When I was growing up, our neighbor who worked the docks in Bayonne used to get Goldstar stereos and electronics. He couldn't get anybody to take it.....it was all crap.
I assume they changed it to LG to shake the customer perception.
You don't remember how bad Samsung and some of the other Korea manufacturers used to be?
I went to Korea in 1985 and 1986, and then went back around 2002. The difference from the '80s until now was incredible. Korea in the '80s was like a 3rd world country. Now, they are a technology leader.
but are you willing to buy a Hyundai? They used to be crap too.
Just like the earlier Japaneses products, the Koreans needed time to get better, and they have (FYI, most of the guts of the tv's out there are made by LG).
I honestly wasn't aware of Samsung as a brand until much later
And their rise from upstart brand to industry leader happened so quickly.
And this isn't to say that LG should be looked at differently, I just didn't know they reformed. I feel like 20 years ago if you suggested Goldstar would be a direct competitor to Sony, and in some cases perhaps even thought of as superior, you would've been laughed out of the room. It's just funny to think of.

LG makes some good stuff.
I just bough a Samsung 65" SUHD 4K TV (8000 series) for my living room. Cant wait I get it hooked up. Even a losing game looks great on this bad boy!!!
that I got from Walmart on sale for $550 out the door. This TV is amazing.. streaming Netflix 4k right from the built in app is awesome. Also I'm pretty sure Samsung and LG display panels are made in the same factory in South Korea...
have also come a long way from the 80s and 90s. Hyundai and Kia is a ton of car for your buck these days.
Electronics brands go thru cycles. 15 years ago Sony was the tits and Dell computers were considered better than HP, Gateway etc. Samsung was a 2nd or 3rd rate brand.

is one of the best brands out there for TV's. LG has good TV and displays that are considered budget class without sacrificing too much quality. Hyundai and Kia cars have come a long way as well.
