NFT: Mets and Cardinals Game 2/ Mets Talk 8/24

ZGiants98 : 8/24/2016 9:16 am
-Mets back in wild card race (sort of lol) 3.5 back

-deGrom VS Martinez tonight

-Niese to the DL (Good, finally some good news. lol)

-Yoenis Cespedes tells the Record’s Matt Ehalt he plans to honor all three years of his contract with the Mets. Still, columnist Bob Klapisch in the Record advises that the Mets be ready for the alternative. Is this possible?

-The Walkers had their baby

Mets need de Grom to be great along with Syndergaard to have a chance
Victor in CT : 8/24/2016 9:26 am : link
Mets also need to do whatever it takes to keep Cespedes here. Great to hear that he wants to honor the entire deal, but I wouldn't chance it. They are a different team with home. Offensively, they are schoolyard bullies with, sand kicked in the face wimps without. He's a legit hitter, not an all or none strikeout king like Bruce, AND he is a MUCH better outfielder than he gets credit for. And he thrives in the spotlight.
I want to see more of Ruggiano

Mets should

go to Cespedes tomorrow and add another year onto the deal and maybe give him another opt-out after 2 years. Give him a little extra incentive to commit to the team.
REALLY need Jake to step up here
gmen9892 : 8/24/2016 9:40 am : link
Dont like tomorrow's pitching matchup. Have to win 2 out of 3 here after taking last nights game. Martinez can be on and off, so heres to hoping we catch him on another one of his off nights.

Was there any more word on Yo's Quad after last night? Noticed him massaging and stretching it after he made a play in the 1st inning. Cohen and Co. were talking about it and seemed worried. Did anything else come of that? Was he asked about it after the game? Need him at 100% if they are going to make this run.
From what i've
Metnut : 8/24/2016 9:48 am : link
heard, there was no new issue with the quad. I think the SNY team was overreacting. He also ran pretty hard to beat out an infield single.
Gotta put Ces on ice

Before and after each game.

We need him for the next 40+ days
I would be absolutely stunned if Yo doesn't opt out.
Section331 : 8/24/2016 10:18 am : link
With the year he's having, it would be a mistake not to. I'd be thrilled to be wrong, but I don't see it. Mets should add some years to the back and of the deal in exchange for Yo voiding the opt out.

The team is finally healthy, so if they're going to get on a run, now is the time. Flores has to play every time we're facing a loogy.
If Cespedes honors the full contract it will be a heist
Eric on Li : 8/24/2016 10:25 am : link
it's still shocking that someone like the Giants didn't just give him 4 or 5 years this past offseason. No idea what teams were thinking. Same goes for some AL team with Murphy, with the number of positions he could play (not to mention DH) it's shocking nobody thought he was worth more than $36M - and i'm talking about pre-breakout Murphy (which was basically Eric Hosmer).
Yo is happy as a Met
spike : 8/24/2016 10:26 am : link
Maybe he will want to stay either way with a new or old contract
even Murphy didn't think he was worth more. I think Francesa
Victor in CT : 8/24/2016 10:31 am : link
makes a good point about that. If Murphy thought he was this good, he would have played for the $15.8 million this year and looked to FA for 2017. He's playing for $8 million this year. 8!!

If this is who Murphy has become it's a steal for Washington. If not and it's a freak season, he was smart to take this deal. I don't think this is who he is. He didn't morph into Rogers Hornsby. I think it's a freak season.

Im kind of in the middle. I think the work he did with Long did unlock a bit more power. Is he a wRC+ 150 hitter going forward? No. 125-130 wouldn't shock me though and that's well above his career averages.

Yeah, plus they had the ability to skip him completely with the off day too. Makes zero sense. Im just happy we got a W on a day Niese was expected to start and hopefully that's the end of it. They had to think maybe he would have some success working with Warthen again or something... Ugh.
Did they know about Neise's injury before the game?

He's had a knee issue all year I believe.
Yes
pjcas18 : 8/24/2016 11:25 am : link
there was some stupid comment from Terry Collins that Niese has a knee issue and he said it felt better when he started instead of coming out of the pen.

Niese commented on it too.

I'm no doctor or have any medical training, but based on the way they described it I had a very hard time believing that pitching, going to the dugout and coming back out and pitching multiple times would be better for that knee than pitching once and being done.

as it turned out, he never got to experience the in and out of the dugout as he only retired one batter, but it never made sense to me.
It's

Apparently Cespedes is still saying he is going to honor all 3 years of the Mets contract and not opt out.. I think he'd be nuts to do that and when push comes to shove, I think his agent will push him to opt out and tell him he's leaving a boatload of money on the table but it's ridiculously clear that he loves it here and he wants to be a Met. They need to just approach him now and tack on like 3 more years.. he'll absolutely take it. It would be crazy to even let it get to a point where he considers opting out at all.

Even if we can't take him at face value on honoring the contract, it's clear that he likes it here and that the Mets can get something done before he gets to FA.

But it's not the agent's call. If Cespedes actually wants to stay under the existing contract he can't do anything about it. His agent can try and talk him into a new contract with the Mets but when push comes to shove, Cespedes makes the decision. Didn't Cespedes have better $$ offers than the one he signed with Mets? I'm guessing his agent wanted him to go where the the bigger $$ was then. I get the sense Cespedes is his own man and will listen to options but make decisions based on what he wants to do and where he feels the most comfortable. If it's NY, a few million won't deter him.

I don't buy that for a minute

Great if it's true, but in this baseball economy he could very likely get a better deal and probably would deserve it.

Well, he's the one saying it.. it's not like it's speculation.

Quote:
When asked by The Record’s Matt Ehalt if he intended to honor all three years of his current $75 million contract, without opting out, Cespedes flatly said, “Yes.”

He said this when he signed the deal, too. He said he was going to stay for all 3 years.

I think he's crazy if he does it but it's pretty obvious that Cespedes isn't wired the same as everyone else. I think he's been looking for a real home since he came to the majors and that the fans here have embraced him in a way that he hadn't been embraced in Oakland, Boston or Detroit. He might just feel comfortable here and honestly want to stay.

I still think at the end of the day, he'd probably opt out only because of the fact that he could get a really big contract on the open market this winter but I think it would be very easy to keep him here. All the Mets need to do is tack on 2-3 years with a similar AAV and I think he'd agree to it in a second.
I meant great if he sticks to his word.
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/24/2016 3:44 pm : link
Guys with his performance level don't usually hit the open market. I can see teams lining up now that he's done it for 2 seasons. Whatever reason there was for all of MLB to undervalue him before, I think all bets are off now.
Just
DanMetroMan : 8/24/2016 3:46 pm : link
doesn't make any sense for Cespedes. Even if he absolutely loves it here, why wouldn't you love it here for 5-6 years? It's not as if opting out would cost him anything. What, the Mets are willing to give him 2 years 47.5 (what he's owed) but if he opts out and looks for more they will pull the offer out of spite? Even if he were so obsessed with staying here that he would turn down more from someone else, the guy is going to at least want the security that a 2 year deal does not bring. I'd offer to tear up the next 2 years, give him a new 5 year deal where he could opt out after 3. Win-win in my book.
I mean he's said/done similar stuff in the past
DanMetroMan : 8/24/2016 3:48 pm : link

Five pitchers — Josh Edgin, Sean Gilmartin, Erik Goeddel, Logan Verrett and Gabriel Ynoa — are on the 40-man roster.[...]

Kevin Plawecki didn’t get consistent playing time with the Mets and hit .194. He was sent back to the 51s after Travis d’Arnaud returned from the disabled list in June. Since then, he’s hit .307 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs at Las Vegas entering Tuesday. [...]

Matt Reynolds has shuttled back and forth between Las Vegas and New York, with three call-ups since starting the season at Triple A. Ty Kelly also has been back and forth. [...]

Young outfielders Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo also should find themselves back in New York.

Since being sent down in August, both have been handling Triple-A pitching with apparent ease. Conforto has hit .550 in his past 10 games and .426 overall in 26 games at Triple A, and Nimmo is battling for the Pacific Coast League batting title.

Entering Tuesday, Nimmo was hitting .346, and Backman has said Nimmo has been the most improved player he’s had over the course of a season.
