was I silly in 07 when I disagreed with many of the posters here about the status of coach Coughlin and wanted to keep him.
As I recall several were just like you. Unable to handle any opinion that differed from theirs without being childish.
I don t like Brown as the kicker. Don t trust him in big spots, another Jay Feeley.

It is a one game suspension. One game. So whatever happened he is getting the least possible penalty. Whatever it was wasn't much of anything.
Question is, if the charge was dropped, why was he suspended. People make allegations about things all the time.
Many kickers are like baseball closers walking that fine line between quiet confidence and loud ridicule.

Both can be simultaneously true. :)
