Not only do I not believe they will keep 10 DL, I think there is a good chance they keep only eight.

When you consider how often they play a DE in the DT hole, there is no reason to keep more than 3 DT (Snacks, Hankins, Bromley) on the 53 man roster. They can always keep another on the practice squad. Nix, Hughes, and Cudjo are nothing more than a journeyman DT's who won't be active on game day if the Harrison, Hankins, and Bromley are healthy, so why waste a roster spot on him? If one of the three DT on the 53 man roster gets hurt, they can either promote from the practice squad (Milhouse?) or sign a veteran off the street (Nix? Hughes? Cudjo?) or the waiver wire.

Besides, Snacks and Hankins are run-stuffers and so is Nix. They don't need to keep three run-stuffing DT's on a 53 man roster that features the 4 aces on passing downs. It's 3-Technique DT's that the team is short of. Hopefully Bromley can step up and seize that role. I guess Milhouse is the next best candidate, but I imagine he can be safely kept on the practice squad.

p.s.-- On top of that, Stapleton says "at least 10 DL" as if there is a possibility they keep 11 DL!
At least 10?

That's crazy. 9 at the most.
Quite frankly,

I think Okwara might make it over Wynn. Wynn hasn't even been visible this pre-season and he was virtually non-existent the later part of last season too.
Wynn has been hurt, and Okwara has filled in nicely in his absence.

I thought Wynn regressed last year after showing some promise as a rookie. I can easily see the Giants letting him go and keeping Okwara. Okwara is a few years younger and has already shown more as a pass-rusher. In the upside department, Okwara wins hands down.

As for "at least ten DL?" Not a chance, in my opinion. Nine at the most - Five DEs and four DTs, most likely. Eight is certainly a possibility.
I think you have to keep 4 DTs because they are big guys and

they are going to tire out in a series of long drives even if you have a third to rotate in. Remember, the mantra is finish.

Three is plenty. I don't see them having more than three active on game day even if they keep four on the 53 man roster. Between the fact that DT hardly play on special teams and the fact that Spags likes to go with the 4 Aces on passing downs, there is no need to rotate more than 3 DT over the course of a game.
I'd rather see Hughes

Over Nix and I think Milhouse is almost a lock at this point. Okwara is going nowhere, he's a keeper.
A lot of arguments..

Having Marshawn Lynch as the RB ahead of guys like Adrian Peterson or even Jamaal Charles or Arian Foster is pretty bad. I mean if they go back to 2005 and leave LaDanlian Tomlinson off that's bad too. Even guys like Steven Jackson could make a case.

2006 - 2015?

I see two Giants Super Bowl championships. I couldn't care less about individual achievements.

3-4 DE's on 3rd down. I think 3 DT's would suffice, but even with 9, it would be 4 DT, 5 DE.

Milton while I agree they may keep only 8 DL (but more likely 9), they absolutely need 3 "run stuffing" DTs for short yardage and goal line situation,.. Remember when they had Canty, Joseph, and Bernard shutting down Atlanta in short yardage situations during the 2011 playoff run? Now they have Dallas's OL and stable of RBs to deal with, so I easily see the need for 3 wide bodied run stuffing DTs.

Is Bromley really that 3rd guy? Or Millhouse? Nix (or Hughes) has a real shot if they play more up to their potential than they have to this point. Nix in particular was once thought of pretty highly... knee injuries and questions about his work ethic and commitment derailed him to this point in the NFL. But if healthy and showing renewed commitment to the game, he has a very good shot as a 4th DT. And that's assuming Bromley is #3.

3 DEs are locks, but there's a big wide open battle for #4 and maybe #5. Nice to see Okwara flashing and possibly pushing Wynn down the depth chart or off the roster. Has he lined up vs anyone's 1s yet?

Why Hughes over Nix at this point? Both JAGS until now...
I wonder whether those are really the top-graded defensive rookies...
Big Blue Blogger : 8/23/2016 5:55 am : link
...or just the top-graded defensive UDFAs. Seems like an odd coincidence that the top three rookies were all undrafted.

PFF's original tweet might have been in error.
As for the number of defensive linemen on the 53-man roster...
Big Blue Blogger : 8/23/2016 6:15 am : link
...keep in mind that rosters are pretty fluid in Weeks 1 and 2. The Giants might initially keep their 53 best players, then normalize the positional allocation as waiver claims, veteran signings and the odd trade play out in September.

For example, if the staff concludes that their fourth safety, their fifth CB, and their eighth/ninth offensive lineman are all garbage, they could initially go light at those positions to retain an extra defensive lineman who has more value.

Over the long haul, it's not really feasible to keep more than ten DL, and equilibrium is likely to be reached at nine.
