Loss of Coughlin showing?

Josh in MD : 8/21/2016 2:58 pm
Whether to fire TC, or to fire only TC, was debated here ad nauseam. In truth, none of us could know how much of the team's mediocrity was attributable to him. The possibility least discussed was that he coached a sub-mediocre collection of talent up to a level of mediocrity, i.e., 5-11 talent to 8-8. Of course this was only one preseason game. But in 60 years as Giants fan, I have never seen them look worse than yesterday. It might all mean nothing, but the worry nags.

We haven't even game planned for a single regular season game yet

Can we at least give McAdoo a chance to do that?

a few years ago to watch them lose 38-0 I believe on a day where Carolina was missing a slew of key starters on defense and we could barely gain a yard that day. We also gave up 7 sacks and fell to 0-3. That was one of the worst I've seen...Also the back to back games where we got blown out by Atlanta and Baltimore the same season were awful...let's all not panic too much here

He has been to two Giants games live - Carolina and Atlanta, and he's yet to see them score a point!

I don't think so. They seemed to look a lot like the 6-10 teams he led the last two seasons...
Coughlin has coached games that have been as horrific...
Milton : 8/22/2016 8:47 am : link
...as any you will see. There have been heartbreaking collapses, humiliating blowouts, and penalty-fests under his regime that rival the worst of the worst. And I don't know if there's ever been a head coach who has had to fire more of his coordinators during his reign than has Teflon Tom. And I'm talking in all the NFL, not just the Giants.
The look of this team has nothing to do with Coughlin or McAdoo
andrew_nyg : 8/22/2016 9:05 am : link
at this point. It has everything to do with Jerry Reese.

Thus far, no TE, No competent LT, a RT whose playing LT, no back-up QB to speak of, a pedestrian stable of running backs, a ton of LB's who knows which ones are starting material...and outside of Odell, a TON of young potential at WR with no proven production.

In order to have any proven talent along the DL and to upgrade CB, the franchise had to dole out $200M in salaries because the drafting was so terrible.

Whether Coughlin should have remained or not, Reese should be gone.
Anytime a new, first time HC starts there is uncertainty.

But getting your panties in a bunch after the 2nd preseason game is just stupid.

The defense looked like it wasn't on the field the first two games. I don't know when I've seen worse play....

Maybe '82 with Scott Brunner? I was young so it's fuzzy.

I saw a defense trying some new things, new schemes, new blitzes, I also saw Eli look a little off in timing. That's about it.
Loved Coughlin

He deserves to be in Canton. That said, he cost the team 3-4 games last year with poor end game play calling and clock management.

Let it go. Let Tom ride off into the sunset.

look I was extremely critical of TC I hated his insistent loyalty to his coaches that were not doing a good job especially his T & C coaches with their antiquated system

but I think everyone is missing the point of what TC DID bring to the table

currently this team is making -ton of mental mistakes
missed blocking assignments - breakdowns in communication - no cohesiveness especially in the offense - and too many penalties AND TOO MANY TURNOVERS

regardless of talent level a Coughlin team usually minimized mistakes like this team currently is having which does make me concerned

I don't agree. Coughlin's teams were plagued with mental mistakes, communication breakdowns, and too many turnovers. How many times did we see opponent's WR's wide open and our DB's looking dumbfounded at each other afterwards. And let's not forget penalties, often of the stupid variety.

The idea that Coughlin teams were disciplined is more reputation than fact. They often played like a poorly coached team during his reign. Too often!
just pathetic

We also lost a lot of assets to a variety of different injuries. Some were freak accidents (JPP), some guys' health rapidly declined (Nicks), David Wilson had a degenerative condition, and some guys got hurt in the weight room while supervised (Beatty). That's a lot of talent to make up for in a vacuum, and it's akin to bailing out water in a boat that's filling up with water.

Loss of Coughlin showing?

Absolutely. McAdoo does not have the experience or, frankly, the personality to be a head coach. Too cerebral. Reminds me of Ray Handley. Doesn't strike me as the type of guy who can rally the troops. Never was comfortable with his selection. Was basically picked so they wouldn't lose him. Could be a long by season and a short tenure here for him unless he gets it together.

It's amazing you gleaned all of that off of 2 preseason games.

Huh. So despite the players talking about how well he commands the room and how he's respected tremendously by the players - we have johnnyboy here telling us it's all bullshit. Awesome.

Listening to his diehard supporters, you'd think the man was Vince Lombardi.

Just enjoy season, even by week 8 it will be too early to size up Mac. They will have ups and downs way too much change for it not to be... some things will be better and others will be worse.
