but they're too light. I want a beer that'll put some hair on your back, some sting in your zing, some crust in your crotch, some dingleberries in your dingle...
I do love Oktoberfests but when it's hot I like a refreshing beer when it's hot out. It's just that simple.

just reading this article about pumpkin beer. I recently moved and one of the local bars has a pretty sweet (rotating) beer selection that rivals most bars I have ever been to. I suspect they will have a nice pumpkin selection Link - ( New Window )
to be pretty undrinkable across the board. Overmarketed and underperforming. I'f i'm paying $10-$12 for a 6-pack, no chance they get my money.

As for the rest of their line -- particularly the winter season stuff -- way too much of the "brewed with spices" crap. I really don't care for those at all.
I used to be a fan of a lot of their stuff. But with the rising prices and deteriorating quality, I've been looking at other options (like Saranac, for example) for the last few years.
I just don't like the "spice" flavoring in many Oktoberfest beers, even though someone on here yelled at me last year or the year before saying there was no spice flavor in Oktoberfest beers.

As cliche'd as it is, its never been more true than in the beer world. Most foods/drinks are pretty comparable, but generally speaking craft brews are just infinitely better than the mainstream stuff. I don't need expensive pizza, soda, ice cream, etc., but I'm going to pay extra for good beer.
I still drink a corona and the like during the summer if I go to the beach or its really hot, but that's pretty much it.

Given a choice, I'll go with craft ale. I'm a beer geek, not a snob, but I just don't get the grapefruit IPA trend. If you want a citrus flavor, make an American IPA and add a lot of cascade hops.

And while I have to admit that I am a fan of Sam Adams Oktoberfest, I'm not a fan of Coors Light, Bud Light, or Corona (which I used to drink like a fish in college). Sadly, my brother and my neighbors only really drink Coors Light...:(

I didn't even realize the difference between the two. Whenever we have a neighborhood firepit night on our culdesac, all of the guys will bring out beers, and Coors Light is the beer of choice although one of my neighborhood from Pottsville, PA always drinks Yingling (which I don't mind). I'll drink their Coors Light and in return I'll provide some craft beer for them, which they seem to enjoy a lot. They're just a bunch of cheap bastards.
does Grapefruit right. I laughed when Magic Hat ripped it off with Electric Peel which tasted like someone poured grapefruit juice on top of an already brewed beer. Its terrible.
But Grapefruit Sculpin is fantastic. I'm pissed they sold out though, so I don't buy them anymore.
I think it is just a pumpkin beer with a shot of Stoli vanilla maybe. It was actually quite delicious.
There are a bunch of good pumpkin beers. Southampton pumpkin ale is actually really good too.
For those that like ciders, woodpecker makes a pumpkin cider that is hard to get. They are good but you have to be in the mood for something sweet. I actually do not like their other ciders as they are overly sweet but the pumpkin cider is delicous though.
Some others have already been mentioned. And pumpkin and beer do go together. Supposedly it is one of the oldest types of beers in america.
the final straw was trying to suck down a Weyerbacher at a 9 am tailgate. That was rough... I'll probably get one sixer over the course of the fall, just to try it, but I'll stick to Octoberfest's or cabernet as my fall drink of choice.

Agree. I've noticed the "spices" are stronger and stronger each year, and the beer taste is gone. Dogfish is the only tolerable one. I noticed Ballast Point had one out, so I'll give that a shot, but I won't go searching for anything beyond that. Nothing beats a great cab on a crisp fall day. I'm really looking forward to that.

I feel the same way about IPAs. Basically I'm tired of them and have downgraded to regular pale ales. Less boozy and less filling.

I think that the Rebel Grapefruit is excellent and I haven't liked any other Grapefruit IPA.

I don't live in CT, but a buddy of mine just got a lease signed to open his own brewery in MA, and he raves about Sip of Sunshine from Stratford, CT.
Them, Treehouse in Munson, MA, and obviously Heady Topper from Burlington, VT (or near there).

Already had Heavy Seas Treasure Fest and it was OK. Really can't beat the Germans.

Sip of Sunshine is still my favorite beer. I've had a ton of IPA's and their brew is just the perfect mix of hops, citrus, and ABV.
But Grapefruit Sculpin is fantastic. I'm pissed they sold out though, so I don't buy them anymore.

I like the Shipyard beer - it wasn't the looks, the sugar on the rim gets gritty and sandy. I don't like salt on the rim of a margarita though either.
Otherwise I don't even mix anything my booze. Scotch neat, bourbon neat, vodka on the rocks, tequila straight, and no fruit in my beer.

Try Jack.O Traveler pumpkin shandy if you like Roadsmary. I think it's better and loved the baby.
Without the spices you would have a pretty bland wheat beer.
If you want a more distinct "pumpkin" flavor, you should use one of the more
flavorful squashes.
Most Octoberfest beers are ales, not lagers like the traditional German version.
One of the best I've tried in the last few years was a lager made by Narragansett and sold 16 oz cans. Very authentic and true to the style.
Most of the American versions are too heavy and dark with a higher ABV
