Belichick: 3rd preseason game not in "same universe"

Big Blue '56 : 8/23/2016 11:13 am
as regular season..

Quote:

“I don’t. I don’t know what that means,” Belichick said. “In terms of playing time it might be a little different, but in terms of game-planning and strategy, what we see in the regular season compared to what we see the in third preseason game I don’t even think you’re in the same universe. We’re still running our basic plays and we’d expect our opponents would run their basic plays. You get to the opener and start to get to game-planning and scheme, I mean you’re in a totally different ballpark, in my opinion. I don’t see any comparison at all. It’s too far away, I don’t see how you could compare them, from that standpoint.”

How can it be?

The third game is usually the last game you will see your starters play any significant time.....any game planning? I seriously doubt it, outside of executing plays they worked on in practice....this may be the last game, guys on the bubble may get a shot against the other team's #1's....

Why would any team gameplan and give anything away for week 1?
well

duh.
If you think about it...
shabu : 8/23/2016 12:25 pm : link
Pre-season is the only time these teams have to go up against real competition and work on things they are maybe trying to improve in and/or see what guys have who are on the bubble to make team, or roster order etc.
I think he means gameplanning
UConn4523 : 8/23/2016 12:30 pm : link
as in, do whatever we can to win the game. Since the game is irrelevant, its used primarily to evaluate and get starters into game shape (cardio, execution, etc). Other than that, its completely irrelevant.
I've actaully..

And yet.........
The only preseason game that matters

is the fourth one. You get to see those bubble guys perform when they're fighting for a chance.

Lol yea seriously. It's stunningly hilarious.
Do people care more because its the Jets?
MetsAreBack : 8/23/2016 1:45 pm : link

I often wondered why we play these guys the 3rd game every preseason. It makes sense to play them every year as the Texans/Cowboys, Eagles/Steelers, Ravens/Skins, etc. do... but we seem to be the only geographic rivalry that plays this "most important" starter preseason game every year.

You'd think at the least we'd alternate with the Pats (always the 4th game) every few years.

What gets me is that McAdoo has said he wouldn't disclose who is calling the plays to keep a tactical advantage, but yet some of our resident geniuses expect to see him open up the playbook in preseason.
The comments on the play calling were the best

I don't think it was any more or less important long ago than it is today. It's always been a preseason game and the meaning of the preseason hasn't changed. The only difference I can think of is that in the past there were teams that played their starters into the second half so they could have the feel of what it's like to go into the locker room for 12 minutes and then have to come out and play again. I'm not sure how many teams still do that.
Unfortunately for Giants, it's the Jets annual Super Bowl

Every year I see Simms getting creamed by Klecko.
The only playcalling I didn't get was
SwirlingEddie : 8/23/2016 3:27 pm : link
the give-up shotgun handoff on 3rd and a mile. What do we gain practice or evaluation-wise by running that? Wouldn't it be better to try out a deep passing play for the first down in such a situation for the experience? Why waste a precious snap running a give-up play?
sure we've got more Lombardi's
Ron Johnson : 8/23/2016 3:28 pm : link

but who's got more Snoopy's?
wonder why they even have pre season games in first place..
micky : 8/23/2016 3:30 pm : link
afterall, it has no bearing as to reg season. Just practice and scrimmage ..the NFL makes enough $$

Perfect.
Simply: In preseason, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole
Marty in Albany : 8/23/2016 4:02 pm : link
Preseason is not practice. Preseason is evaluation under pressure for each of the 90 guys on the squad. You are looking at the players as individuals, not at the results of the team as a whole.

You guys are joking, however I wonder how this preseason will influence or not the decision on who should handle play calling. I know Sheridan handled the first game. The results were, Nassib melted down in epic fashion.

Under normal circumstances I would pay zero attention to these things, but McAdoo himself said play calling responsibility were still undetermined/undecided. So how do you evaluate an underlying's play calling prowess, under conditions where the team is deliberately trying to hide the full extent of their playbook?
Sheridan has been gone for years..

Because run blocking on a draw play is important?

and let a Rex Ryan defense pin their ears back on 3rd and long? I'd bet that our real offense will use the passing game to open up the running game and put us in more manageable down and distance.
