NGT: Josh Norman is a Dumpster Fire

Anando : 8/23/2016 11:30 am
From his new ESPN magazine interview, some select highlights:

Quote:
Norman also said he's the "best cornerback on Earth" and asked when New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. would "grow up."

Quote:
He told The Magazine that he felt constrained in Carolina, that he was asked to cut down on his trash talk but wouldn't because "I'm not a fake."

He said the team's conservative nature made him expendable.

"They kind of shunned me," he said. "They turned down a lot of stuff for me, interviews, sponsorship deals, stuff I didn't even know about. They wanted it to be about the two main guys, Cam [Newton] and Luke [Kuechly]."

Quote:
In Washington, he said he thinks he can "grow."

"...[I]t feels like everybody can say whatever they want," he said. "It's a free-flowing kind of place. It's like going from a dictatorship to freedom."

Thanks Dan!
i'd love to know what he means
UConn4523 : 8/23/2016 11:32 am : link
by Carolina holding him back on the field. You sucked in M2M, they stuck you in zone. Keep up the talking though, you are playing in the right place.
Yeah..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/23/2016 11:33 am : link
the Panthers are really conservative in their approach to allowing players carry baseball bats on the field and letting the QB act like a clown.

I love this - shows that Norman is never going to be the man at fault.

LOL. What a toolbag.
ironic
PaulBlakeTSU : 8/23/2016 11:33 am : link
that he's saying that Carolina constrained him given that the Carolina defense was the biggest reason for his breakout success.
Holy shit
AP in Halfmoon : 8/23/2016 11:33 am : link
he's a disaster waiting to happen. It would be fun to see a poll on what his teammates think about him.
He's probably only..

the 3rd best CB in the division.

And I'm being serious. People don't realize how he was nearly released due to his struggles in man coverage.
I hope Beckham

Have heard this before, hope its true.
Just remember...
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/23/2016 11:38 am : link
Norman was the guy covering Ramses Barden....

Quote:
During his second season, despite a strong preseason where he led the preseason in interceptions, Norman only played in seven games and was inactive for five more. He fell behind veterans Captain Munnerlyn, Drayton Florence as well as rookie UDFA Melvin White on the depth chart. The Panthers ascended to become the league's second-best defense, finishing first in the NFL with 60 sacks in 2013, second in points per game, and third in DVOA team defense
From what I know of him
mrvax : 8/23/2016 11:40 am : link
he's only had one good year. 2015. The skins must only allow him to play zone. It will be a real dumpster fire when he gets his ass burned by Dez, Jackson and Odell.

I know the Giants overpaid for Jenkins but the Skins really shat themselves for what they paid for this creep.
Holding him back from endorsement deals?
barens : 8/23/2016 11:42 am : link
I'm pretty sure company's don't go through the team to get endorsement from player.
'Dumpster Fire' is a stretch..
ATL_Giants : 8/23/2016 11:42 am : link
Sounds like a poorly parented teenager to me.

But if he hasn't broken NFL rules, committed any crimes or caused locker-room problems... then he's just a loud mouth.

Probably weekly radio appearances, local tv deals, etc
I mentioned..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/23/2016 11:48 am : link
quite a few times that he wasn't liked by his teammates. After he went after Cam last year in practice, he pissed off some veterans, and the way he trash talked during the week didn't sit well with Thomas Davis or Luke. And yet he still did it - just imagine how insufferable he'll be in Washington with nobody to reign him in?

When he wasn't resigned, Gettleman and Rivera's comments were telling. They didn't think he was a worthy investment:

Quote:
Said Gettleman in a statement provided by the Panthers: “After a number of conversations with Josh’s agent, we realized that a long-term deal was not attainable. We have decided to rescind the franchise tag, freeing Josh to immediately become a UFA. We thank Josh for all his contributions and truly wish him well.”

Gettleman is a huge proponent of building the front 7 and letting the DB's walk, just like he did with Captain Munnerlyn and Mike Mitchell. Norman's decision was probably easier than Munnerlyn's to be honest.
ODB..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/23/2016 11:51 am : link
in 2013 Norman fell to 3rd on the depth chart and there were rumors he'd be released. He really was saved by injuries and the team deciding not to resign Munnerlyn or Florence. Then he had a good camp in 2014 under the new scheme where he was placed in zone coverage.
He reminds me of Broken Matt Hardy

Here's a list of the guys he has to cover this year...

Antonio Brown
Dez Bryant 2x
Odell Beckham Jr. 2x
Corey Coleman
Steve Smith Sr.
Jordan Matthews 2x
Golden Tate/Marvin Jones
AJ Green
Stefon Diggs
Jordy Nelson/Randall Cobb
Michael Floyd
Kelvin Bejamin
Alshon Jeffery

I got my popcorn ready. This boy is going to get worked.
I hope they put him on opposing #1 WRs
giants#1 : 8/23/2016 12:20 pm : link
but some DCs prefer to have their CBs always stick to one side of the field and others sometimes choose to put their "shutdown" CB on the #2 WR and then shade coverage to the #1. If they leave Norman m2m against that group though, he's going to get torched.
I'm a bit confused
B in ALB : 8/23/2016 12:22 pm : link
by ESPN offering this guy some sort of extended interview while he ate lunch and now a magazine cover/story. He had one pretty good year - mainly due to his front 7 - and otherwise has been mediocre at best. I mean, Ramses Barden torched his ass for over 100 yards. Ramses Barden.

Why all of a sudden is he being lauded as one of the best in the game without really doing anything? Why is the spotlight on him? He's not particularly charismatic or charming. Doesn't seem to possess the gift of gab or say anything particularly interesting regarding the game. And in between bites of his lunch I heard absolutely nothing of note - he was boring.

Let's say Odell didn't bash his skull in and they didn't battle like idiots that day. Are we still talking about Josh fuckin Norman?

Was Gettleman still part of the FO then? If so, does he blame the Giants for Carolina rescinding his tag?

Yup, it was Gettleman's last year here. He whines about the Panthers as well which I believe the OP quoted. Claiming they "shunned" him, etc.
Norman..

"The GM?" Norman says of Gettleman. "He has no ties to me. He didn't bring me in. I had been there five years, busting my tail, giving it everything I had. I was blue-collar to the core. And they talk so much about this being a family deal -- well, dang, you could have at least let me know. You want to be a family, but honestly, is this a family way of doing things?"

In fairness i'm having a hard time getting too worked up about his ranking or play in 2012-2013. Guys "get it" after a few years all the time. It'd be like a hockey analyst giving Anton Stralman shit for his early career.

I'm hopeful Norman will suck in Washington given less talent around him, but he's a better player today than he was early on.
If Beckham
ryanmkeane : 8/23/2016 1:42 pm : link
holds onto that TD he finishes with 150 and 2 TD against "the best CB on earth"

I have a feeling his first game against the Giants and Odell will be like another Chappelle Show installment of "When Keeping it Real Goes Bad"
Also the play
ryanmkeane : 8/23/2016 1:43 pm : link
that Beckham absolutely smoked him on a double move - but Eli's arm got hit at the last second. That was a TD as well.
Josh Norman CB
Blitzem : 8/23/2016 3:02 pm : link
Don't like his words or antics on the field but he is a top-flight corner and teamed with Breeland it makes an imposing pass D and gives Skins an edge. I thought Malcolm Butler played OBJ best last year and JN 2d best.
Name recognition and face recognition mean millions of dollars
Marty in Albany : 8/23/2016 3:42 pm : link
to an athlete above what he earns from the team. That's how you get to work for ESPN after you stop playing.

What he says is designed to get attention and to sell magazines. I'm guessing that half the players in the League read that stuff and wish that they had that gig.

Rivalries and petty feuds between rivals sell tickets too, so I don't expect any owner to complain or tell a player to cool it.
But..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/23/2016 4:01 pm : link
is he??

Quote:

The times he had to play man, his stats were much worse than otherwise. He was so valuable that the Panthers took the tender off the table.

I'd rather have a Norman who thinks he's great because when he shows that he isn't close to being the best, it is going to be a mental issue as well as anything else.

People close to the Panthers organization fully believe he's a product of the system. Others are starting to say the same thing.
Question
nyjuggernaut2 : 8/23/2016 4:13 pm : link
Doesn't putting out a hit on another NFL player warrant a suspension?

With the NFL being super protective of the players anymore, I just can't see them turning The other cheek when a guy comes out and says "they will have to put a bubble around Odell because there is a hit out on him."
This reminds me of when Nnamdi Asomugha went from Oakland...
Milton : 8/23/2016 4:22 pm : link
...to the Eagles and fell off a cliff. The only difference was Asomugha was a good guy and Norman is a jerk. So it will be even more satisfying.

Well if our O-line does not improve, he won't have to work too hard when playing the Giants. Maybe covering a guy for 1.5 seconds because that is how long it will take for their pass rush to get to Eli
Hasn't he been getting torched in

I really hope Odell goes all STFU on him on September 25th.

Norman thought he was big time because he "shut down" DT in the Super Bowl (like Peyton was able to even throw the ball downfield) and DT responded by posting a picture of his ring saying "Where's yours fella?"

read carefully...

Let's hope OBJ turns Norman's 15 minutes of fame into 50 million $ of mistakes by the Skins.

Personally I think Odell and Eli are gonna toast this guy like an economy sized bag of Stay Puft marshmallows...

You just know what Eli must think of an asdclown like Norman... He spots Norman one on one vs Odell with minimal OTT help, he's gonna work him like a rented mule, as they say down south.
This fugazi is going to get exposed this year

the first month he's going to go up against Antonio Brown, Dez Bryant, Beckham to open up the first 3 games. We'll see how good the 'best corner on the planet' really is.
Good for him that Snyder was willing to pay for that one year.

fans tend to think everything is a pattern so I get the panic about him in part, but I wasn't worried then and not worried now. Listening to him talk to Francesa sold me even further. He admitted handling it poorly, and that he needs to do a better job of staying focused at all times. What more can you ask for?
