5 months later, John Mara is holding a presser saying the "Offense is broken". The next 2 preseasons, it was plain to see our run game struggled and that obviously carried over into the subsequent seasons. I'm not saying the NYG are destined to struggle putting points up on the scoreboard, but there has definitely been a precedent between preseason illustrating flaws/weaknesses with this team.
Whether they score a lot or don't at this point isn't a big thing. I prefer they work on things and look at people in a variety of roles than have a goal of simply trying march down and score during the first two preseason games.
However I do think there has been a little more sloppy play than I would like to see. Sloppy play bothers me more than lack of scoring in the preseason.
Simply put last year everyone was wringing their hands about the offense same as they are again this year. Then they go into Dallas and if not for a stupid idea like don't score as you were about to take a ten point lead late in the fourth quarter they would have won.
They put up a lot of points and moved the ball up and down the field in that first game and at seasons end Eli threw for 35 touchdowns and only 14 interceptions. They had the 8th ranked offense in the entire league. The running game the last four games of the year finally came around. The entire offesne is back with a few new additions. Somehow I don't think they've forgotten how to play.
The thing I'm more worried about is the offensive operation on the sidelines. McAdoo is the head man now not Tom. New territory for him. Players seem to like his style though. So let's see what happens.
This is the week you pay attention and see where the team really is
Practice.
Game vs jets.
Wounded returning to practice.
The Giants vs Jets game should have 40 minutes or so of 1st teamers duking it out. The physical matchups and mental gaffes are what I'll be focusing on this week.
Q. Can our TE's block? A: I believe they will show much better this week. The practices and the games don't correlate so I was personally stunned at how HORRIBLE the TE blocking was. It can't possibly be this bad, right?
Q. Can our QB's connect on throws to WR's? A: Odell is a lock to lead the team in catches and yards. But can WR Victor Cruz be effective at least? Will rookie WR Shepard be a STUD like Odell was as a rookie? I do believe we hit the jackpot with Shepard but I am not yet sure on Cruz. Don't fool yourselves, we need Cruz to be effective if we are to have a GREAT offense.
Q. Can this OL run block? A: this OL finished strong last year and has been ok in practice but not so much in the games. I think this week's test vs Jets will show a lot. All hands on deck, and Pugh and Richburg lead this team to "average" run team stats which is a big improvement on last year. Say 14 - 18 area.....perhaps? Perkins will pick things up late and make this offense very freaking good.
So can we score and will we score? YES. I'll worry f injuries hit.
Running the ball the last two seasons and the resulting poor performance in the red zone and four minute offense, it s only natural to be a bit concerned about the play of the offensive line to this point in preseason.

except these are different players, different staff so no precedent...
I expect the offensive strategy to be pass first, which I believe will help set up the run game by getting opposing defenses back on their heels.
Two consecutive unsuccessful runs to start drives will hopefully be a thing of the past. We just saw it in the preseason because Mac needs to know what his offense has got for strengths. An overpowering middle run game is not it IMO.
I believe it will be more a subterfuge/misdirection type of run game, helped by the passing threat.
Cause and effect. The Score is the effect of too many three and outs.
the cause is that it is preseason and the vast majority of plays run on the down and distance against the Bills won't be run in the regular season.
The effect is that BBI predictably goes apeshit.
Along those line they don't even game plan for these games.
Sure it would be more fun had they won handily but that isn't really that important at this point. Obviously if it were Eli would have played more than one half of the two games.

true but you are forgetting one thing in at least 2 of the last three seasons they are making all these nice statistics and getting their running game going after they are out of contention there's not as much pressure when your out of the playoffs !!!!
They are doing that too. So one team's vanilla plays are better than the other teams. And yet, after having the starters leave with a 10-0 lead last week, people still judged the game as a debacle because the backups sucked.
You never know what preseason means to each team. Some are working on timing, some are working on a new scheme. The games are glorified scrimmages where even the coaches are more intent on trying to figure out the fringe starters and the bottom of the roster instead of the outcome.
The Giants were 6th in the NFL in scoring last year...
They will put some points up barring injury to Eli .
Hopefully there will be more opportunities as the
revamped defense will create more turnovers .
However the same run game flaws and finishing off teams
with the offense and less FG's and more TD's .
Mac obviously trying to get a look at a variety of players.
The 3rd and long, when OBJ broke for 20+ yards should be enough for us to relax.

No to what though? Specifically....
Uhh...the question about being concerned about only 10 points being scored in the first 2 games. That was the question, right?

Except aren't our opponents doing the same thing?
