NFL drops “probable” from injury report, redefines

sphinx : 8/21/2016 3:22 pm
“questionable” and “doubtful”

“The ‘Probable’ category was eliminated from the Game Status Report because approximately 95 percent of the players who were listed as ‘Probable’ in prior years did in fact play in the game,” the league explained. [...]

The NFL also has changed the meaning of “questionable” and “doubtful”; previously, the “questionable” category reflected a 50-50 likelihood of playing, and “doubtful” meant a 75-percent chance the player wouldn’t play. Now, “questionable” simply means that “it is uncertain as to whether the player will play in the game,” and “doubtful” means that “it is unlikely the player will participate.”

for week 1.
Is there a football purpose for giving any injury report at all?

I would think that a team would want to keep the other team guessing about who will play. Is this just an accommodation to gamblers...excuse me, the gaming industry?

At first blush I'd say no, but let's say a guy isn't on IR but is nicked up and in and out of the lineup, I would assume that has a bearing on FA, who is on the active roster for bonuses and simply having more data on a player's health. If he's not in the report and he doesn't play that's clearly a player who was passed over, again just another way to evalauate player performance vs. injury I would think
I did a little research on Google about the injury report.

The only thing the NFL rules say is that it is "to preserve the integrity of the game." You would think that the NFL would provide a better explanation of why it preserves the integrity of the game since there are FIVE PAGES of reporting rules. Here's why: it was all because of the GIANTS.

"The NFL introduced its weekly injury report in 1947, after the league suspended two members of the New York Giants suspected of associating with gamblers trying to "fix" the 1946 NFL Championship Game. The purpose of the report is to make available information on injuries public so gamblers have no reason to get close to players to obtain secret, inside information. In other words, the injury report, widely viewed--and often derided--as a tool to aid gambling, began as an attempt to insulate the sport from involving its members in gambling."

“doubtful” means ... “... unlikely ...”

That really clears things up.

How about:

"Player is likely to play"

"Player possibly will play"

"Player is unlikely to play"

or even simpler:

"Player is likely to play"

"Player is unlikely to play"

They could drop Doubtful as well

Playing
Questionable (may not play)
Out (not playing)

That covers it.
