Is the new slew of Giants beat reporters underwhelming?

gidiefor : Mod : 8/19/2016 8:21 am
I don't know about the rest of you -- but I've been quickly turned off by Duggan, Leonard, and even Kratch - they all seem a little childish and trite to me, and I find myself mostly passing up their articles.

Lots of good story lines out there but it seems like I'm seeing the same stuff over and over.
I remember seeing similar posts

about Raanan when he took over the beat, and now he's well respected. Give it time. These guys are still finding their niche.

Actually, Duggan provided a few nuggets during the camp tweets that had me think "this guy is filling in nicely for Jordan".
yeah - I don't feel bothered -- just underwhelmed
gidiefor : Mod : 8/19/2016 9:38 am : link
Raanan came in and really worked at it -- these other guys seem to think that good enough is being like everyone else -- or just trying to be clever/cute

I am not finding most of what they are reporting to be illuminating about the sport or the Giants - or that they are adding anything to the table

talking about X's and O's is definitely asking too much too

^This. No one liked Ranaan at first either. It takes time for the reporters to build up the sources and develop a "feel" for their audience and team.

I didn't feel the same way about Jordan at all -- he seemed to relish it more and have a savage intelligence -- Duggan and Leonard have been especially dissappointing to me -- but also Kratch seems to have lost that spirit -- Jordan may have pushed him a little when they were together

but as a columnist myself, it really bothers me that nearly every one of her articles has multiple typos.

And I only do my thing part-time. You'd think part of the job would be getting syntax and spelling right - and that's not even addressing the times players have been mistakenly reported to play positions they don't, and other basic mistakes.
I agree.
Dodge : 8/19/2016 9:47 am : link
Duggan did some kind of "video cast" his first week. It looked like he did it in his bedroom. I just don't get the feel of professionalism from them.

It seems to be a group of fansite operators.

Jordan, Pat and Rock are my usual go to's for info.

as for Patti -- she's a little smug for my taste, and she seems to think no one should get on her for her constant barrage of typos -- there's a certain lack of professionalism in all that to me - but sloppiness like that in a professional reporter leads to my having doubts about their observations and content accuracy

I've unfollowed Trania on twitter. Honestly she adds very little - she asks followers for Giants questions, and 99% of her answers are "Hmm. Don't know. Maybe. Tough to say." etc.

I understand not every question can be answered in complete certainty, but what's the value in following a beat reporter that has absolutely NOTHING to add or no "take" to offer the public?

We are about 4 weeks into preseason, and all anxious for any football news, but there really isn't that much to write about yet.

I'm sympathetic about how they have to file a story every day, and sometimes it ends up being about the same few humdrum tidbits of news - Cruz, OL depth, who's calling plays, now we have the Josh Brown story to beat to death for a few days. McAdoo clearly follows the mold of a coach who tries to reveal nothing newsworthy when he talks. Plus there's virtually no game planning in preseason, so precious little to write about how we approach different opponents.

Let's give them all a chance to cover a few weeks of the season and have some actual game action and Xs and Os to write about.

They've been underwhelming, well before this current crop.
Devon : 8/19/2016 12:22 pm : link
Most of them have seemed like good enough people, but the Giants have had bottom tier coverage and reporting, compared to the rest of the league (including much, much smaller markets), for quite awhile now.

It's partly why acting like the media here is some deterrent or extra level of pressure for players like some still do is silly.

I thought Ranaan was mediocre his first couple months on the job but grew to really like him. I think they deserve some slack.

actually -- it's not the story lines per se -- it's the content of the story -- you do report news well -- you seem to enjoy scooping the dirt on Brown in authoritative detail -- but we football fans crave details about how the players are doing on the field, what they are doing on the field, how they are doing it, and how the team is approaching football
Not impressed by any of them. At all.
B in ALB : 8/19/2016 12:43 pm : link
Some of these guys write as if it's a second job for them and they're putting their columns together at lunch. The Kratch article the other night about Brown was so shoddy and created more questions than answers just for the sake of clicks. Poorly done.

And Traina offers about as much insight into actual football as the local community news throwaway/dog cage liner. And for some reason people get very uppity when she is criticized. I don't know if it's b/c she's a woman or what - but she's not good.

I guess the jury is still out on the dude from Mass. But I've read nothing from him that impresses me. Biggest market in the country and this is what we get?

I'll stick to Rock and BBI camp/practice reports for information. This new crop makes us ham n eggers look like Woodwards and Bernsteins.

There are some fans who would want scans of the playbook. What you're seeing from the Giants writers is pretty common around the league. There's only so much detail teams allow to be recorded and given out.

Some teams, even spotlight-hogs like Dallas, tightly censor what media members report.

if they hang around here long enough, either lurking or active, they will get a sense of what floats with more informed football fans and what doesn't. They will benefit from the discussions here and their work will eventually show it. Rannan was pilloried here when he first started.

That said, based on the nature of their business, there will always be demands for them to produce on specific topics or during slow times when there is little new that will still result in those puff pieces we all disdain.

Gidie. I'm really not smug. If I was I don't think I'd have lasted as long as I have and not built up the contacts and business relations I have. All things considered, I do my best with the fans on Twitter -- and I do get quite a few people who come out with head scratching thoughts.

Re: the typos -- I write for a very small paper that depends on subscription fees. We have a professional proofreader who looks at our issues but unfortunately we don't have a budget for the blog stuff. I do my best to self-proofread but I just don't have the luxury of copy editors like the papers and ESPN do.

Twitter typos? Guilty. I work on a small iPhone keyboard. I wear eyeglasses for distance so it sometimes distorts my reading vision. Plus I'm often in a hurry to push out a tweet because I don't want to miss the next play. When I do tweet I try to give people something different.

Do I make mistakes? Yes. But so does everyone. I try to limit those and I own up to it. I'm human. Does it bother me? You bet it does. I take pride in my writing. So I use my mistakes as a lesson and move on.

I often get the same questions a dozen or so times during a Q&A. I'm not sure how I can reasonably predict a player's stats for the season. And sometimes as you said, I can't answer the question either because I don't know or I can reveal what I might know. But I do my best and I do try to acknowledge everyone who asks a question. When I do mailbags I think those come out pretty goo because I'm not limited to 144 characters. And I'm trying to experiment with other avenues for Q&As.

B: send me your email address to editor@insidefootball.com. I will send you a copy of one of our current issues. I think you might change your mind about me when you read it.

That offer goes for anyone else on this board who thinks I suck--just tell me your BBI handle and I'll send you a copy, no charge, no string attached. I guarantee you'll see something a lot closer to what you crave.

Remember I have a different situation than the other beats. I have to filter what I give away for free and what I give to the subscribers. If you're a business owner you might appreciate that fine line I have to walk.
