FF 8-24

superspynyg : 8/24/2016 9:10 am
I have at least 3 drafts this weekend (2 for me and 1 for my wife who is in a work league).

I did a mock draft for a 10 team standard with 2wr/2rb/1flex. If I got this team I would do cartwheels.

QB Luck, Dalton
RB Gurley, Charles, Langford, Forsett, Ware (handcuff)
WR Jeffrey, Moncrief, Fitzgerald, Crabtree
TE Olsen, Thomas
K Tucker
DEF Carolina.

I think by now we all have the guys that we expect to draft at least in the top few rounds. All I can do is wait for the action.

Rd 1 level guy: David Johnson. No history, good backup. QB could go down easy.

Rd1/2: DeAndre Hopkins. Great talent, bad QB.

Rd 3: Keenan Allen: Plagued with inconsistency, injuries. Never put it together.

Eddie Lacy: Never liked him or their RB for FF. Rodgers loves to throw, especially on goalline.

Mark Ingram: Never liked RB's on the saints. They rotate too much.

Doug Baldwin: I just can't justify taking a WR in that offense.

There are a few.

My thinking on DJ is that he could have an absolutely monster year and finish as the RB1 but I still feel like there's a bit of risk just in the sense that his sample size as a top tier RB is pretty small. Because of my draft slots in each league I am in, I essentially have no chance of drafting him so I haven't spent too much time thinking about whether I'd take him or not.. but I really prefer not to have any "doubt" about my first round pick outside of them staying healthy for 16 games. DJ would make me slightly uneasy but I'm leaning more towards him having a great year than a disappointing one. Gurley and AP are "safer" but I think Johnson has a pretty good chance of out-producing both. I think if push came to shove, I would probably draft him anywhere in the 4-10 range.

I think Hopkins proved that his QB situation didn't matter much.. I think he'll have a similar year. Probably 100 receptions.. maybe a small decrease in TD's. Should still be a safe bet to start every week as a WR1.

I really think Allen will be a PPR machine this year. A kidney injury isn't something that worries me as far as lingering effects or increasing the liklihood of re-injury. He was a target monster last year before he got hurt and with Gates really getting up there in age, I think Rivers is going to force feed him every week.

I know we've disagreed on Lacy.. but I like him late in the 3rd round. I think he's going to have a year on par with his first two. He's just such a load to bring down and Rodgers trusts him in the pass game. He dumps it off to him in the flat a lot when protections break down and he can't get downfield.

I am with you on Baldwin. The TD production was unsustainable. I'd rather have Lockett a few rounds later. I think the value will be better.
I actually drafted Lacy in rd 4(early rd 4)
Keith : 8/24/2016 12:29 pm : link
of my last mock, it felt dirty, but that's pretty good value.

Early 4th is great value on Lacy. I would run to pick him there and not even think twice.

I am in a 12 team PPR league where we keep one player. I am keeping Le'Veon Bell basically because he was the only player worth keeping.

I have the first pick. Injuries killed me last year but was able to win the toilet bowl. Hopkins tops the list on non-keepers. I was planning on taking Elliot but the commissioner just asked me how I felt about changing up the keeper rule where you can only keep a player drafted after the 7th round. If that is the case then Hopkins is definitely my pick.

However, Green and Gronk are also available. What do you guys think? I actually really like Green this year but I have to take Hopkins, right?

Not sure I get it. If you can only keep a player drafted after the 7th round and you have 1st pick, how are AB, Beckham, Julio Jones now not available to you at #1?
I need to pick up a TE for 4 weeks
Sonic Youth : 8/24/2016 1:24 pm : link
as I have Eifert and he'll be out for those weeks.

I spent my last pick on ASJ but it appears he's in a timeshare. Any TEs you guys would recommend I drop him for? Charles Clay and Donnell are both FAs. Not too hot on Donnell since I think Tye will get snaps, but I'm unsure as to whether I should cut ASJ for Clay.

Clay has a higher floor and is more of a safe play while Eifert is out, but ASJ has big time potential IMO and has more upside.

What do you guys think?
Elliot over Gronk and Green?
Keith : 8/24/2016 1:27 pm : link
Am I understanding that right? I'd rank them:

Gronk
Green

Elliot

I'm not taking the chance on a rookie who has done nothing when he has talent behind him. They have McFadden and Morris who will get touches. Elliot has done nothing to be in the class of Gronk and Green. I pray someone drafts him before my 9th pick.

We keep one player as of now. They want to change the keeper rule. That wouldn't go in effect until next year.

Know much about football. It's the weirdest lineup I've seen.
Starters:
2QB
3WR
3RB
1 flex
1 te
1 k
1 def

10 person snake draft. 4pts for throwing td.

Any advice on how to try to fill the lineup?

If I took Elliot it would be under the assumption that I can keep him for next year. Yes, I understand that most people would take other over him but I like to look long term. Is it risky for me to take him essentially at 13 overall? Yes but I don't trust Bell long term and I can see Elliot being a top pick next year like Gurley and DJ currently are now.

I had a 14 team league that drafted WAY too early, where I had the 13th pick. I used the exact same thought process to pass on Elliot for Ingram with my second rd pick (16 overall...plus I took Dez in rd 1 and didn't want to hitch my wagon to one offense)... and I immediately regretted it. Ingram should be fine but I think if you get Elliot at 13, you should take a shot on him based on projects.

I know Morris is a very good back and McFadden is capable, but based on the hype, it seems the Cowboys are going to do everything to make Elliot their starting RB.

I also was concerned about volume, as I don't know if he'll be the true bellcow that Ingram has been. But after taking Ingram, that pick has been eating at me, as if I feel that I made the wrong choice.

Elliott went #1 overall in my keeper league where we keep 2 players and the available players included Julio Jones, Lamar Miller, Cam Newton, Eddie Lacy, Gronk, and others.

Easier decision I guess with less options, but still Julio Jones is better than Green, Gronk, or Hopkins.

Available TEs:
Richard Rodgers
Charles Clay
Owen Daniels
Crocket Gillmore
Brent Celek
Vance MacDonald
Clife Walford
Vernon Davis
Hunter Henry
Jace Amaro
Jesse James (intriguing pick)
Tyler Higbee
austin Hooper

I'm thinking James, Clay, Donnell, or maybe Amaro. But mostly Clay or Donnell. James intrigues me a lot though if Ladarius Green will be out for a long time. He might be worth the shot.
Robbie?
pjcas18 : 8/24/2016 1:49 pm : link
or someone was talking up Higbee on here maybe not to start day 1, but as a late round pick so not sure he helps you.

A Steelers fan in my draft took Jesse James and was thrilled to get him in round 16 or whenever.

otherwise you're rolling the dice. Donnell, if he makes the team might be worth it, since he's still getting red zone targets at least, but I think Tye passes him completely at some point this year if not week 1.

Jets TE's had like 3 catches all of last year. I wouldn't be too interested in Amaro

Clay easily tops the list with Hunter as a possible wildcard depending on how they use him. But, like pj pointed out, keep an eye on Higbee.

Do I keep bringing up Julio?

I mentioned him in the last post to show that in my keeper league Elliott went #1 and Julio was available.

Just to show that how some people in other leagues value Elliott immensely. I never said he was available to you, only that he was better than your available options and people (at least one) in my league took Elliott ahead of him.

Sorry if that was confusing.

Have I brought him up in any other way?

Yeah, that is why he isn't in the conversation for me if we change the keeper rule. If we change it then I would not be able to keep him. If we keep it the same where you can keep anybody then he jumps to the top of the list. If I took Elliot I would definitely be putting myself behind the eight ball with Bell who is suspended for 3 games and a rookie RB so chances of me truly competing would be less. But I look at it like this, Bell is very risky himself and I am not thrilled with him as my keeper. I tried trading him for Beckham and DJ. Neither owner wanted to even think about it and that was before the suspension came out. I get it with those two players but a couple of days later news broke about his possible suspension and that just shut down all trade talks. In a one keeper league he worries me. I also worry that I am going to get off to a slow start as well which is why Elliot made more sense to me by thinking long term.

This league is also very deep so every team starts questionable players. We start 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, and a flex on top of a K and D. With byes and injuries it becomes a shitshow. lol.

Here is some recent news on ASJ:
Quote:
Wed, Aug 24

Coach Dirk Koetter praised Austin Seferian-Jenkins' work ethic over the past couple weeks.

Advice: After opening camp as the clear No. 2 to Cameron Brate, ASJ has gained the ground back and is splitting first-team reps with Brate. "Austin's worked his way right back in there," Koetter said. "And when he got moved down the depth chart all you can ask a player when he gets moved down is that he competes and does better and tries to get back up there and he's done that." It was a motivational tactic by Koetter, and it's paid off. ASJ is a high-upside late-round flier.

Gotcha. I thought you were bringing him up as an option for me. I think you posted him twice. No big deal. I thought it was funny. I agree with you. Elliot is very risky. We have no idea if Dallas will have Elliot as the bell cow but it is just automatically assumed he will be. I thought Morris looked decent behind the OL and rookies usually run into a wall. So, I am fully aware that there is a downside with Elliot compared to some of the other players available. I don't know if I want the keeper rule changed. On one hand I would be more competitive this year if it does change. However, having the potential of Elliot as a keeper would be nice too. To totally different situations and we will not know the outcome of this until right before we draft. I hate that.
FF player phobia

Sometimes, you can't fight the #s. My only FF phobia is with Doug Martin as he single hanledly ruined our FF team his sophomore year. No injury, no nothing except he totally bit that year as our #1 pick - LOL. The pain.

As far as Lacy is concerned, he has had 2 down years, last year almost being cut. But you have to follow this years hype with him coming in in shape and all. Also, the GB offense isn't as pass happy as it once was without a TE.

The only reason I like Ingram is that he beat us twice last year with huge games. If NO didn't suck so bad, his #s would look gaudy. He just has to stay healthy.

robbieballs2003 : 8/24/2016 2:59 pm : link
Am I crazy for liking Green more than Hopkins? They are both great players but Hopkins had like 190 targets last year. I cannot see that being repeated which means he would need to have more explosive plays to be just as good as last year.

I can see Green's targets increasing amd he is easily their main target. Eifert seems like he is always injured. I think I like Greem more than Hopkins this year.

Another guy that I think isn't getting enough talk is Allen Robinson. I would definitely take Robinson over Dez and Nelson in drafts.

What other "down year" did Lacy have besides last season? His first 2 seasons he was very good. He started slow in 2014 but had a very strong finish.

both have great years.

When Hopkins was the only option with a bad QB he was practically unstoppable I don't see why having a couple rookie WR's and a new RB should change that substantially.

Plus, Green should get more targets not just because Eifert is injured, but because Jones and Sanu are gone.

he's got guys like Brandon LaFell and Brandon Tate in his depth chart.

Bengals have a favorable SOS too.

I don't think I'd wager on either one outproducing the other, but Hopkins so far has a higher ADP than Green, but I'd be happy with either.

I wasn't that high on him in the draft but he has played well so far for Houston and I liked what I saw in the last preseason game from him. I have a hard time drafting the second WR on Houston but I am more open to drafting him now.

What do you think is a realistic expectation for Fuller this year opposite Hopkins?

Pure guess here, but once Fuller definitely wins the starting job I'll be more comfortable - and I think he will, but I think 50 catches 600 yards and 4 TD's would be well within my expectations.

What other "down year" did Lacy have besides last season? His first 2 seasons he was very good. He started slow in 2014 but had a very strong finish.

Yeah what down year did Lacy have year 2? He had a 200 yard and 2 TD improvement over his rookie season. By that rate Odell had a "down year" this past season.

I like Allen Robinson but I have 2 Penn state grads drafting before I do in the second round. Which kinda sucks because I was hyped about him in the NFL when they didn't think much of his pro chances.
The thing that's interesting about Ingram
Sonic Youth : 8/24/2016 4:10 pm : link
is that out of nowhere, the Saints started throwing him the football. This has a huge impact in PPR leagues.

Last year, he was entering the season with something like 25 catches since he'd been in the league. He had 50 in 12 games last year.

When you add in the fact that the only player behind him who could warrant touches is Spiller (and even that's arguable) coupled with his performance last year, I think he has a shot to really blow past expectations this year.

or maybe that's just what I'm telling myself to justify my reach in drafting him.
Green?

Sucked for me last year. It will be tough for me to pick him that high. I would pass.

I was really confused last offseason. I thought he would be a perfect get for Dallas. New Orleans never used him right. I actually wanted the Giants to get him. Then I saw him re-sign with NO for pretty cheap. I didn't get it. But after he was re-signed they started using him the way he should have been used and that was as a do-it-all back.
Any suggestions on

Auction style formats? Both of my leagues are that way now, I did well in both of them when we made the switch winning championships multiple years in both but the past few years my teams have struggled. I usually go the cheaper route and buy a bunch on middle tier players and sleepers instead of blowing all my money on 2-4 guys.

This year I am thinking of targeting 2 of the top 5 WR's and Gronk since there seems to be a wider gap between them and the middle tier guys at those positions. Thoughts?

Not sure how Green "sucked" for you last year. He had 1300 Yards and 10TDS even with his qb missing for four games.
I have one of those mental blocks for Ingram
Keith : 8/24/2016 5:07 pm : link
I know he was great last year, but I've always hated NO offenses for RB's. They rotate a ton. Maybe it'll be different now that Ingram took the next step, but they still scare me taking him so early. Again, I just think there are RB's available in rd's 5-6 that are right there with Ingram.

Assuming you have a $200 budget, you'll be spending 60 for Julio/AB/OBJ 50-55 for AJ/Hopkins
Throw in another 45 or so for Gronk - - that's leaving you really thin the rest of the way money wise.

I usually try to get at least 1 stud WR and 1 stud RB and fill out the rest with 'bargains' but you have to be patient to find them
Can someone explain how an auction draft works?
robbieballs2003 : 8/24/2016 5:58 pm : link
Are all players bid on at the same time? Do you go in order of ranking? Does this take place in one night like a draft or is this over days/weeks? How do owners bid and how do you know when the bidding is over?

When we did an auction, we went around the room each person proposed a name in any random order they wanted (you could be the first person to propose someone and say "Cameron Artis-Payne $2" for example) and a dollar amount and we went in a specified order around the room and each person passed or increased the bid in set increments until there was a winner. We stupidly allowed one pass and re-enter, meaning someone says for example Julio Jones $50, and I pass, if it comes back around to me I could re-enter over the current bid (one time).

I think online auctions might work the same. I've never done an online auction, only live.

It took 6 hours for a 12-team, 17 round auction.

Never again.

That sounds crazy. There is strategy there but to go through roughly 130 something players like that in one night is rough.

Here's how mine works.

We use ESPN. (10 teams, 0.5 PPR, 1 QB 6pt passing TDs, 3 WR + Flex. But that's not what you're asking).

We do the draft through ESPN. Players are bid upon one-by-one. The order is determined on the fly, by the managers. Each manager takes a turn nominating a player and making the opening bid. The player is awarded to the highest bidder when the bidding stops. Next manager nominates. Rinse and repeat.

We do the draft "live" at a bar with WiFi, but everyone uses a laptop or tablet. 2 reasons for this -- 1) over time people have moved or have other family shit going on, so we always have at least 1 or 2 drafting remotely. 2) the computer does all of the work and avoids a logistical nightmare of record keeping, auctioneering, and trying to maintain a baseline level of decorum.

It is a LOT of fun. I've always liked my league, but my interest has increased tenfold since we moved to auction 3 years ago.

Our draft is late Saturday afternoon. Can't wait.
As far as time,
bigbluehoya : 8/24/2016 6:12 pm : link
On average I'd say it has taken us about 1 hour longer than snake drafting.

All good with me when the beers are flowing and we're laughing and breaking each other's balls mercilessly.
