Cruz looking better than ever...

adamg : 8/23/2016 4:28 pm
today according to Pat and Art on twitter...

"huge step back towards return" and "best he's looked all offseason" were said by Pat

They are hyping him up

Roger Lewis is the favorite for WR#6

He's made huge catches today, building on his impressive performances.

King is a lock for #7 as well.

I'm glad Lewis has some separation from the pack. Younger and taller than most of those guys. Should be exciting to see if he can contribute in the season this year.

What trade? Browns have been pretty adamant about not trading him...

Did an insider say anything about a potential trade?

I seriously doubt he is looking "better than ever."

But I'll take him at 90 percent.

Here is video...

Yeah I'm sure he's in 2011 form.
Victor in CT : 8/23/2016 4:34 pm : link
You must mean better than he has this training camp. Which has to be true since he hasn't participated in 2 weeks.

Not buying until he actually plays in a game, makes a few plays and comes out uninjured.

better than ever=

better than he's been purported to be in the last two weeks.

The best he's looked in training camp in this year.

As in, he looks like a starter again.

I don't know what would be the clue that he's in 2011/old Cruz form. I don't thing we'll really know that if/when he makes it to the season.

Frankly, I don't understand the nitpick about that line, but BBI strikes again...

According to the beat writers, White isn't near the King/Lewis level... so yes.

I'd be surprised if
giants#1 : 8/23/2016 4:50 pm : link
they keep 7 WRs, so if Lewis is #6 and King #7, White is a major long shot at this point. Though possible practice squad guy since I don't think King is eligible.
Now the next hurdle
gmen9892 : 8/23/2016 4:51 pm : link
Is getting back out there tomorrow and doing the same thing again. Then doing it Saturday through a whole game (or for as long as the starters are out there).
They'll likely only
section125 : 8/23/2016 4:52 pm : link
keep 6. Can't see 7 WR. They'll need at least 3 TEs.

LOL. About a month ago it was White that was better than ever and making moves to be the 4th receiver. I guess it week to week or even day to day with these rankings.

I'd be happy if Cruz can go 2-3 series on Saturday and wouldn't push him more than that. Or 12-15 snaps depending on how they are rotating the WRs. No need to throw a 'full' workload on him immediately.

I'm tired of hoping for his return...

To be fair that was before camp and before Lewis even saw any reps. It has been consistently King/Lewis as the 6/7 in the past three weeks...

Me too. I was feeling pessimistic after the reports on his groin. Sounds like we just have to wait and see. Sounds like he's got potential still if he can handle the grind.

I think he'll get a lot more work than that. They have to know now if he's ready for the season. There is no more time. I think a half is minimum and you could see him out there in the 2nd half, too.

My 5 Victor Cruz observations from today: 1) This was his biggest workload of the summer. The #Giants really threw him into the deep end

Jordan Raanan ‏@JordanRaanan 11m11 minutes ago

2) Eli Manning looked at Cruz more in this one practice than he did in the first two weeks #Giants

Jordan Raanan ‏@JordanRaanan 9m9 minutes ago

3) Cruz looked pretty good making cuts. One in particular where he ran a quick dig route vs. Donte Deayon stood out #Giants

Jordan Raanan ‏@JordanRaanan 7m7 minutes ago

4) Cruz didn't appear overly explosive. Still work to be done there. Joe Powell ran step for step for him downfield on one play #Giants

Jordan Raanan ‏@JordanRaanan 6m6 minutes ago

5) It was a very positive step in the right direction. Now need to see Cruz's legs hold up tomorrow and through the week. #Giants

We need Cruz to be effective and healthy for this season. Don't let anyone kid you, this offense is prolific if he is a stud again inside getting us 3rd down conversions and such.

I think it's the natural contrarian-ness of the BBI community that likes to shit on any hope of good news.

They can't handle the nuance of progress without performance or hope without expectation.
LOL..

If he comes back from all these injuries and puts up big numbers and makes big plays again he's going to have to start doing the bachata or something.

Everyone who had him off the team a week ago. Thus the seemingly superlative description I gave.

Production can't be measured at this point, geniuses of BBI, but news of health and speed are indicators of potential. And that was good today.
Sadly I think it's just going to be one injury after another now..
Shockwave : 8/24/2016 9:21 am : link
Just watch, he will come back and play at a good level for 2-3 weeks then will have a setback that will linger all season. The giants will say he is making progress all season and will never play a down again. Just enough to keep our hopes up.

I seriously doubt...
BillKo : 8/24/2016 9:25 am : link
we are keeping seven WRs.
Really happy to hear this
Bramton1 : 8/24/2016 9:32 am : link
He had seven catches in team drills yesterday, which I believe is four more than he registered in all of training camp prior to yesterday. Cornerback Donte Deayon was amazed how quick Cruz came off the line.

Quote:
"He's quick," said Deayon, an undrafted rookie out of Boise State. "I didn't think he'd be that quick off the line right now. But he came off the line real quick and he got me. ... He shook and he shot across the field. He has his step back, he's quick and he's a veteran, so he knows his game."

Of course, before we get too excited, let us...

1. Remember that he juked out an undrafted rookie. Big different between Deayon and Sherman (or even Deayon and Norman).

2. How are his legs today?

3. Does he look against the Jets?

4. How does he look in the regular season?

re. Lewis, King, White and
ColHowPepper : 8/24/2016 10:57 am : link
the first two rated as 6th and 7th WRs: aside from being drafted, in the 6th, is Davis a lock as the 5th?

Lewis on Saturday: the OL and the offense generally were a shit show so it was hard to get a read on player performance, but sort of agree with the comment above that Lewis didn't exactly distinguish himself, separation, etc., + the drop, albeit it was tight coverage and I wondered at the time whether the DB had made a good play and was able to stick his hand in Lewis' chest as he began to secure the ball...would have been bang, bang.
I think it's safe to say that Geremy Davis is a lock at this point.
Klaatu : 8/24/2016 11:16 am : link
He's received nothing but praise since the offseason progroma/training camp began, and he's been running with the ones far more often than not. Unless his hamstring injury becomes a chronic thing, or he completely stinks up the joint in the next two preseason games, I figure he'll make the final 53.

As for who else will stick at WR, your guess is as good as mine. I don't think anyone else has really distinguished themselves enough to project them to making the team, although they've all had their moments in practice. The next two weeks will be very telling (no great insight, I know).

Personally, I'm hoping that Darius Powe makes the cut. I started a thread about him a while back, so if he makes it I can link to it and say, "I told you so, pinheads!"
Davis, Lewis, Powe, etc.
ColHowPepper : 8/24/2016 12:15 pm : link
About Davis I suspect you're going to be proven correct: he's not made any major gaffes, is farther along in BM's offensive scheme than any of his competitors because of the additional year, and he seems right in the mix as far as talent goes, which is also to say that, from what I've seen, he's not head and shoulders above.

The competition at WR is a bitch so far this camp and ex. season because of the numbers, how no one is so clearly ahead of the others, and how few looks they've had in the games; as BM said in his remarks this week, yeah, you have to look at the players' performance in the games for a truer read, practice field stuff is not enough. And the OL and QBs (certainly the backups, and Eli has been sort of pedestrian in his one quarter of play) are not helping in terms of giving them opportunities to shine or stink. A lot of murky here.
I picked up on that too

WR Victor Cruz had another solid day of practice. He caught passes on his first three snaps of live team drills. He also caught a touchdown pass in a red zone drill later in practice. Cruz appears on pace to play against the Jets on Saturday.
