NFT: Rio Olympics 8/21--Closing Ceremonies

sjnyfan : 8/21/2016 10:41 am
But before we get there, there are a few more golds to be settled and USA are favored in a few.

Medal Count: USA has a 116-70 lead on China and a 43-27 gold medal lead on Great Britain. It's the third most medals in US history which is impressive considering the top two. #2 was '84 in Los Angeles where the USSR boycotted. The US won 174 medals. 1904 in St. Louis, the US won 239 (!!!) medals. But only 13 countries competed and the the US had about 5 times as many athletes as the other 12 countries combined.

The marathon is in its final stretch. American Galen Rupp is currently in line for a bronze.

Men's Volleyball is also in progress. The US is playing Russia for bronze.

Claressa Shields is favored to repeat as the Middleweight Gold Medal winner in Women's boxing.

Kyle Snyder is in the Gold Medal match in wrestling this afternoon.

The final event of the Rio games is the gold medal match in Men's Basketball at 2:45. USA will face Serbia. This is the first time Serbia is in the gold medal game since 1996 when they were still Yugoslavia but they also played the US in the final of the most recent World Championship two years ago. That US team won by 37. This team however only won by 3 last week. We'll see what kind of game we get.

Finally, Simone Biles will carry the flag in the closing ceremonies, one of several deserving athletes. Who would you have picked?

What was your favorite moment of these games?

Great race by him. I think they said he's the only person to win Olympic medals in the 10,000m and the marathon.
Biles and Phelps seem to
section125 : 8/21/2016 10:52 am : link
be the best candidates for the flag and Phelps already carried in the opening..

Allyson Felix should have been a candidate, too. So really Biles or Felix..

Phelps went back to the US a few days ago. Felix would also be a good candidate to carry the flag but Biles is very deserving to say the least
Double Trap and Skeet Shooter Kim Rhode would've been my pick
sjnyfan : 8/21/2016 11:39 am : link
She's the first woman and second Olympian overall to win a medal in 6 straight Olympics as well as the first to win medals on five continents. She's also the first Summer Olympian to do it. The other guy did it in Luge. She won her first medal as a 17 year old in Atlanta back in '96 followed by bronze in Sydney, gold in Athens, silver in Beijing, gold in London and then bronze last week.

I thought Ibtihaj Muhammad would've been nice but also understand the political firestorm that would've caused.

Andrew Bogut fouled out with more than 7 minutes left in the 3rd. Australia leads 52-51 after being down 12 in the first half.
Kipchoge ran a great race..dropped the pack with 4:43 mile at 18

Mongolia-Uzbekistan wrestling match for bronze
dpinzow : 8/21/2016 1:39 pm : link
the Mongolian was winning by a point and started celebrating with 5 second left, retreating from his opponent. The ref gave a penalty point to Uzbekistan, who won the match on count-back. Then the Mongolian coaches ran to the judges and did a Ric Flair/Magic Mike by stripping down to their underpants in protest. The crowd was going wild over the Mongolian protest
I saw Claressa Shields
sjnyfan : 8/21/2016 2:10 pm : link
She was dominant. I wish I would've seen the wrestling.

Wow medals in 6 Olympics.. Yes she would have been a good choice.
End of that wrestling match was nuts
sjnyfan : 8/21/2016 2:32 pm : link
I've never anything like that but poor sportsmanship by the Mongolian coaches nonetheless. The ref was right.

Meanwhile, Kyle Snyder wins gold for 97kg freestyle.

Kyle Fucking Snyder

Have followed him since he was about 13. An absolute freak of nature. Congrats to him.

And Frank Molinaro had a hell of a day today. So close to bronze.

But Lochte was the biggest embarrassment..
Jordan sucks.

Constantly losing his man on defense.
Bunch of one on one bullshit from the us
B in ALB : 8/21/2016 3:01 pm : link
No ball movement, jacking up wild shots, sloppy defense.

Boogie looking like he's going to lose it any second.
That was one ugly quarter to watch
dpinzow : 8/21/2016 3:07 pm : link
The USA leads 19-15 after one
Here are the problems in order.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 8/21/2016 3:09 pm : link
1 - Point guards: Kyrie and Lowry are scorers. Int'l game needs a distributor FIRST.

2 - Center: Int'l center needs to be able to spread the floor or pass in pick & roll. Jordan & Boogie don't do that.

3 - Klay Thompson: Has been bad most of the tourney... needed to be one of the 3 best players on the team.

4 - Melo: I love the guy, but he shouldn't be starting. He needed to be in 2012 Vinnie Johnson role.

The reason you see so much one on one is the combo of my first 2 points. Klay has to have a big game the rest of the way.
Huge celebration
allstarjim : 8/21/2016 3:13 pm : link
Of corruption.

Great respect for the athletes but I find it hard to really watch the games knowing how corrupt the IOC is. I've watched a few events but will not watch the closing ceremony just as I didn't the opening ceremony.
The Durantula taking over...
shockeyisthebest8056 : 8/21/2016 3:16 pm : link
8 straight points.
Durant dominating
dep026 : 8/21/2016 3:25 pm : link
for those who are struggling to watch this team. Remember, who is not here.

CP3 and Russ would be at the PG
Curry and Harden at the 2
Durant and George at the 3
Lebron and Melo at the 4
Davis and Griffin at the 5

then throw in Klay and Love as the 2 subs. No one comes within 30 off that team.
Durant just beasting.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 8/21/2016 3:26 pm : link

what else new..another US basketball gold

Coach K finally with the small lineup.
A huge 2nd quarter
dpinzow : 8/21/2016 3:30 pm : link
It's 52-29 at the half
2nd quarter was US basketball.
section125 : 8/21/2016 3:31 pm : link
Durant on fire. Great ball movement. And wonder of wonders - very good defense...
Cousins is such a stud.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 8/21/2016 3:32 pm : link
As an NBA fan, I hope he gets out of the wasteland that is Sacramento.
KD with 24 at the half
sjnyfan : 8/21/2016 3:33 pm : link
The 2nd quarter was the best the US has played the entire Olympics. I hope Melo gets hot in the 2nd half as this is most likely his last game for USA.
That sequence just now with Durant and Klay Thompson
dpinzow : 8/21/2016 3:54 pm : link
is going to be a common theme this NBA season...how the hell did the NBA allow Durant to GSW?
They just talked about Australia missing out on a medal
dpinzow : 8/21/2016 3:59 pm : link
by 1 point vs. Spain. Don't think that's happening in 4 years when they add Ben Simmons, Dante Exum and potentially Thon Maker. They'll be playing us for the gold IMO. We'll still win but they're going to have a legit team
Ainge needs to make the move for Boogie.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 8/21/2016 4:22 pm : link
If he gets him for picks, Cs and Cavs become the top two teams by far in the East.
In the end, a pretty easy gold medal
dpinzow : 8/21/2016 4:32 pm : link
When Durant, Carmelo and company put the defensive effort into it there was no chance for anyone else

these Olympics end with 121 medals, an American record for a fully attended Olympics. 46 golds is also tied for the American record for a fully attended Olympics, tying 2012's 46 golds

It was a pleasure to do so. I've been a huge fan of the Olympics since I was a kid for it's top notch athleticism, patriotism and humanity. I don't know if I'll do the '18 Winter Olympics as I don't know as much about majority of the sports but we'll see. Lord willing, I'll be happy to do it again in 2020.

Final Medal Count: USA 121-70 over China and 46-26 Golds over Great Britain.

I may watch a bit of the Closing Ceremonies but otherwise back to football!

about the Rio Olympics was the absolutely dominating performance of the
United States' track and field team. We won 13 gold medals and thirty-one total metals, our best performance since 1984 when the entire Eastern bloc boycotted the games. We medaled in almost every event, with the best being in the middle distances and field events. For a track and field fan it was just an amazing meet. Finally, hats off to NBC for finally showing every event including the preliminaries, something the network has not done in the past.
