Owa seems to combine traits from some of the Giant's greatest defensive ends. Strahan's heavy hands and gap-toothed smile, Osi's explosive burst -- Owa recorded a 4.62 40-yard dash and 39-inch vertical at 267 pounds -- Justin Tuck's disciplined yet relentless play, and JPPs overwhelming power. |
LOL.
Next step is to work on the spelling?
LOL.
Good catch. That was weird.
Vax, for all his outstanding even remarkable athletic traits he doesn't seem to have the bend guys like Stay, Tuck, and Osi had. That JPP in fact has in spades, and is working on improving it ever since he destroyed half his own hand. He doesn't seem to move like a cat...
That said, neither does OV. They are more like Dobermans or Rottweilers... fast, powerful, and just relentless.

OO had surgery on both hips. Never heard of that for a football player. He seems healthy now which is great. The only knock on OO's draft reports was he can't rush the passer. Looks like that was wrong...

OV has bend for sure. He has so many moves though.
Thompson
Collins
Apple
Entire LB crew
Hankins
Odi
Those are our wild cards. Out of every single one of them, Odi is the one with the best set-up. Back-up OV/JPP and be a threat on great 3rd and long fronts.
He's so important for us.

If Hankins is healthy, I'd hardly call him a wildcard.
2nd of all I just named 5 players who we expect to do more than him from an 11 player unit, meaning that Hanks not even expected to be among the top half of players on our D.
He's a wild card, one that will hopefully be really good and allow our DL to reach its top 3/5 potential. But Hank is a wildcard.

While OO might not have that bend (and I believe OV does just from what I saw in that first game), I dont think that is needed to be a good pass rusher. Tuck wasn't much of a "bender" either. While I think its good to have bend, I dont think its a necessity to be a good pass rusher, especially when you are rushing from the DT spot.
There are a variety of ways that powerful guys like OO can get to the qb without bend (bull rush, swim move, clubbing). The guy seems like a smart kid, and I am looking forward to see what he can do at the 3rd DE spot this year. We havent had depth at that spot for a long time now.
Perhaps I am being unfair to OV, but I compare him to JPP running those drills where they weave around tackling/blocking dummies, and JPP looks to me considersbly lower, more agile and snake like, and faster - and he's the larger man by a good bit.
But that may be a really unfair comparison, since JPP's natural athletic gifts are extraordinary.
It looks like Vernon is a lot more well-rounded than JPP in terms of pass-rush moves, probably because he has to be since he's not in that class of astonishing athlete like a JPP, Julius Peppers.
If Hankins plays well and the Giants do not resign him, I'll probably go ballistic. I understand about Linval Joseph but there is no $ excuse now. Talk to Eli.
we shall see...
I think he is a top notch run stuffer and he and SNACKS will make the middle very difficult to run through. 3rd and a yard should be tough for offenses.
DT Hankins will get big bucks in UFA if he is able to parlay his talents (decent pass rusher) with the play of the DE's who should be pressuring the QB into Hankins hands at times.
As far as OWA goes, if he does exceedingly well tomorrow at 4pm, especially in the "Four Aces" alignment as a pass rusher, I will be on his bandwagon big-time and hoping he is the "next Justin Tuck" and such. He has an incredibly quick first step and on passing downs he should wreak havoc. Just stay healthy man.
Harrison is the one you can definitely say is not a pass rusher. From what I've seen Hankins gets a lot of push when he's out there. He's not good enough to do it alone, but as part of a line with quality DEs, which he had in 14, he did some good things.
Jon, if that's his asking price, yes damn it, he's gone. I was thinking maybe $6M. This season will probably determine his price tag. We seem to have lost the last 4 DTs we drafted that were good. Sucks big time. Guess the Jets feel the same. Couldn't have both Wilkerson & Harrison.
They've got a decision to make on JPP, which would benefit from another premium draft pick at the position.
p.s.-- I want to see Bromley step up. He was the one drafted to be a 3-technique and he is the one with two years left on his contract.
Snacks is one of the best run stuffers in the league and he's only 27. OV was the best defensive player in the NFL over the final 8 games last year. He may turn out to be great.
The Jenkins contract really pissed me off.
Like Jon says the D is built around DEs and CBs. Funny thing is the way Thompson looks they could be fielding a great tandem of safeties going forward.
Collins is a much better player in the box, and it seems like he and DT are hitting it off as a pair.
