Can we actually win a damn opening game?

ryanmkeane : 8/23/2016 3:40 pm
Never the smartest thing to look ahead but it appears the opening 5 weeks is the hardest stretch of our schedule. Can we for ONCE set the tone on the opening couple drives in week 1? Getting past Dallas would stay away from panic mode in the opening weeks of the season - I think it would be great for morale to go in there and get a W. Something feels a little different this time around especially with the defense...I say it's a 33-24 opening day win.
Lost 5 straight openers I believe.

Haven't been 2 games over .500 at any point in a season since ending 9-7 in 2012. It's been rough.
It would be great, but it is just one game. We lost the opening game
Marty in Albany : 8/23/2016 3:51 pm : link
at Dallas and then we only lost one more game all year. Of course that was in 1986 and we had a pretty good team then. Still, we lost on opening day.

This year there have been a lot of changes and it may take a while for the team to settle down. It will be a challenge for the team and especially for McAdoo to stay the course.
We definitely need to open

AT Dallas more often. Let's start there?
It's going to be very tough

May take awhile for them to get comfortable and get going. May take a few games or possibly mid season, barring injuries (which happens)to get their feet under them.
I think Dallas is a good matchup
BillT : 8/23/2016 3:59 pm : link
Just the team I'd order for an opening game. A team without the defensive front 7 talent to expose our OL. Very average DBs (if that) to match up with our WR. On D I think this DL will be a good match for their OL. We can contain the run enough to make them pass block where our DL is better than their OL. Also, our DBs are better than their receivers.
at this point I don't see the logic

in predicting a win, but it sure would be nice!

the problem with saying "it's just one game" is that if you take a look at the last 4 seasons, the first game has been a pretty good indicator of what was to come.

Week 1 2012 - Big pass plays allowed vs. Dallas

It continued the rest of the year. They could never get a hold of it.

Week 1 2013 - 6 Turnovers in Dallas

They would go on to turn in over 44 times and in a variety of mind blowing ways. First play of the season was an INT on a screen pass.

Week 1 2014 - Big pass plays allowed vs Detroit

4 plays into the season, the defense is passing off Megatron to air and 60 yards later he's in the end zone. It started that night a few times and never stopped that season.

Week 1 2015 - End of game craziness

From Opening night in Dallas where they lost that game the way they did became a theme of them losing late the whole year.

One time here to open the year, let's stop this cycle and get off on a positive note. Get a win in Dallas and come home the next week with all of us there at the tailgate outside the stadium where all us will be excited about the possibility of starting the season 2-0 and have real optimism for the season.

It sure beats fearing AGAIN that we may be going 0-2 again if we don't win at home that next game and never really gain firm control of the season from the outset and instead, have to fight uphill just to get back to even.

I think it's a bad week 1 matchup actually, especially as the game goes on. Their DL may be depleted but I imagine our OL will still be operating like headless chickens in the season's first game. I foresee a lot of short possessions that will put our D on the field frequently. Their OL, Elliott and Morris should then feast.
I hate opening every year against Dallas
Paulie Walnuts : 8/23/2016 4:09 pm : link
we usually lose in front of a national audience
it puts us immediately behind in the division and we never seem to get out of that hole

we also seem to get very key injuries in those games

fuck Dallas

give Me opening against Cleveland

Do you remember watch a team recently that couldn't rush the passer and what offenses did to that team. Dallas, on paper, has less pass rushing talent than the 2015 Giants team. The Giants OL is man for man a better unit.

Giants something like 0-8 in opening games against the Cowboys. That is what made last year's opening day loss so disgusting. It still stings.

Maybe it's blind hope, but I think this is the year the Giants break that streak.
It doesn't matter if WE look ahead
ANGPASS : 8/23/2016 4:25 pm : link
The players should look ahead. It is a fun aspect of being a fan. But I totally agree. Set a tone out of the gate. I know it is one game, but this , to me, if arguably our most important game because of what a win can do for this team on week one in Dallas. It would show that this is a different team.

So you would rather NOT go against a depleted front 7 when our OL is not looking good? I am confused how that is a bad matchup? Would certainly rather go against that defense first over Philly or Washington.

In 2009, the Giants started with 5 straight wins. The 2nd game was at the new AT&T Stadium. Giants won 33-31. I don't know the opening day stats though.

0-7 to be exact

1965 - DAL 31, NYG 2
1986 - DAL 31, NYG 28
1995 - DAL 35, NYG 0
2007 - DAL 45, NYG 35
2012 - DAL 24, NYG 17
2013 - DAL 36, NYG 31
2015 - DAL 27, NYG 26
They can't even seem to win any pre season games.....

It wouldn't surprise me to see them begin the season with a loss. That disaster last week still has me pissed off!

Maybe, but if your expecting Eli to have 3-4 seconds per play all game and our RB's to routinely find huge holes to run through, I think you'll be disappointed.

I didn't say anything like that. Just think it's a good matchup.

Opening in Dallas is about as good a way to open a season as possible. Lose and you have all season to make up for it. Win and you have a shot to go for the sweep at home.

It's too bad that the Giants have been too shitty to take advantage of this gift.
It always seems like...
EricJ : 8/23/2016 5:53 pm : link
our first game looks like our 5th pre-season game and that our opposition is better prepared to start the season
We should have won last year

if it wasn't for that screwed up goal-line series of events!
It's all on our defensive line. They've got to stop their run game

Yes. I usually feel the team is "sloppy" for at least the first game.

it's not the first game that's important it's winning the season that's important

I don't know. I'm watching the Dallas/Miami replay, and that Dallas starting O-line is dominating a very good Miami D-line
Feeling pretty pessimistic about that game unfortunately...

Which likely sets up a must win almost vs the saints of all teams the next week - a team no giants fan wants to see despite being in somewhat of a rebuild mode.
